Frustrated Hull City head coach makes serious complaint and big plea to EFL

Frustrated Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior makes a serious complaint and a big plea to the EFL amid disappointing refereeing standards.

Rosenior, along with a growing number of managers, has asked the FA and EFL for video assistant referees (VAR) in the Championship.

He have become increasingly annoyed by poor referee decisions in the second tier throughout 2022/23 and think there’s been a significant drop in refereeing standards since VAR was brought in for the Premier League, with finances riding on success in the second-tier means the technology is a must.

Hull lodged a complaint with the EFL and FA on Monday unhappy with Gavin Ward’s performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Reading.

Rosenior told Hull Live on bringing in VAR: “It would be interesting. I think football at all levels should be officiated at the same level, so for me, if we’re using VAR, then we should use it in the Championship.

“It changes the way you play, it changes the way you defend set-pieces for sure and that’s a massive adaptation period.

“The Championship, I think, is the richest league in the world in terms of what you get for winning promotion. It’s huge. It’s bigger for clubs in the Championship to be successful than it is the Premier League, it’s huge, and it can change the course of the club’s history.

“What I’m upset about. is, if I’m being honest, is since the introduction of VAR, the four-match officials are at the game and then you’ve got another group of officials watching the cameras in the offices at Stockley Park.

“That then has a detrimental effect on our level of refereeing in the Championship. Before VAR, we were using 10 groups of match officials for the Premier League level and the rest would come and do Championship games, so it would filter down.

“We’ve lost that, and we haven’t replaced it. The standard of refereeing – and this isn’t a reflection on some of the decisions we’ve had against us recently – has got worse, it’s got worse and I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

“I’m not talking about me being hard done by, I’m thinking for every club in the Championship. The standard has got worse. We’ve had conversations, but you get to a point and you keep revisiting the same things.

“Take the penalty (against City at Bristol City), it’s just a common sense decision, it’s not even a difficult decision to make or the referee’s performance the week before (at home to Preston), I don’t even need to speak about it because you can see it for yourself.

“It’s frustrating for me.

“There are processes that we need to put into place short and long-term to develop the education of referees.

“They’re talking about more investment which is great because people like me lose their jobs, and players lose their dreams based on decisions and whether they become a Premier League player or a Championship player, we need to get everything right moving forward.

“Hopefully, one day we’ll get it here (VAR) because we’ll be in the Premier League. For the moment, if you’ve got VAR in the Premier League then you need it everywhere else.”

Rosenior isn’t happy at Ward’s decision not to give a penalty in the first half when Malcolm Ebiowei’s cross strike Cesare Casadei’s hand.

He also thought there was a foul in the build-up to Andy Carroll making it level with half time approaching, among of incidents.

The decision to put Ward as official for this fixture was a controversial after he was also in charge of the game back in November.

“And at the same time, you want the referee to do his job, to see things that are clear. In terms of decisions, I don’t even want to get into that,” Rosenior said.

“I’m really frustrated, let’s leave it at that at the moment. There are a lot of things, not just through decision-making on the game, but from other people who are making decisions about the game that I can’t speak about.

“Yes, I was booked. I don’t know why. I didn’t swear, I just told him what I thought of his performance. That’s just another decision that went against us. There’s no point me speaking about it, but I can’t believe it, that’s all I’m saying.”

Fans reacted as the frustrated Hull City head coach makes a serious complaint and big plea to the EFL…

@ExChiefChrisB: Rare I’d consider disagreeing with LR, but very much do on this. The way to ensure more high quality refs in the Championship is to remove VAR to free them up. Goal tech is great, but VAR kills the atmosphere when a goal is scored & is still subjective. It has made football worse

@davidwheldrake: Mixed thoughts on VAR, as despite the poor implication of it at times…..I remember how many times “human error” stitched us up against the bigger Clubs when we were in the Premier League. It seems a success elsewhere in the World, so it could and should be here too. #hcafc

@King_CJK: A big fat no. “Football should be officiated the same at all levels” – LR quoted. That’s right. Get rid of PL VAR, free up referees sat in front of monitors in an office.

@stevenleigh3: I agree about VAR in the championship. When teams get promoted to the Premier League they have to use it so use it in the championship then you know how it works

@robincharlesw67: Nar I’ll take human error checking club badge is all it does in the top flight. Half the time

@TonyGoldSE: Just get rid of VAR in the Prem. Premier league matches are now mainly a debate about refereeing decisions. Fans and players can’t celebrate goals freely. VAR is for armchair fans. Rosenior needs to concentrate on his own job and stop worrying about referee decisions.

@jacobgarner05: Works fine in every other league or competition in the world. VAR is not the problem in the prem, it’s the people behind it.

@StevePye_92: No thanks!

@timclark59: VAR is ruining football, suck it up Liam every game has good and bad decisions you will NEVER achieve perfection, we are all human beings, concentrate on making your team better.

@MattyHC5: IF VAR was working properly, with capable people managing it and making quick correct decisions with more communication and clarity everyone would be raving about how good VAR is. Unfortunately the way its been implemented and used since it came in has been embarrassing… Reality is LR is absolutely bang on about what he says despite this. VAR in the championship is an absolute must, whether people like it or not it’d eradicate the ridiculous obvious errors in the game. The officials themselves MUST improve for VAR to work at its best. here’s obviously a conversation to be had in terms of officials ptentially being “Mic’d” up,similar to rugby, their system seems to work seamlessly. Officials must be able to explain their decisions which would benefit everyone surely? either way it needs addressing ASAP.

@JWhittlesElbow: I can’t agree with this. The principle of VAR is awful, the implementation is somehow even worse – we need to look to eradicate it, not increase it.

@Nick25391: The standard of refereeing the last couple of seasons has been awful. Refs are deciding the outcome of matches!
