Farke perplexed by controversial sending off; Gabi Gudmundsson apologises to Leeds fans

Daniel Farke was perplexed by controversial sending off; Gabi Gudmundsson apologises to Leeds fans after the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Gudmundsson was shown a second yellow on the verge of half time, for a foul on Ismaila Sarr in the centre circle, receiving marching order following after a short delay by referee Tom Bramall.

Just before that, Leeds’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin dragged a penalty wide after 43 minutes, Palace felt Leeds defender Jaka Bijol should have been given a second yellow after a coming together with Sarr, with Oliver Glasner and Daniel Farke both booked after expressing their frustration.

15 minutes before the end, Jefferson Lerma headed in for Crystal Palace, only for it to be ruled out for offside in the build-up.

The result sees Leeds sit just three points above the relegation places, while Crystal Palace are a place above them 10 points above the drop zone.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I would trust my lads with my life. We are not perfect, but the mentality in the dressing room is second to none. In the circumstances, in a difficult away game, we defended the whole time and we didn’t give any chances away. I think in the end, we had a higher expected goals than our opponents. Fantastic spirit, defending, clean sheet, and a point away.”

On the red card: “Everyone in the stadium can see [it was the wrong decision]. It was doubtful if it was even a foul. For me, it was a clear mistake.”

On the missed penalty: “You have to accept that you can miss the biggest chances. I am just proud of how we defended. Even in the second half, there was even moments where we thought we could win the game.”

Farke, per Sky Sports: “It was another day that has proved why I would trust my boys, even with my life, because I can always count on them.

“We are perhaps not perfect and flawless, otherwise it would have been a neat half-time.

“But how we adapted to the strange circumstances also in the second half, that we had to play the whole second half under load and had to accept some strange decisions today, to show such a mentality and such a unity… [we] didn’t give any chances away.

“I think it was one of the rare games where the team that had to play for such a long period under load even had more expected goals than the home team, who was more or less chasing the game.

“We didn’t give clear-cut chances away here and there, perhaps sometimes a shot or a set-piece, but not really chances. It was the other way round, I got the feeling.

“So even in the second half, we were sometimes close, also perhaps to score the winning goal. I’m just proud of this performance and how united we were today again.

“The spirit that we showed, also the quality, the structure in the defending. Before the game, I told the lads we had travelled here in order to win this game of football because I was full of confidence and belief in my players.”

Leeds United’s Ethan Ampadu, speaking to Sky Sports: “A good point. Away form home it’s never easy and the conditions made it difficult for both teams. Going down to 10 men was difficult, but one thing you can say about anyone in a Leeds shirt is that they fight until the end and stick together. A good point in the end.”

On the missed penalty: “We can take some frustrations but we always back Dom. He has won points for us this season and I’m sure he will in the remaining games. There were times where we could have been more clinical and nicked three points in a difficult game.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner said, per Sky Sports: “We were not completely satisfied with today’s result and also with our performance in the second half.

“In the first half, overall it was maybe not the prettiest football game in the world. A lot of duels, second balls, set-plays, but I was really pleased with how we coped with the physicality today.

“It was much better than in the second half. We had a lot of possession, but it’s an issue we have. We know what we are working on in training and in the video sessions to move the ball quicker, to be quicker in the areas where we have space and then of course going into the box, but for me it feels a little bit nervous.

“We need to score, we want to score, we have to win because we are one player up and then we are just taking bad decisions and we are losing our structure.

“That’s how we are crossing when we are not in the right positions there and we are not in the right positions behind the ball, so we clear it to get the second ball, we make a foul, they kick a long ball, we clear it to get the long throw-in.

“This was a little bit the story of the second half and then staying calmer, preparing the situations and then finding the right moment to attack the box, to attack the right spaces.”

Here’s how fans reacted with Farke left perplexed by the controversial sending off; and Gabi Gudmundsson apologises to Leeds fans…

@WidowgastsM9: Can you spot the moment that Sarr stopped “being hurt”

@craiglufc97: Only books him because he doesn’t think he’s on a yellow, scandalous

@LUFCMike_: More I see this more it pisses me off. Makes you wonder why referees get half the stick they do

@JDRichardsLUFC: THE most Leeds 5 minutes ever. Poor penalty, players get yellow cards for dumb reasons, and referee has no idea what’s happening at the top level. Shambles.

@WM80_: The panic on the refs face when he realises he’s already booked, he’s only done it as palace attacked after he’d blown the whistle. Genuinely atrocious ref. How Johnson still not booked either no idea. And all he’ll get is a championship game next week.

@Stylo_____: What an absolute amateur ref. How are these the best we’ve got when they do stuff like this weekly???

@Phillyconcarne: People will moan about this red but ignore the stonewall one they should have had a couple of minutes before. My problem with it is that referees need to stop refereeing players differently when they’ve been booked, and Bramall proved today that it happens. Stonewall yellow not given because he’s booked him, then minutes later only booking a player because he doesn’t realise he’s already booked him. Not to mention it was 45 minutes in and he’d given 2 yellow cards, is it really that hard to remember who you’ve booked?

@e_LeedsUnited: VAR is destroying the standard of officiating. Over reliance on it and the referees haven’t a brain cell when it comes to making the simplest of calls. No way on earth should this have been a 2nd yellow

@WM80_: Only booked him as he forgot he was on a yellow. Sarr is a disgrace throwing himself around trying to get everyone sent off, Brennan Johnson done the same & been let off.

@rich1471: It’s not even a yellow card let alone a 2nd one. This decision could have such a huge impact on the overall league. Refs need to be help accountable

@Dan_ChargedUK: Ref forgot he was on a yellow, books him then has to check with other officials if he’s messed up. Worst officiating in the world

@whualfie_: nah if i was Leeds fan my head would be on another planet, the ref didn’t even realise he already gave him a yellow…

@elland_toad: By a fucking moron influenced by palace’s earlier appeals and completely forgetting he’d already booked him.

@mjcolclough: Should palace not have got 3 yellows in this sequence?
