Former Premier League manager Phil Brown has been interviewed for a job role at Oxford City, who remain on the search for a permanent boss.
Phil Brown, who guided Hull City to the top flight and famously gave a half-time team talk on the pitch during a match against Manchester City, is believed to live in the Oxfordshire area an is already searching for his next club to manage.
The 62-year-old has been out of work since getting sacked by National League side Southend United in October, after a 4-0 home defeat by promotion contenders Chesterfield, and at the time the Shrimpers were in 20th place, one place above the relegation zone.
Despite his experience in the Prem and EFL, Brown is keen to get back on the touchline and is interested at taking Oxford City to the highest level they’ve ever been, should they continue their fine run of form and win promotion from the National League South.
He told BBC Oxford: “I was invited to speak to the guys, I jumped at the opportunity. The project is very positive.
“People say you’re a Premier League manager from the past, it doesn’t matter.
“When you’re out of work, what level your next challenge is, it doesn’t matter to me as long as the project’s got something you can work with and so long as the people you’re going to be working with are decent people.
“I firmly believe that where Oxford City’s concerned.”
Last week, it was revealed by Oxford City would be interviewing candidates for the vacant manager’s role, with more than 50 applications received since David Oldfield departed for Weymouth in January.
An eight-person shortlist has been drawn up, with caretaker bosses Andy Ballard and Ross Jenkins also interested after doing a great job for the meantime.
Ballard and Jenkins have kept the club in the National League South promotion hunt since Oldfield’s departure on the 18th of January, winning four of their five matches in charge.
The club will produce a second shortlist for a final interview once all initial interviews have taken place.
Twitter users reacted at hearing that the former Premier League manager has been interviewed for the job role at Oxford City…
@MincheryFarmWeb: Tanning salon owners in Oxford rubbing their hands with glee at the news.
@SandyBoyes: When he was on Five Live recently he emphasised how well he got on with Karl Robinson. No bad thing for Oxonian co-operation.
@PinophytaEd: ‘If the truth be told’ I hope you enjoy old, injured players, with no tactics, no plan and a whole lot of money down the drain to treat a bloke ego. @OxCityFC
@RutlandShrimper: If truth be told and at the end the day if you want a cliche riddled home for ancient and injury prone footballers then Phil Brown is exactly the man for the job
@ScottWallace_: We all know he talks an unbelievable game but does anyone do their research anymore 😂😂😂wouldn’t let him manage U10’s
@tjd01_: He’s fallen christ
