The FA blocks a non league club’s proposed merger and cease to exist with immediate effect they confirmed in a statement this week.
Plans were revealed in May for FC Humber United to change their name for the fourth time since 2016 and hoped to relocate to Doncaster having failed to find a new long term home in East Yorkshire.
They decided to axe their current name, were then going to be known as Askern Miners FC – then wanted to keep their NCEL Division One status.
Askern Miners’ first team, who finished 17th in last season’s Central Midlands League Premier North Division, looked set to be playing in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Division Two.
The merger was subject to ratification by the authorities and has since been blocked by the Football Association.
The NCEL said in a statement: “After an investigation and a decision made by the FA Leagues Committee, the proposed merger between FC Humber United and Askern Miners FC will now not be going ahead.
“As a result, the merged club will not be taking its place in the 2022/23 Toolstation NCEL season.
“Division One will now run with 21 clubs rather than the 22 that was proposed in the provisional constitution with FC Humber United leaving the NCEL.
“The NCEL will be making no further comment at this time.”
Askern Miners tweeted a short statement in response, saying: “We respect the decision that has been taken and we will carry on doing our best for the club/town.
“If anyone has any questions you are welcome to come to our next committee meeting and we will tell you our side of the story. More information will be released at a later date.”
FC Humber United were originally formed as AFC Rovers, then renamed to East Yorkshire Carnegie before winning promotion to the NCEL in 2017. They changed their name to East Hull in 2019, in the hope of one day providing competition for Hull City, before changing to FC Humber United last year.
Askern – then known as Askern Villa, last played in the NCEL in 2013 before dropping into the Central Midlands League then relaunched as Askern Miners in 2020 and immediately won the Doncaster Rovers Saturday League and returned to the CML.
FC HUMBER UNITED’S LATEST STATEMENT:
Further to recent announcements over the past few days it has been decided that the club will not be making an affiliation for the 2022/23 football season and therefore will not be competing in any further in football.
As of now the club will cease to exist and the journey ends.
Originally it was thought to continue and start all over again locally to the Humber region however this decision has been thought over many times and it is just simply not a viable option to continue.
We would like to go on record to thank everyone who has supported the club over the past 18 months, the sponsors, partners and those who came to watch us, we certainly didn’t disappoint with the amount of goals scored at both ends of the pitch and entertainment on and off the pitch during last season.
It has been a pleasure to meet the small number of decent people in non league football within the NCEL and the others that have found happiness in various social media posts over the last few weeks, the time has come to move on and latch onto another clubs downfall behind your keyboards.
Thank you to all at the NCEL and good luck to the 21 clubs competing in NCEL Division 1 for the 2022/23 season.
ASKERN MINERS STATEMENT:
On 24th April 2022, AMFC received a message from a member of Humber FC. Long story short, we were asked for a ground share. We declined. This was followed by a meeting with 4 members and the manager of Humber FC who expressed an interest in finding a permanent home in a supportive community otherwise they faced folding. We were assured that the team was self-sufficient in terms of finance, leadership and committed players, manager, coaches, physio etc. It was suggested that they come under our umbrella and keep their team, ran primarily by their members. We firmly believed we were helping a team in need. This was NEVER intended to be a leapfrog into Step 6 or as any disrespect to anyone.
However, over the last five weeks we have worked with Humber FC, the relationship has broken down. Despite our best efforts, we have found that we are not in a position to prop up a team who have none of the positives they said they had. Not entirely their fault but we cannot gamble with our club. As of 2nd June 2022, AMFC have no business or connections with Humber FC. We tried our hardest to help but it was not to be. We wish them all the luck in the future.
As a club we now feel it is important to focus on our loyal junior and senior players, volunteers, supporters and local community values ❤️💙⚽️💙❤️ #backtobasics #uptheminers
