Have a look at who they thought would finish from 24th to 1st below, some will surprise, others not so…
24) QPR
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 24th place (relegated) for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: QPR’s grim return from the final 30 games of last season would equate to a meagre 31 points over a full campaign, and things didn’t really improve under Gareth Ainsworth. With a squad ill-suited to his style, does his skillset extend far enough beyond motivation.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 12th place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finished 20th.
23) CARDIFF
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 23rd place (relegated) for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Sabri Lamouchi made an instant impact in his three months as boss, so the fact an extended deal couldn’t be agreed seems ominous – instead, Erol Bulut comes into 2023-24 from a standing start. With star loanees gone and goals in short supply, another struggle is like.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 19th place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finished 21st.
22) ROTHERHAM
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 22nd place (relegated) for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Strong January recruitment saved the Millers – in December they’d been horrendous – and they’ll have to deliver that standard again, now that key men have departed. With Chiedozie Ogbene’s quality gone, even Matt Taylor’s straight talking leadership may not be enough.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 22nd place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finished 19th.
21) HUDDERSFIELD
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 21st place for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Having an impact over 15 games requires different skills to Neil Warnock’s new remit of overseeing a rebuild, so retaining him is a risk. Keeper Lee Nichols may bail out his Terriers, but winning matches with 25 to 30 per cent possession tends not to last for a full season.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 11th place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finished 18th.
20) PLYMOUTH
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 20th place for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Survival is more than achievable. The long term injury to star keeper Michael Cooper won’t help early on (except in temporarily putting off suitors), but Argyle have a talented manager and they recruit superbly: defender Julio Pleguezuelo is an astonishing coup from FC Twente.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 10th place for the 2022/23 League One campaign – instead they finished 1st.
19) SHEFF WED
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 19th place for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Following an astonishing playoff turnaround to win promotion, the wind has gone out of Wednesday’s sails with a shock departure of popular gaffer Darren Moore. But if Barry Bannan can still boss games at this level, then they should keep the drop zone at arm’s length.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 1st place for the 2022/23 League One campaign – instead they finished 3rd, winning in the playoffs.
18) BIRMINGHAM
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 18th place for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: New ownership brings hope, after an impressive 17th place finish under John Eustace. Replacing the quality of last season’s loanees will be tough, though, and Koji Miyoshi and Tyler Roberts arrive with injury concerns in tow, so significant progress may have to wait for now.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 24th place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finish 17th.
17) PRESTON
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted them to finish in 17th place for the 2023/24 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Preston have only known top-half form since Ryan Lowe came in, but that could change if they don’t find goals and a more sustainable plan – since 2020, they’ve made as many loan signings as permanent ones. Liverpool right back Calvin Ramsay is a good borrow, mind…
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 10th place for the 2022/23 Championship campaign – instead they finish 12th.
