Fans react after Aldershot confirm the appointment of John Coleman as their new manager

Fans react after Aldershot Town confirm the appointment of John Coleman as their new manager, as replacement for Tommy Widdrington.

The 63-year-old, who brings nearly 30 years’ experience, takes the reigns, succeeding Widdrington who resigned with the club 19th after 3 wins in 14 games.

Interim boss Alan Dowson will take charge of Saturday’s game at Scunthorpe; with Coleman’s first match next week’s FA Cup First Round tie at Weston-super-Mare.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Aldershot Town Football Club are delighted to confirm the appointment of John Coleman as the Club’s First-Team Manager.

The highly experienced 63-year-old will take over the position next week and arrives at the EBB with over 25 years of managerial experience for the likes of Accrington Stanley, Rochdale, Gillingham and many more. Prior to this, John played as a forward in a playing career spanning nearly 20 years.

Club Chairman, Shahid Azeem, said of the appointment: “First of all, all of us here at ATFC want to sincerely thank Alan Dowson and James Henry for stepping up to the plate in this interim period. It has not been easy and they have acted with true professionalism throughout. Alan and his team will lead The Shots out this weekend, and the Club are right behind them. We look forward to continuing to work with them”

“We are really excited to welcome John to the EBB Stadium.” Shahid continued: “His experience at non-league and above and what he has given to the game is nothing short of remarkable.”

John’s first interview, and any further announcements, will take place next week.

Everyone at Aldershot Town FC would like to welcome John Coleman and wish him every success at the club.

Fans react after Aldershot confirm the appointment of John Coleman as their new manager…

@OffTheLineBlog: Sensible, I feel. I see the upside. Experienced. Been there and done it. Represents a fairly safe pair of hands. Done well at #ASFC on a modest / low budget and so is a decent fit for Shots. FWIW – I would have gone for Tim Sills for #TheShots as impressed by him.

@CalMosFooty: John Coleman will bring stability on the pitch into a club that’s been chaotic so far. 61 goals across their 15 league games so far this season. Over 4 per game 🤯 Style of play won’t be amazing but it’ll be very steady and composed – exactly what’s needed IMO. #TheShots 🔴🔵

@DCon_85: 0 being distraught and 10 being over the moon, I’d say I’m a 7.5 on the scale of happiness on this appointment. Will hopefully bring experience and stability. A new era begins 🔴🔵🔴🔵

@ChilmaidStuart: At Gillingham he didn’t get a lot of credit but he identified the wasters and that has enabled Gareth Ainsworth to improve us considerably

@Tom1Walker0: A high profile name, an appointment I’m surprised Azeem has pulled off. Unless he’s been told we’ve got something coming in the future in regards of a takeover? (Copium)

@PaddyStavros: Good appointment, a proper football man.

@Owene2220: After the job he did with Waterford surprised he got one so quickly

@MorecambeFCFeed: All the best Coley 💪

@jimmy_g87: It’s a safe option, experienced, can do well with a low budget, been successful at this level before but got a tough job on his hands here. Never guaranteed success with any Manager and can’t really risk to gamble on someone with no experience of this level.

@trevk37: Interesting appointment this one, can’t deny the experience but if I remember correctly his last southern adventure wasn’t too brilliant, backroom appointments might be crucial.

@toptargets: Sorry, makes no sense to me but always happy to be proved wrong, just very rarely happens😉

@ChrisATFC87: Not sure about this

@SteveyAsp: I’m really not sure which way this one is going but once again it seems a rushed appointment.

@ryantotdell: Yes this is perfect Experience just what is needed would have loved Derek Adams but he was someone I mentioned in my top three so Welcome John

@euniesufc: Very strange appointment. Good manager with good EFL experience but is it the right fit for Aldershot? A completely contrasting style of play to Widdrington. Good luck to him.

@shauncstevens: Questionable win record apart from his time at Accy. Hope it works out!

@inkpen_julian: A very decent man… didn’t work out at the Gills, but a good appointment and knows the level very well

@JoeRapley8: Confused how to feel about this one 🤣 think it’s a fairly solid appointment but not full of excitement with it. We’ll see 🤷🏻‍♂️

@ShaunBrown995: Despite my concerns about his overall record, Coleman certainly brings the experience that we’re in desperate need of at the moment. Did a great job at Accrington with a small budget. Fingers crossed he gets us moving in the right direction – welcome John! 🔴🔵

@nickhughes1231:
Let’s hope he turns things round
Still
AZEEM OUT

@lewisblainsport: Not 100% sold on this one yet… bit of a left-field gamble. Feel like he might’ve had his day? Very limited success outside of Accrington, especially recently. At 63, it won’t be a long-term fix. I really do hope I’m wrong – best of luck to him, he’s going to need it 🔴🔵

@S_Agombar: Feel like this is the board saying “we must not get relegated” and they obviously think this will ensure that! Couple of years of this until Scotty Davies takes the wheel in the new stadium 😂 #Dreaming

@CharlieATFC: Steady the ship I hope, he’s got some more years in him

@ScottTaylorUK: Welcome to #TheShots, John. A manager who brings a wealth of experience managing higher up & will bring some stability to the football club. Let’s all get behind the appointment & move forward together. 🔴🔵🤝🏻

@Michael_White19: Interesting appointment, outside of his spell at Accrington he’s not really done too much that stands out, especially the last few seasons. Be interesting to see what changes he brings to this team
