Potential goal ruled out after EFL referee missed it falling over before subbing himself off

A potential goal for Charlton ended up being ruled out after EFL referee Robert Lewis missed it when falling over before subbing himself off.

The League One clash between the Addicks and Lincoln City ended in a 0-0 draw with little goalmouth action to talk about.

However, it could have been different with much of the talking point about the match official – who missed an integral part of the game in the opening 30 minutes.

Having clearing the ball, Charlton went on the break with Miles Leaburn’s sending his shot under keeper Carl Rushworth. There was an indication that the ball had crossed the line, but the ref was nowhere to be seen, instead taking a tumble at the time and missed it altogether, so couldn’t award the goal bizarrely.

He was way out behind the play, fell over following a collision with Steven Sessegnon and even the linesman couldn’t make a decision. The two officials had a lengthy conversation before deciding they couldn’t give a goal.

Just five minutes later and the Addicks on the attack, the referee blew his whistle once again leaving many baffled. It became clear that the fall took Lewis out so much that he couldn’t carry in with the game, some he came off and another official replaced him.

The game finishing 0-0, leaving Charlton rather frustrated, thinking they should have had their goal count.

Lincoln sit 16th in League One while Charlton are 18th and there are concerns they might end up in a relegation battle following a tough start to the season.

Addicks boss Garner was less than pleased with the officiating after his side went eight games without a win.

He said: “We had opportunities, we had the 3v1 break in the first half, we had penalty decisions that we don’t get, I don’t know if it went over the line or not, but we’ve had no rub of the green, no luck, but we need to work, improve and push to get three points on Tuesday night.”

Speaking to CharltonTV Garner said: “We never looked like losing the game. We wanted the three points, so we are disappointed with one. We had a clean sheet, which was the first in a while. Defensively a very, very good performance and between the first two thirds of the pitch we were in control. They are really dangerous on the counter-attack and I thought we dealt with that really well. We were really in control with our build-up. They have gone back five here today to try and stop us, they changed shape and tried to nullify us, so we’ve had to play like the home team.”

Garner said on the goal decision: “I don’t know whether it went over the line or not; my issue is the linesman is not up with play, so he can’t make the decision. If he is level and looking across, he gives himself a chance of making a decision but he’s behind play so he can’t make a decision.”

Charlton also had three penalty appeals turned down during the game.

“We had a penalty shout for a handball first half,” explained Garner, “It looked a penalty to me on Miles Leaburn in the second half, when he was dragged down and rugby tackled but we can’t change that. We’ve got to try and do it ourselves rather than rely on those decisions. Can we be a bit better? Can we be a bit sharper? Can we win the game without having to rely on those decisions?”

His side are back in action against Exeter at The Valley on Tuesday having drawn six of the last eight league games.

Garner said: “We just need confidence, that is the key, so when we get into the final third we can be a bit more positive and natural with it rather than being a bit apprehensive and worried about the consequences. We need a couple of goals to fly in and that will change things around.”

Mark Kennedy felt his Lincoln defence were always on top after City extended their unbeaten home start in the league to five games.

“I thought we looked like the side who were going to win the game. I do think we have to look at the positives, but we want to win as many home games as we can.”

Yet he admitted that his side lacked a cutting edge, adding: “I thought we needed to be at our best at the back, and we needed to be at our best up top to win the game, and I don’t think we were in the final third.”

Kennedy is hopeful that his summer acquisition will prove to be a fruitful one. “He (Mandroiu) is a real talent and I want to put that pressure on him to show the fans why we signed him,” Kennedy aded.

On adopting a back five for recent matches, he said: “I think we have to be adaptable. When I look at us this year, we score a lot of goals but we concede a lot of goals.”

Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher recently spoke about League One needing goal-line technology, see more on that HERE.
