West Brom face threat of points deduction after allegedly breaching EFL rules in 2024/25 season

West Brom face the threat of being given a points deduction after allegedly breaching EFL rules in the 2024/25 season.

According to Telegraph Sport, the club have been charged with the alleged breach of English Football League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

John Percy reports that as per EFL guidelines, ‘any sporting sanction from the previous season must be applied in the following campaign, which would represent a severe blow to Albion’s hopes of survival with four games left.’

He adds that West Brom, who currently sit 20th in the Championship, two points above the drop zone, are looking to delay any punishment until the 2026/27 season.

WEST BROM STATEMENT:

West Bromwich Albion acknowledges media reports relating to the club’s compliance with the EFL’s Profitability & Sustainability (P&S) rules.

The club considers that it has fully complied with the P&S rules. The club will continue to co-operate with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit and looks forward to resolving this matter.

Albion understands the concerns of supporters and thanks fans for their unwavering support of the team, whose success on the pitch during the final four games of the season remains our absolute priority.

It would not be appropriate for the club to comment further at this stage.

Leicester are one of the teams also in danger of going down to the third tier, not helped by a six point deduction given to them back in February for breaching financial rules, and last week failed with an appeal to reduce the sanction.

John Percy adds that ‘exact amount of West Brom’s breach is not thought to be significant and only a minor number above loss limits, but a points deduction, transfer ban or fine are all potential punishments.’

Journalist and West Brom commentator @SteveHermon tweeted: “When #WBA submitted their annual accounts last month my understanding was that they’d strengthened their aim of complying with P&S rules & there were no concerns of a breach, so the report today by @JPercyTelegraph is a worry. I’m waiting for a response from the club & EFL.”

Here’s how fans reacted amid news that West Brom face the threat of points deduction after allegedly breaching EFL rules in the 2024/25 season…

@JBaldock94: Obviously don’t want us to have it this season but if it does come into play this season then surely they have to apply it soon. Clubs with a few games left need to know what they are up against. A lot of clubs will need clarity. Hope for our sake it is next season.

@jimmythewhack: I thought the club worked with the league when the take over took over. Watching our spending and of course we’ve sold players to keep below the p and s rules??? #wba

@B_H_Baggie: That was the impression I was under, placed under special measures and working with the league. Sold our best players arguably for under market value and we have still managed to screw something up.

@jimmythewhack: Think the club need to make a statement pretty quick regarding these allegations. How has it even got to this when the league were working with us?? #wba

@JACKO_BRAND: Albion have been working closely with the EFL since Bilkul arrived, which means someone has made a huge fuck up somewhere down the line. Can’t see any sanction being applied this season, but we were hoping for a clean slate in the summer. #wba

@SJBR94: For any club willing to work closely with the EFL, take note and don’t turn your back even for a moment. #WBA

@LiamWBA98: LEAGUE 1 BAGGIES SIUUUUU

@P4ulG87: I thought the club were working with the league and they had to sanction every deal. Sold players to help the books and still looking at points deduction 🤨 #WBA

@BenjaminWba: Isn’t the rule it has to be implemented this season? #wba

@2025_wells: Well that’s thrown the cat among the pigeons in terms of the relegation race.

@B_H_Baggie: Thought we were working with the EFL under special measures to avoid an issue like this. Someone has dropped a bollock somewhere, Albion that!

@Lukey_Stan13: Someone has dropped the ball, I guess the EFL can only go by the information that is shared by the club, someone has made a mess somewhere to allow this to happen. However minor it may be, questions need asking about current processes, both club and EFL. #WBA

@BuzagloToBalis: FWIW, re #wba points’ deduction. Would be surprised if anything happens this season (lawyers will see to that). You would also hope #WBA’s transparency with the EFL throughout will help their cause. All of this brings into focus something I’ve said on the @TheLiquidatorP1 of late: Patel/Bilkul may need to start to think about external investment in the coming period. They are learning about the harsh realities of football ownership… and through no fault of their own #wba

@leboufdebrief: I’m struggling to comprehend this given we have been working in conjunction with the EFL to avoid this very scenario. All them sacrifices only still to end up here , i will be very interested to when the club release a statement there reaction to this news. Plus now uncertainty as it’s a potential game changer to what we may need points wise to stay up . Not knowing if and when any sanction may come . #wba
