Ex-Premier League winner plays his first match in nearly two years for Macclesfield

Ex-Premier League winner Danny Simpson plays his first match in nearly two years after turning out for Macclesfield in midweek.

Simpson, 36, made his debut for the Silkmen in their 4-2 win against Tranmere Rovers to progress through to the Cheshire Senior Cup Third Round.

With the help of Robbie Savage as the director of football for the Northern Premier League Premier Division side, they have been able to bring former Premier League players, having seen ex-Newcastle player Papiss Cisse in training with the team and they have also signed Oumar Niasse on a short-term deal.

And on Tuesday ahead of their clash against Tranmere in the Cheshire Senior Cup, Simpson made the rare appearance in their matchday squad, as did Niasse, with the latter scoring a hat-trick.

Simpson played a total of 78 minutes in his first appearance for Macclesfield.

Simpson last professionally played for Bristol City in 2022 and revealed last month he had been training with Savage’s side while studying for his coaching badges at Old Trafford.

He said when featuring on the Filthy Fellas podcast: “No one even knows this but I train at Macclesfield twice a week.

“I have some kind of get up, go to a training ground with the lads, train and kick a football.

“I’m eligible to play if they ever need me, I’m sort of helping them out as well, Alex Bruce has got the job, Phil Bardsley, Robbie Savage is involved I needed somewhere to go this was before United to help him with the coach and stuff cuz I was lost for six months, I was lost man.

“I’m just trying to help the boys out like they’ve got young kids that want to get into the into league football and you need some kind of routine cuz I lost my way man, it’s mad like you go from like that, you got your ex teammates are still training, your boys your mates mates at work, and you getting up you’re like ‘what am I doing?’.

“Going in the Carrington every other day, yeah it feels like home.”

This is how fans reacted after seeing the ex-Premier League winner Danny Simpson plays his first match in nearly two years for Macclesfield, plus an appearance from Niasse…

@tom_taylor1997: Danny Simpson and Oumar Niasse😂

@silkmenarmy: Previously Oumar Niasse and Danny Simpson playing for Macc was only possible on Football Manager. Now it’s in the Cheshire Senior Cup. The world is glitching 🔵⚪️

@SamJDalling: Great to see Danny Simpson back playing!

@bigdikky5: Wage bill on macc side probably similar to ours tonight… Nolan and niasse a lot of league experience #tfc

@MarkKav15119614: Niasse has dropped 8 levels in 3 years

@rossEFC95: £13.5m we paid for him, even the most pessimistic of our fans at the time wouldn’t have predicted him to be at Macclesfield within 7 years

@MJTRFC: Danny Simpson & Oumar Niasse playing against us for Macclesfield in the Cheshire Cup is the most ridiculous stat I think I’ve ever read in the history of the English game

@trfcbenla: 2nd round of the Cheshire Senior Cup and we’ve already played 3 former premier league players, this is such a serious competition

@RichMyself: Just Danny Simpson and Oumar Niasse lining up for the Silkmen tonight! Nothing to see here

@jrushtonnn: Wow, Danny Simpson, Oumar Niasse And Seb Thompson Starting, Hopefully We Have It In The Bag Tonight. Can’t Afford To Be Getting Knocked Out Of All These Cups. COYS #silkmen

@ThreeBluebirds_: Oumar Niasse doing the business in the Cheshire Senior Cup 😮‍💨

@MCFCHarry98: What the fuck 😂

@DanCCFC_: I refuse to believe Niasse scored 1 goal let alone 3 in the same game

@DannyReece7: The year is 2023 and Oumar Niasse has scored a hat trick in the second round of the Cheshire Senior Cup

Form is temporary.
Niasse is permanent.

@Kevin_1878: ‘how the fuck have we someone playing for us who’s last transfer fee was to the premier league for 15m’ says every Macclesfield fan
