FourFourTwo predicts the 2021/22 League One table

The 2021/22 season is just around the corner, and with that in mind, we look to FourFourTwo who predicts the League One table.

We turn our attention to the third tier division, and as always, it causes plenty of reaction and debates on social media.

You can order your copy of the FourFourTwo magazine, including the much loved season preview magazine by clicking HERE.

Have a look at who they thought would finish from 24th to 1st below, some will surprise, others not so…

24) MORECAMBE

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Shrimps to finish in 24th place (relegated) of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: New division, new manager, new identity, a relatively new squad… The first taste of football to this level was always going to prove tough, but Morecambe may have had a better chance if they were working from the template that got them here. This will be tough.

FourFourTwo predicted that Morecambe would end up finishing 18th in League Two for the 2020/21 season – instead they placed 4th and won the playoffs.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Shrimps would finish 22nd in League Two, and that is where they ended up come the end of the campaign.

23) CAMBRIDGE

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the U’s to finish in 23rd place (relegated) of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Promotion last term was won deservedly through hard work and clinical play. With Paul Mullin departing, though, Cambridge ma not have enough firepower to survive as they and relative rookie Mark Bonner face a first third tier season since 2001-02.

FourFourTwo predicted that Cambridge United would end up finishing 19th in League Two for the 2020/21 season. They instead placed 2nd and won automatic promotion.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the U’s would finish 20th in League Two, instead they finished 16th.

22) AFC WIMBLEDON

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Wombles to finish in 22nd place (relegated) of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Mark Robinson impresses, bit business has been slow in SW17 – the Dons back themselves to produce some League One ready players. The Londoners did that with teenage star Ayoub Assal, but the loss of top scorer Joe Pigott could hit them very hard.

FourFourTwo predicted that AFC Wimbledon would end up finishing 23rd and relegated from League One for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 19th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish lower than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Wombles would finish 17th in League One, instead, they finished 20th.

21) CHELTENHAM

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Robins to finish in 21st place (relegated) of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Without a standout goalscorer, Town may rely on the collective to preserve their third tier status. Goalkeeper Owen Evans returns after a loan spell, but a sturdy defence and long throw threat might not be enough, even under idolised manager Michael Duff.

FourFourTwo predicted that Cheltenham Town would end up finishing 3rd and promoted to League One in the 2020/21 season. They managed to be crowned champions.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Robins would finish 16th in the League Two table, instead, they finished 4th.

20) CREWE

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Railwaymen to finish in 20th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: With key men departing, last year’s brave swashbucklers must limit the sense of transition. They need a new cluster of talent that includes full backs Travis Johnson and Rio Adebisi to step up fast – and experienced campaigner Shaun McDonald to remain fit.

FourFourTwo predicted that Crewe Alexandra would end up finishing 15th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 12th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish much lower than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Railwaymen would finish 16th in the League Two table, instead, they finished 2nd and promoted.

19) SHREWSBURY

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Salop to finish in 19th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Led by a former League One title winner in Steve Cotterill, and boosted by high profile buys like keeper Marko Marosi, natives hope for a second top half finish in seven years. But such hopes may be scuppered by a midfield that’s had very little time to gel.

FourFourTwo predicted that Steve Cotterill’s Shrewsbury Town would end up finishing 18th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 17th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish a place lower than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Salop would finish 10th in the League One table, instead, they finished 15th.

18) ACCRINGTON

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Stanley to finish in 18th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: John Coleman is hard to please, but the Liverpudlian perfectionist has never been so excited about his squad, which includes bright loanees like Man City goalkeeper James Trafford. Even the bookies aren’t convinced about Stanley’s impending doom this season.

FourFourTwo predicted that John Coleman’s Accrington would end up finishing 21st and relegated from League One for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 11th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish lower than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that Stanley would finish 19th in the League One table, instead, they finished 17th.

17) FLEETWOOD

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Cod Army to finish in 17th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: The Lancashire club, previously big spenders, are now cutting back. Simon Grayson is hardly renowned for youth progressions, so exciting talents like defender James Hill and midfield dynamo Jay Matete must mature quickly if Fleetwood are to evade a scrap.

