England booed off by fans, Harry Kane left fuming, Tuchel sends defiant message to critics

England were booed off by fans, Harry Kane was left fuming, and Thomas Tuchel sends a defiant message to critics after defeat to Senegal.

The Three Lions suffered a historic loss, beaten 3-1 at the City Ground despite opening the scoring through Harry Kane.

Ismaïla Sarr pounced with an equaliser on 40 minutes, then Habib Diarra breaks through unchallenged with around 30 minutes left of the game remaining.

With the game coming to a close, Jude Bellingham scored for England, only for it to be controversially ruled out for handball by Levi Colwill in the build-up.

Cheikh Sabaly scored on the counter attack in the 93rd minute to make it a third for Senegal, England losing to an African side for the first time in their history.

Lee Dixon (Former England defender on ITV): “That sums England’s performance over the last two games up.

“They took an age taking the free-kick – 2-1 behind and the clock is running down, but they took two minutes to take the free-kick.

“Senegal have deserved this win, they really have.”

Roy Keane speaking on ITV at half-time: “If this is a young right-back starting out in the game, you are thinking inexperience. But do you know what I think? People saying it is a lack of concentration, I think it’s lazy.

“I think he has been lazy here. He is a vasty-experienced player and he just cannot be bothered to get back in there. If it comes in, you are ready for it. He is on his heels and he almost cannot be bothered.

“I know he had a difficult couple of months but for a vastly-experienced player, you cannot be making mistakes like that.”

Roy Keane after the game: “They are all waiting for something to happen. They don’t look like a happy group. Are they really all in it together? I’m not so sure.”

Leon Osman (on BBC Radio 5 Live at the City Ground): “We thought we could come and see what Thomas Tuchel could do to this team. The next step in the development of this young, exciting team.

“But actually it looks like we have taken a step back. It’s back to the drawing board. Yes, it’s a friendly but the experiment didn’t work tonight.

“Senegal were better and deserved it, and England go into the summer on the back of an eye-opening defeat.

“I am more looking at it in the sense of we got to the finals of major competitions under Gareth Southgate. Yes, you want to tweak things but you can’t step too far away from what had been working for them.

“You just want to tweak and perfect things. Thomas Tuchel is changing the whole system and changing what these players have been used to.

“If you are a top manager and going into a club, for instance Arne Slot at Liverpool, how much did he change from Jurgen Klopp? He just made little changes and didn’t change the whole system.”

Sami Mokbel (BBC Sport Senior football correspondent at the City Ground): “England have been awful tonight. A year to the World Cup, this team looks a million miles away from being able to compete.

“It’s a friendly, yes. But it’s hard to spot any sort of pattern in England’s play.

“A chorus boos greeted the final whistle. One fan in front of the press box screamed “disgraceful” at the end of the game. Another screamed “Tuchel out”.

“The natives aren’t happy. No wonder.”

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to ITV: “Not good enough. We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren’t clicking, we’re not finding the right tempo. We’ve lost that aggressive nature that we had.”

On Jude Bellingham’s goal being disallowed: “If you know the rules it’s not handball. That gets us back in the game and maybe we can go on and win the game, so it’s a big moment. It’s something we will discuss later.”

On how they can improve: “We’re not going to panic but we know we need to be better. New ideas, there’s new players coming into the team that don’t have experience at international level. It’s a mixture of things but no excuses. We need to find it quick, the World Cup is going to come around really fast so every camp is really important right now.”

Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Fantastic night. We knew we could do something in this game. It was a tough game but we showed our personality and showed we can play at this level. We won 3-1 so we can be happy.

“It is fantastic. We are not used to making history and we made it when we won AFCON, and we made it tonight, We want to continue writing the story of Senegal. We wanted to show we have a good nation.”

England boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to ITV: “Yeah of course, it’s a disappointing result. Not sure if we did not deserve a little bit more result-wise. Felt a bit frozen, not active enough for a long time over the match. We defended quite well for long periods in the first half and then our best period came when we were 2-1 down. We conceded the first two goals – very easy goals, we need to defend better.

“The reaction was good after we were down. We suddenly were more active, more free, more fluent, more aggressive. We had big chances to equalise.”

On the disallowed goal: “I just saw it, it looks more the shoulder than the hand. I saw it as a goal needs to be checked, it is the first time the referee revisits a goal. So either it is a mistake, so take it away. Or it’s not a mistake, so it’s a goal.”

On bringing Ivan Toney on late: “It was more than three minutes. I think Ivan is a specialist for these situations, we created a lot of chances with Morgan Gibbs-White, Ebs [Eberechi Eze], Morgan Rogers and with Jude [Bellingham] in fluid positions. I think Ivan is the strongest when we have a lot of balls into the box, and that was the case so we got him ready at 80 minutes.”

Twitter users gave their thoughts after England were booed off by fans, Harry Kane was left fuming, and Tuchel sends a defiant message to critics…

@mrgarethrdavies: Sack him now while there’s plenty of time for someone else to give it a proper go! Get Sir Gareth back. This wouldn’t have happened on his watch.

@justin_finch: Too many 7/10 type players are being selected. We keep rotating because we think we have a wealth of talent. The reality is we have wealth of 7/10 players who are not good enough to win a World Cup. We need to stick with the 8/10+ players. If we are not careful we will end up going into the next tournament with our best players not being used to playing in the same team again. Time for Walker and Henderson to move on!

@kingofchezo_WBA: Players like Kyle Walker, Jordan Henderson are toast, they’re done as international footballers, time to stop ‘experimenting’ with the likes of these 2.

@westhamnewshub: Whilst England are being played off the park by Senegal & Madueke is more interested in a nutmeg than delivering a meaningful cross or shot… Bowen with 21 G/A last season & ending the season as the most inform English attacker is watching from home 🤷🏻‍♂️ Poor from Tuchel #ENGSEN

@MikeyBCFC: Probably one of the worst defensive and midfield performances I’ve seen. The difference in the ‘togetherness’ between both sets of teams was obvious. Yes we looked better when Jude and co came on. But so many looked lost with what to do with the ball or where to put themselves.

@mark_v1: Saw better style of play under Southgate and Carsley

@dohamovers: Bring back Carsley… and play Jones, Palmer, Gordon, Gibbs-White, Elliot, Branthwaite, Colwill, Trafford, Harwood-Bellis, Gomes, Ramsey, Archer, Madueke, Smith-Rowe and Livramento – all winning the U21s euros – all used to playing together… no brainer really…

@10woz_: It’s genuinely impressive how Thomas Tuchel has made this England team even more boring to watch than we were under Southgate. Fair play

@jasoncfreeman: He’s the wrong choice and everyone knows it. @FA you’ve made a mistake. The best 11 English players at any given moment don’t need coaching – they’re coached all year – they need motivating. They need inspiring. Do you think that’s what Tuchel does? 🤷‍♂️

@luke_cfc99: He’s had two games, four camps, at the end of a hectic season for all players. He’s called up some questionable players and also experimented but September, October and November camps will really tell us where we’re at, and he’d have learnt something from what he’s done so far.

@NFFC_EPL:
Southgate knew Walker was finished
Man City knew Walker was finished
AC Milan know Walker is finished
The entire country knows Walker is finished
Yet Tuchel thinks otherwise 😂 there’s the problem, he’s clueless #ENGSEN
