Favourites to become new Preston manager as Ryan Lowe leaves just one game into new season

We take a look at the favourites to become new Preston North End manager as Ryan Lowe leaves just one game into the new 2024/25 season.

Immediately after his departure from Plymouth in December 2021, Lowe was appointed manager of Preston, but after a 2 and a half year stay, his time has come to an end.

Preston lost 2-0 in their Championship opener against Sheffield United, with his side being booed off, and then he riled up fans more by what he said in his post-match interview.

He leaves after 125 games, of he won 47, drew 31, and lost 47, giving him a win percentage of 37.60.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Preston North End can confirm that manager Ryan Lowe has left the club by mutual consent.

Ryan joined the club in December 2021, leading us to 13th, 12th and 10th-placed finishes in his two and a half seasons as the club’s first team manager.

Following discussions that took place on Sunday 11th August, it was mutually agreed that now was an appropriate time for a change to be made.

Ryan leaves with the thanks of everyone at the club for his hard work, dedication and commitment, and we wish him and his family the very best for the future.

For the two upcoming fixtures against Sunderland and Swansea City this week, Mike Marsh – accompanied by Peter Murphy and Ched Evans – will be in charge of the team.

Arrangements beyond these two fixtures will be announced next week. – Peter Ridsdale

Ryan Lowe shared the message following his departure from Preston North End.

“Obviously, as you know, my time at Preston North End has come to an end. I’ve had an unbelievable two and a half years, met some incredible people and coached some fantastic players, but I feel now is the right time to move on.

“I’ve had an unbelievable time working with Peter Ridsdale over the last two and a half years. Thank you to Peter, Craig Hemmings and the Hemmings family for their support and backing and giving me the opportunity to manage a fantastic football club and establish myself as a Championship manager.

“A big thank you also goes to the players past and present for their attitude and application during my time as manager. I’d also like to thank the fans for their support during my tenure.

“I think now is the right time for the club to go in a different direction. I’ve always stressed since I walked through the door that if I can’t take the club any further, I’d leave it to someone else and that’s what I’m doing.

“I’m leaving the club in a good place with a fantastic squad, and I just wish the football club and everyone associated with it all the best in the future.” – Ryan

FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW PRESTON MANAGER:

Scott Lindsey – 6/4
David Moyes – 4/1
Paul Heckingbottom – 5/1
Mike Marsh – 6/1
David Healy – 7/1
Brian Barry-Murphy – 12/1
Gary Rowett – 14/1
Alex Neil – 16/1
David Wagner – 16/1

Speaking after the game, Ryan said: “I thought we started well. I thought there were some good moments in the game and we were well in the game before it ricochets and gets a deflection and bounces in.

“Obviously we’re disappointed by that and in the build-up to it we gave the ball away with a stray pass and we get caught. Before that, I thought we were well in the game. We started brightly and after that we got a foothold again and had a little bit more. We were getting balls down the sides and supporting the play.

“Second half, we started like a house on fire and came out of the blocks really fast. I thought we did well with that and then to concede a goal the way we did [was disappointing].

“Fred’s made a judgement to throw it. I thought his contribution before that was excellent, his kicking was top drawer, his decision-making was excellent. I think he got a little bit hurried because we came out the blocks in the second half and the place sort of erupted and wanted us to do things quickly.

“He’s made a judgement to throw it so he’s disappointed in that but there’s no criticism from us.”

Asked what specifically he was happy with, Ryan said: “They passed their way out from the back, they worked their way up the pitch, we had a lot more possession.

“I want the boys getting up the pitch higher. We passed the ball forwards a lot more but could have been a bit more.

“We need to play forward more. We’ve got to have options, we’ve got to have runs. Late on we put two strikers on and they’ve got to make runs down the side, and when we’ve got two eights you can see Pottsy [Brad Potts] driving inside and Kaine [Kesler-Hayden] coming on, I thought he was excellent when he came on the pitch.

“We’ve obviously got to do more to win games of football, we know that. But we’re up against an outfit who have just come down from the Premier League and most of them lads have played in that division.

“We’re disappointed overall. I thought there were some good moments in the game which we’ll have a look at and analyse, and we can just keep getting better. That’s going to be our message.”

Here’s how fans reacted with the favourites to become new Preston manager revealed as Ryan Lowe leaves just one game into the new season…

@Karlos_Albertos: Wow. Didn’t expect to see that this morning. Should have been done at the end of last season really though. #pnefc

@frankfuntime74: Never like to see a manager lose his job. Surprised at the timing but we have stagnated & need a fresh approach. Thanks for your efforts Ryan #pnefc

@JSGCFootball: Didn’t see it coming this early, seems strange to give one game and entire pre season to sack after one game unless he has lost the dressing room! Be interesting to see who takes over and if we have anyone lined up? #pnefc

@Conpne03: 1 game into the season fucking sound planning lads. Can we actually get behind the next manager?

@AdamMasefield: Thanks for blackpool home / blackburn away Ryan…. that’s about it really

@crewealex7: Careful what you wish for guys. Under Lowe you always flirted with the play offs and never looked over your shoulder…. If that isn’t punching your ( budget) weight I don’t know what is !

@Ruletero_Toffee: Poor upper management sacking Lowe after 1 game. If you weren’t happy with his performance he should have left at the end of last season. Ryan Lowe is a good lad, i’m sure he will be back in the game soon.

@peterlee7395: Back in the thoroughly bonkers championship – although sacked after one game is unusual even by those standards. Why waste your entire pre-season and presumably a chunk of the transfer budget if you don’t want him?

@AdamSalisbury1: Without a manager one game into a campaign. Nothing more than a complete joke. Choppy waters ahead.

@ChrisCogle93853: The real question is….. was Ryan Lowe sacked or did he walk before he was sacked or has he genuinely had enough of the abuse on match days? Mutual agreement doesn’t really give an accurate reason #pnefc

@bazhsw8183: Good move, but why on earth give him preseason? Clearly there is stuff going on behind the scenes, but it seems a strange timing to do this now. Going to start the season a month later than everyone whilst getting a new manager and getting set up

@liamfell2010: 3 months too late! Should have been potted after West Brom. Anyway….glad he’s gone. Time to move on now and get behind whoever takes this job on. Might just get my buzz back after this news #pnefc

@Pro_Wacker: Wow did not see this coming. Must be sick of the online hate/booing or unhappy not getting a transfer done. Didn’t expect anything against Sheff Utd, I’d have taken a point before the game. Makes me think somebody is already lined up for the job the manner this has occurred #pnefc

@jaingham123: Ok, so we have 2 choices as a club now. Either bring back Moyes, or go overseas and get a young manager with positive approach and really push some boundaries. Sheff Wednesday fucked up by not appointing Rohl first time around and rectified it. Hope north end be brave. #pnefc

@dillonmillward3: Must have someone lined up to come in, yes the football was dire at times but he did manage to pick up results, thought the club would’ve been happy with the 10th place finish last season but clearly want more which is promising, weird that he’s left if okkles is signing today🤷

@iampav: A shock at the start of a season, but taken in context with last season’s end, insistence on playing a rigid system and no improvement in sight this is not a surprise. The board marked his card last season, invested heavily and something had to give. Onwards and upwards.
