Spennymoor boss Graeme Lee aggrieved by three penalty decisions in defeat to Darlington

Spennymoor boss Graeme Lee was left aggrieved by three penalty decisions in his side’s defeat to Darlington on Saturday afternoon.

Graeme Lee was disappointed that some key decisions didn’t go his side’s way during their 1-0 defeat to Darlington at Blackwell Meadows on Saturday.

The Moors boss felt that a foul on Rob Ramshaw in the first half and another on Isaac Fletcher at the death were worthy of spot kicks but both were turned down by the officials.

Lee was also critical of the way his side conceded again as they were beaten for a third successive away game during the first month of the new campaign.

Interviewer: A frustrating this afternoon here at Blackwell Meadows, what’s your overall assessment right now?

Graeme: I feel as if we should have had two clear-cut penalties and he’s given them one which wasn’t in the box. The decision making from the referee was embarrassing. For the first one, their keeper cleared Rob Ramshaw out, but the ref played on. His explanation at half-time made no sense whatsoever. The second one, the foul was outside the box. It was nowhere near a penalty. For the third one, Isaac Fletcher drove into the box. He took two players on, rode one tackle and the next one catches him on the back of his ankle and he goes down. The ref books him, but it was a clear-cut penalty. I don’t like talking about it but it’s then moments in games change the games and as much as we were probably at our best in performance wise I still feel so we were the the team on the front foot all the time and on the and dominating the game in areas we just couldn’t break them down which was a disappointing thing but decision making from the referees just is it’s embarrassing.

Interviewer: Yeah at the start of the game we we looked like we’ got really on top we were building momentum and then the goal just stifled that didn’t it

Graeme: Yeah we’ve got a corner they haven’t had a attack and we take a corner we pick up the second ball and we miss kick it or we lose it and we left Reece one v one, we recover we get a corner and then simple corner from one of their lads running from deep and he has a free header and 1-0 down and that gives Darlo lifeline and credit to them they dug in and fought for everything but we then came back into game but I still feel I still feel so we weren’t clinical enough in the final third we tried to force things we didn’t move the ball clean enough but we still gotten some great opportunities, you come out second half and you got worse

Darlington manager Steve Watson meanwhile said: “It was a fantastic result in a local derby. We got another clean sheet and we defended our box brilliantly. But another side of me is frustrated with the way we played, especially with ball retention.

“I thought the top end was okay and we made decent decisions around their box, but when we won the ball back in transition, we invited pressure with the number
of passes we gave away.

“Jack is a great header of the ball, he’s an old fashioned striker who enjoys attacking the ball. Our assistant manager, Terry Mitchell, has been working on that corner in particular, and Matty Cornish got it on the button.

“It was a really tough game, there wasn’t a lot of football played, but it was such an important win.”

Here’s how social media users reacted with Spennymoor boss Graeme Lee aggrieved by three penalty decisions in the National League North defeat to Darlington…

@MKsTweeting: Not having the Ranshaw one at all, went down like he’s been hit by a truck, minimal contact and he’d gone in with high boot anyway. The Fletcher one though… 😬

@lmc_________: the fletcher one looked a stonewaller from where I was stood like 😂

@Jordan_Toddy: that’ll be a fine coming the clubs way 1 minute into the interview

@aidanreese97: On a day when Oasis dominate the headlines. Graeme Lee, stop crying your heart out 💔

@madwrighty_96gaming45: Not one penalty shout today was a penalty as a darlo fan I even said no pen ! Out of all 3 pen shouts no penalties to any, all to easy to go down… run of play from a corner gets a goal and then darlo defended again and again, hope you realise… we had this run of form last year spenny football is football shit happens and we all know the level of refs is appalling in this league

@daniellongnose: once again darlo fans obsessed

@liamcooke1859: Sour grapes…. Neither penalty calls were penalty’s even the one we got…. enjoy the defeat though the support from you guys was piss poor considering your only 15miles away

@daniellongnose: @liamcooke1859 obsessed by a pub team from up road, who every season finishes above you, do your maths on populations between darlo and spenny, then compare average attendances per home game your an embarrassment forgot to ask hows your new ground coming along?? must be terrible been homeless and having to borrow the local rugby clubs ground

@liamcooke1859: @daniellongnose obsessed? Why would I be obsessed with Spennymoor? Its only spennymoor. And yeah spenny have finished above us in recent times so what? Many teams have. We are focusing on improving rather than what a wannabe rival thinks. But keep thinking about past seasons if helps you cry a little less
