Glass bottles among objects hurled by Scotland fans leaving England supporters badly injured

Glass bottles were among a number of objects which were hurled by Scotland fans leaving some England supporters badly injured.

It turned sour at Hampden Park as the two sets of fans reportedly clashed inside Hampden Park on Tuesday night, with some needing to be treated by medics.

Gareth Southgate’s side picked up a 3-1 victory over their long-standing rivals with goals coming from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and even an own goal from Harry Maguire in front of a crowd of over 51,000.

According to Mike Keegan, bottles were thrown into the England away end throughout the match from Scotland supporters who had been sitting in the stands above.

He wrote: “Some unpleasant news from Hampden. Witnesses say bottles were thrown into the England end (2,901 allocated) from those in the Scotland section above. One fan was struck on the head and needed medical treatment.”

And as the game was coming to an end, some eyewitness accounts from England fans claimed they were on the receiving end of a violent attack.

Another backed up the claim, tweeting: “Launching bottles from the concourse to the England fans below. He’s a bloke in his 50s, gashed his head open, f***ing disgusting!”

@RobDorsettSky meanwhile has said: “Sky Sports News had been told one #england fan needed medical treatment after being hit in the head by a bottle inside Hampden Park tonight. The bottle was thrown into the away end, leaving the fan with a cut head. Not clear if anyone has been arrested.”

The day after the game saw a statement issued by police.

Five people were arrested at the Scotland v England game at Hampden on Tuesday night.

Police say that the arrests of four men, aged 22, 23, 26 and 51, and a 30 year-old woman, were all related to breaches of the peace.

This is Public Order Act 1936, Section 5

“Any person who in any public place or at any public meeting uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or whereby a breach of the peace is likely to be occasioned, shall be guilty of an offence.”

Meanwhile, Ally McCoist has hit out at the Tartan Army’s booing of God Save the King.

He told talkSPORT: “I do not like the booing of any national anthem to be honest with you. I just think it is a distinct lack of respect. I genuinely dislike it intensely.

“If you can’t show respect, I am not talking about England, I am talking about anybody or anybody that goes to Hampden, any football ground or any sporting event. If you can’t show the opposition respect by respecting their national anthem, I think it is a poor show.

“I get the rivalry with England and Scotland, and I get some of the Scots, perhaps SNP fans giving it the whole bit, but I am talking about in general. There should be respect shown for an opposing national anthem and I think it is totally out of order.”

Jude Bellingham said the booing “boosted” the England players.

He said via beIN SPORTS: “Yeah I think that’s always the balance you’ve got to find when it’s fans and players. I think when you do that to the right team you can really get under their skin, and today we were so poised, calm and composed that I actually think it boosted us going into the game.

“I think we are all really proud to represent our country so it was important we showed that tonight.

“That’s the kind of international games that I enjoy, and the team enjoys, the ones that have a bit more grit to them. It’s more than a friendly to ourselves and the fans with the bragging rights involved.”

Twitter users reacted after hearing that glass bottles were among the objects hurled by Scotland fans leaving England supporters badly injured…

@Brotonswfc: Scotlands only shot on target

@j_nffcc: But the Scottish say we’re the ones that cause trouble at football 🤔🤔

@EdShobnall: It wasn’t just from the section above, the section behind the goal next to the England fans were doing it all match and it included a hip flask, which narrowly missed someone’s head.

@Leap_year_man: The only way Scotland were gonna hit the target tonight

@ImJustLooking58: Nothing changes there then.. I went to watch England vs Scotland at Wembley in 1973 as a 15 year old. We were dodging empty whisky bottles all through the match!!

@Deets24: Bravehearts 🤦‍♂️

@Rollsie7: No doubt this will somehow be the England fans fault

@ForeverAYellow: hope the individual is alright, sounds nasty like

@PAWil62279712: Why house England fans in a section below the Scotland fans? Madness.

@palacebald: Scotland England is the funniest fixture ever cause Scottish fans and players putting their lives on the line for it and causing argy bargy scraps to show ‘pashun’ and England just turn up half arsed batter them in first gear and then go home

@baggie_ade: England win at Hampden marred by awful behaviour by home fans. Several glass bottles were launched into the away end (mostly Buckfast) during game. One fan got hit & was bleeding a lot & many in home section were laughing at him as he fell to the ground.

@dsmith_8: Saw the commotion at HT to our right and think I saw you, very rightly, angry with the stewards and police? Was this the reason why?

@baggie_ade: Yes. Was just on the right of the away section. It was crazy that the Police just seemed to stand there while people were laughing at what had happened.
