Grimsby boss Paul Hurst explains reasons for mocking Colchester fans at full time

Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst explains his reasons for mocking Colchester United fans at full time after his side won 1-0 on Saturday.

The Mariners boss simply placed a finger to his lips and looked up to the West Stand following the visitors triumph at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Grimsby earned a fourth successive away league win, after Harry Clifton’s strike secured them victory at the U’s.

Hurst said: “There was some guy who I think was on a one-man mission to basically shout abuse throughout the game which is fine, I can handle that.

“I just told him to be quiet at the end!”

Clifton chipped the ball neatly over on-rushing Colchester keeper Kieran O’Hara to score, after Ryan Taylor created the chance with a pass.

The former Ipswich boss said: “We still didn’t get to the levels that I’d really like but at the same time, it’s another away win.

“I felt it was a deserved win – I can’t be too critical of the players and there’s something about them.

“It’s another clean sheet and another win on the road, so I’m delighted with the result.

“With the performance, we could be better certainly but a moment of quality in terms of the ball from Tayles (Ryan Taylor) and then a very composed finish from Harry.

“It was obviously from the sidelines what he should do; I wasn’t sure if he’d seen it but fair play, he had and he executed it really well.

“I’ve just had a message from someone saying ‘who’d have thought Harry Clifton would be a goal machine?’

“I’m happy for that sentence to be part of what we’re talking about.

“We were a little bit disappointed in the first half – it looked like we lacked a little bit of urgency, energy, enthusiasm.

“That was kind of the message at half-time, as in can we lift it?

“We felt that the game was there to be won.

“I read Wayne’s (Brown’s) comments prior to the game on the fact that he felt they’d come on strong in the second half of games, maybe not started them great.

“They got the goal in midweek (at Walsall) very early but I kind of back us against most teams in terms of staying in the game and coming on quite strong.

“We had spells don’t get me wrong and they’ve had spells but I’m not sure how many real saves Max (Crocombe) has made in the end?

“They had some crosses where probably on their side they might have felt they wanted more quality into our box but that goes for us likewise.”

Hurst claims his side should have had a second-half penalty after Ryan Clampin appeared to shove Clifton in the area.

“It looked like it was a penalty from where I was, I must admit,” he added.

“I haven’t seen it back but he did seem to go at some pace away from where he was.

“My gut was that it should have been a penalty but I kind of got the feeling that it was never going to be given.”

Since the game, Colchester’s technical director and former boss Steve Ball will lead an interim management team following the sacking of head coach Wayne Brown.

Ball is to be assisted by head of recruitment Ross Embleton and under-18s coach Elliot Ward until the League Two side appoint a new head coach.

Brown was sacked on Sunday after a run of five defeats in their opening nine games of the campaign.

Ball left as U’s boss in February 2021 after 13 games without a win.

He re-joined the club as technical director earlier this summer but has told the club he is not interested in taking permanent charge for a second time.

“Steve has ruled himself out of the process of taking the role past this period and will return to his role as technical director when a new first team head coach is appointed,” U’s sporting director Dmitri Halajko said.

Halajko adds that the recruitment process to replace Brown “has already started” for a head coach who can “take the club forward”.

“It’s a very important appointment so we must be thorough. However, we will also be working extremely hard to make the right choice as smoothly and as quickly as possible,” he added.

“We felt that the right thing to do was to put a completely different management team in charge for those games that are to be played whilst we conduct our search.”

Halajko also said the fact that Brown’s assistant Joe Dunne, under-23s coach David Hussey and goalkeeping coach Darren Smith wasn’t included in the new interim team “should not be seen as an indication that those staff members have departed the club and will not be involved again in the future”.

Ball’s first game back in charge will be at home to Rochdale on Saturday.

Top six favourites to become new Colchester boss

Luke Garrard – 2/1
David Artell – 5/1
Dave Huzzey – 8/1
Joe Dunne – 8/1
Paul Tisdale – 10/1
John McGreal – 10/1
