Richarlison to get psychological help struggling with mental health and crying on the bench

Richarlison say he is to get psychological help after struggling with his mental health and crying on the bench while on duty for Brazil.

He has opened up about his recent struggles on and off the field, and despite wearing the Brazilian national team jersey with pride, he was seen in tears having been subbed off in his side’s 5-1 win against Bolivia.

Along with a lack of goals and the weight of personal challenges that have affected his performances, he now feels it’s time to get some help, which will begin when he returns to Tottenham.

He started the Selecaoā€™s last two games but couldn’t to find the back of the net, despite having excellent chance to score against Bolivia but over hit his effort, with the ball going high over the bar.

The 26-year-old has struggled in front of goal for club and country, with getting on the scoresheet just once in the Premier League for Tottenham last season (3 goals in all competitions).

He is yet to open his account in the league this term (but did score for Spurs against Fulham in the League Cup) despite now being the focal point in Spursā€™ attack after the exit of Harry Kane, now at Bayern Munich.

Brazil picked up a 1-0 victory over Peru, which saw Richarlison having a headed effort ruled out for offside.

He admitted post-match that he was ready to seek professional help.

Richarlison said (as per Ge Globo): “On the field I’m a happy team player, I try to help as much as possible. Sometimes, things don’t go the way we want. I think this part is a bit of the off-field side that ended up getting in my way. Even though you want to do things right, it ends up going wrong. I will continue to focus on the club, the storm has passed.

“I went through a turbulent time in the last five months off the field. Now things are right at home. People who only had an eye on my money walked away from me. Now things will start to flow, I’m sure I’ll get a good run at Tottenham and make things happen again.

“That sad moment wasn’t even because I played poorly, in my opinion I didn’t play badly in BelĆ©m, it was more of an outburst about the things that were happening off the field, which were out of control not on my part, but on the part of people who were close to me.

“I’m going to go back to England and will seek psychological help, from a psychologist, to work on my mind. That’s it, come back stronger. It’s about getting a good streak at Tottenham, this week I’m going to sit down and talk to them, I need a good streak, get the rhythm of the game and get here well.”

On his disallowed goal on Tuesday night, he added: “I scored the goal, unfortunately it wasn’t worth it. What matters is that the team emerges victorious. I’m happy to wear the national team shirt again, to be playing, happy.

“It’s important to give Tottenham a good run, this bad phase will pass. Wow, what a joke, but it’s part of football, it’s about continuing to work hard, things will happen again for me. I know my potential, I know what I’m capable of, it’s to keep working hard.”

Ange Postecoglou has given his backing to Richarlison, just five months after Antonio Conte called the player “selfish”.

“I thought he worked hard today but I felt we didnā€™t use him enough,” Postecoglou said in August. “I thought we could have been a little bit more direct to him and look for him a little bit more.

“He was making some good runs and he was working hard. He had a couple of half opportunities but I thought we could have created more for him. The key for us with Richy is to keep supporting him because heā€™s working awfully hard for the team in a defensive sense and when we get in that front third I thought we didnā€™t look enough for him today.

“I have got a lot of time for him. Heā€™s a striker and heā€™s got a lot of great attributes and he will always work hard for the team and thatā€™s a good starting point for me.”

Postecoglou’s comments come after Conte clashed with Richarlison, telling reporters in March: “This season, excuse the word, it’s been s*** because I don’t have minutes, I suffered a little with the injury.

“But, when I enter the field, I give my life. I came from two games well, I think that’s it, I think I should have played and I don’t have to cry about it.”

Conte replied: “First of all, I watched the interview of Richarlison. He didn’t criticise me. He said his season was s***, and he’s right. His season has been not good.

“He had injuries, played and scored in the Champions League and then went to the World Cup and then had a serious injury. He’s scored no goals for us. I think he was really honest to say his season was not good. His season has not finished yet.

“If he deserves to play, I’ll give him the opportunity… For the rest of the interview, I think he made a mistake. When you speak of ‘I’ and not ‘us’, you are being selfish. I say to my players, ‘if we want to build something important and win a trophy, we have to speak with ‘we’ not with ‘I”, because otherwise you’re thinking of yourself.

“He made a mistake and he apologised and it was good for me to clarify with the team again about this. In this aspect, we have to improve. We have to be more of a team and show more spirit positive, especially in negative moments.”