FourFourTwo predicted that Fleetwood Town would end up finishing 4th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 15th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish much higher than their final position.

16) DONCASTER

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Donny to finish in 16th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Recent playoff tilts have been based on shrewd loan market use: great for quality, less so cohesive squad building. Richie Wellens is an excellent manager, but he should be given time to create something more lasting at the club where he’s adored.

FourFourTwo predicted that Doncaster Rovers would end up finishing 8th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 14th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish much higher than their final position.

15) GILLINGHAM

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Gills to finish in 15th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Steve Evans has turned top-half finishes at Priestfield from a rarity into the norm. Like last summer, however, the demanding Scot must replace key players – not least winger Jordan Graham – so the battle may be to uphold the status quo, rather than better it.

FourFourTwo predicted that Steve Evans’s Gillingham would end up finishing 9th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 10th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish a place higher than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Gills would finish 14th in the League One table, instead, they finished 10th.

14) BURTON

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Brewers to finish in 14th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Hasselbaink inherited strong foundations in his first stint, but his work has been transformative this time. Still, fighting the teams above will tough even with handy additions like Deji Oshilaja, meaning Burton must wear their underdog tags with pride again.

FourFourTwo predicted that Jake Burton Albion would end up finishing 22nd and relegated from League One for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 16th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish lower than their final position.

13) PLYMOUTH

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Pilgrims to finish in 13th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: With a good young goalkeeper in Michael Cooper and an attack with unpredictable qualities, Argyle have top-half potential – but must fulful it through some defensive improvement. Ryan Lowe agrees: he’s added Ipswich player of the year James Wilson.

FourFourTwo predicted that Ryan Lowe’s Plymouth Argyle would end up finishing 13th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 18th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish much higher than their final position.

12) WIGAN

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Wigan Athletic to finish in 12th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: The Latics enter this season with a far greater sense of positivity than the last, thanks to Talal Al Hammad’s takeover. Growth is inevitable – not least with the eye-catching arrival of proven striker Charlie Wyke, but just how much remains to be seen.

FourFourTwo predicted that Wigan would end up finishing 19th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 20th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish a place higher than their final position.

11) SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Owls to finish in 11th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Strutural issues and off-field uncertainty makes recruitment an unenviable task for Darren Moore. The best-case scenario is that an experienced core stays and some untested youngsters step up, allowing Wednesday to compete without a full overhaul.

FourFourTwo predicted that Sheffield Wednesday would end up finishing in 24th position, bottom of the Championship table for the 20/21 season. This took into account that they would start on -12 points for breaching the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (before the deduction was then halved).

Compared with the actual final standings, the club finished in 24th place and relegated to League One, bang on with this one.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Owls would finish 10th in the Championship, instead, they ended up in 16th place.

10) BOLTON

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Trotters to finish in 10th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: The signing of playmaker Josh Sheehan confirms that Bolton unsurprisingly arrive with loftier aims than their fellow risers. Ian Evatt has the tactical flexibility to succeed, but his ambitions for a dream double promotion may have to wait a little longer.

FourFourTwo predicted that Bolton Wanderers would end up finishing 2nd and promoted to League One in the 2020/21 season. They got the promotion bit spot on but finished 3rd.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Trotters would finish 21st in League One and relegated with their 12 point deduction for entering administration, instead, they finished 23rd.

9) PORTSMOUTH

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Pompey to finish in 9th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Pompey begin this season with a more popular management team than 12 months ago, but perhaps an inferior squad. The Cowley brothers, who favour revolution over the alternative, must work their magic late in the window to avoid regression.

FourFourTwo predicted that Portsmouth would end up finishing 1st and promoted from League One for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 8th place, falling out of the playoffs on the final day of the season. Meaning the magazine had them to finish higher than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that Pompey would finish 3rd in League One, instead, they finished in 5th place.

