Bury and Workington condemn racist abuse and incident with fans fighting

Bury and Workington condemn racist abuse and an incident with fans fighting which took place outside of Gigg Lane.

The FA Cup Second Qualifying Round fixture played out to a 5-1 victory for the Shakers, but sadly it was marred by troubling scenes, with the clubs investigating what happened.

Momodou Touray said he received racist gestures from those in the away end, and footage has also emerged of fans clashing.

BURY FC STATEMENT:

Bury FC condemns in the strongest possible terms the racist abuse directed towards one of our players at this afternoon’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Workington.

There is no place for racism in football.

The player has the full support of everyone at Bury FC, and the club will continue to support him following this incident.

We stand together against racism.

WORKINGTON AFC STATEMENT:

The Directors, Players and Officials of Workington AFC stand with our friends at Bury FC in condemning the racist abuse aimed at a Bury player at this afternoon’s FA Cup tie.

We all know racism has no place in football and we are already investigating this incident alongside other totally unacceptable behaviour which took place this afternoon at Gigg Lane.

We as a club will take the firmest line possible with anyone found to be involved in those incidents.

Momodou Touray wrote via Twitter: “Thank you so much @buryfcofficial for the incredible support today 🤍.

“Despite some atrocious gestures from the away fans, you continued to get behind us from start to finish. It really doesn’t go unnoticed 🙏🏾”

One witness told Bury Times: “It got really tense where the Workington fans were sat.

“As the match ended loads of their fans started fighting loads of Bury fans in the car park.

“The security staff got them to leave and they’ve ended up blocking the whole of Gigg Lane and then started a massive brawl.

“There were like 100 people around in a crowd and a lot of them were throwing punches and objects.

“The police arrived after five to 10 minutes and started arresting loads of people.”

@Simdru: Had the misfortune to be sat close to the Workington fans and they were by far the worst-behaved I’ve seen for some time, many absolutely off their tits before the game even started. Funny watching them get their smiles wiped off their faces though as they got played off the park

@julesgem82: This was shocking, I was at the game and its nearly all family and older people who come out first. They where racist to Mo one of our players, there pints at players. Attacked fans in Main Stand which holds a lot of older people.

@SerSquiggy: As bad outside the ground as inside. Consistent at least. I’ve seen some bad away fans at Gigg Lane before, I’ve never seen a team I would ban from ever coming back to Bury, until today. Dying to see what their shameful club has to say ?
