Hartlepool and Colchester also confirm managerial departures

Hartlepool United sack their manager Paul Hartley with Colchester United also expected to wave goodbye to their boss Wayne Brown.

Hartley departs the Pools who sit in the relegation zone, having picked up four points from nine games played, just three months into his time in charge.

They fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home at the hands of Sutton United, with the hosts going up to 10th in the League Two standings.

HARTLEPOOL STATEMENT

“Hartlepool United can confirm that they have today parted company with Manager Paul Hartley and Assistant Manager Gordon Young.

“A decision was taken to make a change with the club currently sitting 2nd from bottom in League Two and without a win so far this season.

“A further update on succession plans will follow in due course.”

On the 24th of May 2022, Hartley reportedly snubbed an approached from Pools approach to stay at Cove Rangers after promotion success.

However there was a U-turn in that decision after more talks, and parted ways after going up with the Scottish League 1 side to the Championship.

The 45 year old won promotion five times as a manager and joined from Cove Rangers in Scotland following two promotions and leading the club to their highest ever league position in the Scottish second tier.

Meanwhile, League Two outfit Colchester United have sacked head coach Wayne Brown following a 1-0 defeat to Grimsby Town on Saturday afternoon, Alan Nixon reported on his Patreon account.

The U’s were defeated by the Mariners at home on Saturday thanks to a Harry Clifton goal, a result which left the Essex based club in 21st position in the fourth tier.

Colchester have won just once in the league this season in nine matches, with five defeats to their name.

Brown is set to for the axe after a poor run of form, with their only victory this season coming against Bradford City on the 16th of August.

Brown, who played 142 times for Colchester during his playing days, had been the club’s caretaker boss in 2015 and also in 2021, whilst still the boss of non league side Maldon and Tiptree.

He then took over from Hayden Mullins on a temporary basis in January of 2022 before being handed the role on a full-time basis in May, but his time in charge at the Colchester Community Stadium appears to be coming to an end.

COLCHESTER STATEMENT

Following Colchester United’s home loss against Grimsby Town, the decision was taken to relieve Wayne Brown of his role as First Team Head Coach.

Chairman Robbie Cowling has made the following statement: I and everyone associated with the club will always be extremely grateful to Wayne Brown for the job he did last season when he lifted the club from being in the midst of a relegation battle to finishing a very respectable 15th place.

However, we have decided to act swiftly and decisively following the team’s poor start to this season.

I accept that many of you will feel I have made a harsh decision, given Wayne’s success last season and given that he has been such an exceptional servant to Colchester United over the years as a player, coach and manager.

On a personal level, I feel that too but as the club’s Chairman I have a duty to make what I believe are the right decisions for the long-term future of Colchester United.

We thank Wayne for the hard work and attention to detail he has shown in not only his role as Head Coach, but in all his roles here at the club.

Robbie Cowling

The club won’t be making any further comment now until later this week.

There is plenty of reaction as Hartlepool sack their manager with Colchester also expected to…

@hufc_paul: Praise the lord

@newpowerhh: Amen. Now get the right one in.

@parkerchris1989: Well done Raj!! It had to be done.

@AndrewHanlon15: About time

@BAdams3006: Not remotely surprising

@JamieHUFC: Good, glad he’s gone

@Dan_Nich27: Never nice to see someone else their jobs, but a decision had to be made. Graham Alexander or a Darren Ferguson would be a real statement by the chairman.

@jackgardner__: hate seeing managers being sacked but had to be done tbf , only was is up from now surely

@lc1474: Thank fuck for that

@Logan14Cameron: Thats a shame he was doing a good job

@Pools1908: Had to happen. Well done pools for getting it done quick

@ianh____: Had to be done ✅

@gregdunning20: Need to get someone in asap and get us out of this mess

@Ryannx97: Best decision for the club moving forward!

@DanielHustler6: It’s never nice hearing people lose jobs etc but this has to be done. They’ve both lost the dressing room and the fans. Stick Sweens in charge! There’s definitely talent there but only showed it when they wanted too. Just have to wait another 6 months for a new manager now…

@Fin_Seath72: Oh ffs, here we go

@ForDarlo: Shame! He was doing a right good job like

@GhostzIsaac: Thought he was a bit unlucky for me, if we held on for just five more minutes in the Colchester and Crewe games I think the bad form would have turned around.

@JWheelhouse_01: Good. Now we can actually try and get somewhere 👊

@cufcdanny: Gutted! Wish they’d waiting a few more week til Carlisle played them! No doubt will have a new manager by time we’re there there in 3 weeks! Personally thought he was doing ok! 😂. Seriously who’d of thought signing majority of lower Scottish league players would work? #HUFC

@durhamchris1983: Right decision but others like Hobin need chasing as well. Hung the manager out to dry & cowardly went into hiding at the first sniff of criticism. Poundland mentality has resulted in this mess after a summer of failed bluster

@SamArnell05: Next appointment is absolutely critical. But with Rajs track record, makes you wonder

@NickLoughIin: No choice at all after yesterday – that was a tipping point for everyone concerned. Players weren’t happy with his methods and had lost faith in their boss.

@_WrightL11: Right decision. Garbage people, garbage mentality, garbage football

@HUFC_NWC: Pleased them two clowns have gone the journey – we can now rebuild and get behind the lads 💪🏽

@clarebuchanan: Hate seeing a manager sacked so early in season but I think it was the correct decision. Careful decision about the new @Official_HUFC manager needed but please not Alexander.

@DanHedley92: Thank fuck for that