8) MK DONS

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted Milton Keynes Dons to finish in 8th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT (written pre managerial departure): With a promising squad, clear playing identity and an exciting managerial duo of Russell Martin and Luke Williams, MK Dons are tantalisingly close to becoming a serious force. A top six tilt is well within their range, even if they may just miss out this time.

FourFourTwo predicted that MK Dons would end up finishing 16th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 13th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish lower than their final position.

7) OXFORD

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the U’s to finish in 7th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Even after successive playoff finishes, Karl Robinson must know how to improve: become grittier in the big games. Oxford need far more than six points off top six opposition if they’re to avoid heartbreak against them at the end – or worse, miss out.

FourFourTwo predicted that Oxford United would end up finishing 5th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 6th place, losing in the playoffs to Blackpool. Meaning the magazine had them to finish a place higher than they did.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the U’s would finish 9th, instead, they finished 4th, and losing to Wycombe in the playoff final.

6) ROTHERHAM

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Millers to finish in 6th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Paul Warne retains a majority backing after relegation, and 2020-21’s bad luck suggests that he deserves another shot, having twice led the Millers up. A little more football on the decks and ruthlessness with favoured faces may be required for the hat-trick.

FourFourTwo predicted that Paul Warne’s Rotherham United would end up finishing in 22nd position and relegated from the Championship for the 2020/21 season.

Compared with the actual final standings, the club finished in 21st place, and relegated to League One. So the magazine correctly guessed who went down.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Millers would finish 5th in League One, instead, they ended up in 2nd place (based on PPG).

5) WYCOMBE

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Chairboys to finish in 5th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Having thrived as underdogs for so long, Wycombe head into this season with unfamiliar levels of expectation. They’ve added Josh Scowen to a reliable squad that, despite some notable leavers, looks even stronger than the one which got them up in 2020.

FourFourTwo predicted that Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers would end up finishing in 23rd position and relegated from the Championship for the 2020/21 season.

Compared with the actual final standings, the club finished in 22nd and relegated to League One.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Owls would finish 24th in League One, instead, they ended up in 3rd place (based on PPG).

4) LINCOLN

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Imps to finish in 4th place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: It’s easy to mourn the losses of shirt-term loan heroes like Morgan Rogers, but midfielder Lewis Fiorini could be the next Man City diamond to shimmer. The Imps have a superb boss, will retain a strong core and – they hope – a top six berth.

FourFourTwo predicted that Michael Appleton’s Lincoln City would end up finishing 10th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 5th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish five places lower than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Imps would finish 7th in the League One table, instead, they finished 16th.

3) CHARLTON

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Addicks to finish in 3rd place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Top keeper Craig McGillivray, all-rounder George Dobson and targetman Jayden Stockley have been added to a squad that just missed out on a play-off place. Owner Thomas Sandgaard isn’t alone in his promotion ambitions, but the Addicks can back it up.

FourFourTwo predicted that Charlton Athletic would end up finishing 12th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 7th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish higher than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Addicks would finish 21st in the Championship table, instead, they finished 22nd and relegated.

2) IPSWICH

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Tractorboys to finish in 2nd place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: Stature, investment and some competent managerial point to success. Paul Cook and new owner Brett Johnson must breed a new culture, but with new boys Wes Brown and Lee Evans signed alongside keeper Vaclav Hladky, this could be an overnight boom.

FourFourTwo predicted that Ipswich Town would end up finishing 7th in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 9th place. Meaning the magazine had them to finish much slightly higher than their final position.

1) SUNDERLAND

The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Black Cats to finish in 1st place of the League One table for the 2021/22 campaign.

FFT VERDICT: There’s belief that new owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has the will and wherewithal to inspire the Wearsiders up this time – and in Lee Johnson, Sunderland have the right manager for it. A new deal for Luke O’Nien is among some methodical early business.

FourFourTwo predicted that Sunderland would end up finishing 3rd in the League One table for the 2020/21 season.

The club went on to finish in 4th place, losing in the playoff semi final. Meaning the magazine had them to finish a place higher than their final position.

For the 2019/20 season, FourFourTwo predicted that the Black Cats would finish 2nd and promoted from League One, instead, they finished in 8th place.
