Fans call for the sacking of Lee Cattermole amid growing unrest at Gateshead, with more details emerging on Wednesday afternoon.
Ahead of their game against Kidderminster, journalist Pete O’Rourke posted a tweet claiming there is growing unrest at the club after several members of last season’s side were placed in a “bomb squad.”
He added: “They’ve been told to stay away from the first team, train separately in the afternoon and removed from the group chat.”
They currently sit 23rd in the National League table with 4 points from 7 games played.

Lee Cattermole, reflecting on the 4-0 defeat to Forest Green at the weekend: “Obviously disappointed with the result, performance, elements could have been better but there’s still moments in the game which if we did get the first goal, which had a good chance, what we put across the box were looped cross and then at 1-0 down we had one cleared off the line and we know goals change games.
“They change the momentum and they change the confidence and the belief for the group. So yes, the performance we’ve seen lots of things we can improve on. We hope hopefully improve them things tonight down at Kiddy, but you know, it was disappointing result. It was a long travel and you know, but the good thing about this league and and football in general, there’s always another game and that’s tonight.”
Interviewer: “And you touch on tonight Kiddy away obviously. I mean, just come into well, back into the league, obviously promoted last season, but have been doing well early on in the season. What kind of test are you expecting that you’re going to have to stand up to tonight?”
Lee: “I think when you get promoted, you get momentum of of winning games and you get the belief. They’ve got a big crowd there on Friday night. It was over 3,000 there. So, we know what type of game we’re going into.
“We watched the game as a group on on Friday night when we’re down at Forest Green. So, you know, we’ve had a good look at them and and they’re very dynamic team, very aggressive run forward and we know the threats in the first and second balls and and we got to stand up to that.
“But we’ve also recognised areas where we can go and and exploit and hurt them and we got to believe in ourselves and hopefully you know hopefully perform and then and come out with a result.”
Interviewer: “And you mentioned feeling like you had sort of moments in the game on Saturday? What do you feel like needs to to go right for you that maybe didn’t go right perhaps on Saturday tonight?”
Lee: “Yeah. I think we got more bodies around the ball higher up even though it maybe didn’t come off because the contacts weren’t there from us, you know, but there was definitely more bodies around the ball at the top of the pitch and then now it’s how can we, you know, help sustain them moments in the final third. And it wasn’t there on Saturday, but we’ve seen the bodies were there. So, how now can we fix that and make that better?
“And look at this moment in time for this group. You know, I know how big a result would be for us. I think it would really change the the belief in the group and it’s something that would help the whole club in terms of moving in the same direction and you know that is football and we’ve got a great opportunity tonight to go down there and really pull together and and and have a right go at trying to come out on the right side of results.”
Interviewer: “And I mean well I suppose a result obviously the probably the obvious answer but in terms of the challenge for the group ahead tonight what is the challenge I suppose you’re setting to them to come out of tonight and and be happy with with what you’ve seen? And obviously like I said getting a win is the obvious answer but in terms of that?”
Lee: “First of all just individually perform collectively perform and execute what we’ve worked on yesterday and and believe in it and you know a lot of the players that have come into the club I’ve been responsible for and I believe in them. seen qualities in them personally as characters and in the technical tactical side of the game and you know now it’s about getting a line together as a group and and and taking this group forward and I know how important a result would be for the group um and for the football club.
“So look it’s another opportunity tonight. It’s going to be a difficult task but it’s one I feel um we can definitely go and perform in and then you know and in football you need a little bit of luck as well. you need to, you know, get a little bit of luck in the game as well. And I feel sometimes over over the course of this season, we’ve performed in some games and we haven’t had quite had that bit of luck.
“So, yeah, look, it’s going to be a good challenge for us and it’s one we’re prepared for and I’ve seen a good reaction from the players since the weekend. So, yeah, looking forward to getting down there.”
Interviewer: “And in terms of the the fitness picture in the group, how is everything looking? “Obviously, you had a couple of games last week, a couple of games again this week, so they’re coming thick and fast at you at the minute.”
Lee: “No, we’re good. We’re going down with the same squad. So all good.”
Wonder what would’ve happened if lads from last year were given the chance to play this🤦🏽♂️

Guessing this is the “bomb squad” genuinely such a shame what has happened considering the end of last season pic.twitter.com/8Ey9jhDbEr

On Wednesday night, Gateshead picked up a sixth league defeat of the season, though Lee Cattermole was pleased with his side, saying the “performance was by far the best of the season.”
While the first half left the 29 Gateshead fans watching inside Aggborough far from impressed, the second half was a much better showing, but still, they couldn’t find the net.
Lovely finish, @Callum_dolan10. 🫡#Harriers 🦅 pic.twitter.com/4Osl2fi5Rw

Fans call for the sacking of Lee Cattermole amid growing unrest among the team at Gateshead…
@TheDB30: Get him gone. Fans don’t want him, players don’t want him, he’s toxic and not fit for management.
@andymason86: Cattermole has to go, the fans want him out the players want him out, The longer this does on the more damage is being done, Losing what little respect remains for the board
Harry Lenier: According to Pete O Rourke on X : The same guy who said Rob was leaving and was right , has now said there is growing unrest among the team and there is now a “bomb squad” , looks like it includes Chappy , Telford , Chadwick , Bowen and Fergy based off Chapman’s instagram story , genuinely never seen a club have this much of a downfall in this short time , what on earth is going on 😭
@DavidHindmarsh7: I love Lee Cattermole but it’s not working at all.
@JackRobo1209: An absolute disgrace. Sack him now before he does any more damage. Players like Sam Bowen and Harry Chapman who we are absolutely crying out for.
@archiegfcx: the club captain, chapman and bowen were instrumental to keeping us up. sack him now
@MattyJHewitt: Ah yes. Great way to run a football club.
@LRbix: Fucking get rid of him now
@ProsightMatt: Can’t believe Chapman and Ferguson are amongst those part of this. 2 of their standout players, Chapman especially was rumoured with a move away in the summer, stays, and then is treat this way. Pretty sad for the Heed… Surely given finances and their precarious position in the league they can’t afford the unrest. What does this possibly achieve? Cattermole already on thin ice as it is and then for this to come out? Yikes
@DanTakesOnFooty: It’s all going on at Gateshead. Some of the players that performed well at times last season being frozen out by Lee Cattermole. A lot of supporters are already frustrated with Cattermole and I can’t see this coming out doing him any favours at all. What a mess!
@Savlad41: Aside from the opinions of what’s right and wrong here we need to get behind the players that are trying their best to get Gateshead out another rut… the players wear the badge let’s make them wanna run through brick walls for us and let the rest take care of itself
@tashkentterror: The other point of course given some of them played well last season according to the Gateshead fans on this thread, is that if they are now transfer-listed and not wanted it doesn’t take a genius to work out where one or two might end up.
@OwenH04: Bomb squad set up and he’s not even been in the job 3 months, totally unlike a man with the character of Lee Cattermole… who saw that coming…
@Superfreak_81: He was never the right man, get him out now and give the new man a chance to get things right.
@PeterDAnderson: Given results so far this season I suggest Lee Cattermole might want to rethink it
Jack Robson: An absolute disgrace. Sack him now before he does any more damage. Players like Sam Bowen and Harry Chapman who we are absolutely crying out for. Keaton Ward has now came out and basically said he was forced out. Sack him now before he can make this club any more toxic than he already has because of his own incompetence. Absolutely appalling.
@JamieBullock91: Get them signed up @Official_Darlo
