Gateshead players and manager Lee Cattermole get booed off at half time after going 6-0 down to Southend United.

The Shrimpers ran riot, with first half goals from Harry Cardwell (6′), Kyle McAdam (8′), Harry Cardwell (40′) and a hat-trick from Sam Austin (19′, 42′, 45+2′).

The result sees Southend up to 2nd in the National League with 20 points from 9 games played, while Gateshead sit bottom with 4 points.

Lee Cattermole said: “Obviously, an unacceptable result. But very, very difficult circumstances for the players, for obvious reasons. So, yeah, atmosphere on the ground was difficult.

“So, once we went a goal down, it became really difficult against a really strong Southend team who were unbelievably clinical. They had seven shots in the first half, six goals. I’ve seen us under pressure against teams and be stood there thinking, how can we affect this? How can we help the players? But they were so clinical, goals went in really quickly.

“So disappointing, but I asked the players at half time to look after each other and stick in the game and they’ve done that. Could have had a few goals in the second half, but ultimately a really, really difficult afternoon for the club.”

Interviewer: “You mentioned that being a difficult afternoon. What do you feel like made it difficult? Obviously you talk about the first half in terms of Southend being quite clinical. What do you feel like sort of went wrong for you today, I suppose, for lack of a different word?”

Lee: “It was just a really difficult game. The players, we could go through the goals, but not about that.

“For me, I’m managing the football club and the book stops with me. I’m trying to make decisions to improve the club and I believe they will improve the club.

“It’s a professional club, we need to behave like professionals.”

Interviewer: “As for us, where do you go in terms of next week and moving forward off the back of today now?”

Lee: “Give the players two days off. I think that’s important for them. They’ve had four games in 10 days. So give them a little bit of time off.

“Go see the families and come back in and we’re already down to have a reflection in the first nine game block. So we’ll do that as planned.

“Then, my job is about convincing people to come with me every time. And I understand how difficult the job is in this league. It’s getting stronger and stronger. So my job now is to come up with another wave, get in the place to come with me next week and then go down to Wealdstone and get a result.”
