John Terry ‘splashes millions’ alongside consortium ‘about to take over’ EFL club

John Terry ‘splashes millions’ alongside a consortium who are ‘about to take over’ EFL club Colchester United, according to reports.

The 45 year old former footballer is set to announce a £14million deal for the League Two outfit, with the move marking a new chapter after stepping away from his dreams of coaching.

His 22-year-old nephew Frankie Terry is already on the books at Colchester, but has spent the 2025/26 season on loan at National League side Braintree Town. Family ties potentially playing a part it it all too.

John’s surprise move into club ownership comes after a former team-mate of his in Alexandre Pato is said to have expressed an interest in acquiring the club, only to have then pulled out of negotiations back in February.

An insider told The Sun: “JT is really excited for it to become official.

“This has been a long time in the making, and JT is really excited for it all to become official.

“He’s a hugely passionate advocate of lower league football, and helping clubs get the support and publicity they deserve.

“He’s already been down to the training ground a few times and got stuck in without any fanfare.

“He really believes in the boys and, for their part, the lads at Colchester are absolutely buzzing that he’s getting involved.

“He will bring a real stardust. Everyone involved with Colchester is excited, and the hope is this deal will really put them on the map as they push for promotion.”

On Sunday night when news of this first emerged, John Terry declined to comment.

Here’s the social media reaction as John Terry ‘splashes millions’ alongside a consortium who are ‘about to take over’ the EFL club…

@co5712: An interesting development. The only worry I have is that he has complained about lack of opportunities to manage, surely the takeover could not result in him placing himself in the dugout.

@StuartGarrard: I don’t want him anywhere near the club TBH.

@Tyler7Smith: Very exciting. But my only concern as with any ownership is the management, he has to stick with the Cowleys. Will bring a wealth of contacts, proper staff and likely a real proper structure from top to bottom. 🤞 it gets done!

@DGMGH001: It’s great to see all these names looking at buying us and whoever finally gets the deal will make a big difference. If JT is the one I hope he sticks to owning the club and not interfering with managing the club. Own the club, bring some names in, give us funds to get us out L2!

@RyanMann15: I said on Friday the players and management looked very happy and all together they must have had the news a few days beforehand, this is massive keep the spine of this team together along with a few new additions and we will be cooking next season, will put bums on seats #colu

@Nick169239: I think most fans would be prepared to put the questions around his character to one side IF he gave the Cowleys his total backing and didn’t interfere with their decision making

@ThxmasRxss: Over the moon. I’ve supported this football club for 23 years, we’ve always been the downtrodden, the looked down upon, ugly stepchild. Little Colchester. Always said If I ever saw this club having the opportunity to become more, I would welcome it. Up the fucking U’s Jon 🔵⚪️

@EagleEyedColU: On a serious note, this is interesting. The Sun report seems confident it’s going to happen. An insider states he will have “significant influence” at the club. Does he take up a sporting director/director of football role? Don’t you dare touch the Cowleys! #ColU

@OfficialUpTheUs: If true, how much of a pull would he bring, you would guess maybe some youngest from Chelsea on loan maybe

@EagleEyedColU: Could be important. Obvious links to Chelsea who have an excellent academy as well as numerous ex players in the game as coaches. The comparison to Reynolds/Wrexham and Snoop/Swansa a bit of an exaggeration by The Sun (shock) but in the footballing world it will get eyes on us

@OfficialUpTheUs: Yeah my only concern is all this has come from the sun, not saying it’s not true but they like a story!

@EagleEyedColU: Could easily be jumping the gun – the deals involving Pato and Foley we were led to believe were close. So don’t think its a done deal, but its not a fake story

@this4harrison: I don’t trust the sun at all but that article was rather detailed, surely they’re not allowed to just write fake stories? #ColU

@Betson365: This hasn’t come out of no where, someone has briefed them – we’ve had two brief and collapse so no guarantee but this one feels different, article talks in a more certain tone than prospective #colu

@J_Aldridge95:
Terry (+consortium) will surely like the Cowleys.
– proven EFL experience
– back to back promotion winners
– Essex locals
– two years of stability and improvement
– contracts until 2028
– strong support within club
– engaged fan base
What’s not to like? #colu

@Kemble24: ‘Front page of The Sun, you’ll never sing that’ #colu

@tom_mccormack: I think (if it’s true) JT will come in as Director of Football to dabble in transfers/loans while Danny and Nicky remain in their posts. That way, everyone gets to take a bit of credit for any success #colu have.
