Eddie Howe speaks out on Anthony Gordon’s angry reaction to being subbed at Brentford

Eddie Howe speaks out on Anthony Gordon’s angry reaction to being subbed in the Premier League game at Brentford over the Easter weekend.

The manager has cooled any tensions between him and the player after the £45million man’s frustrated reaction to being taken off.

Gordon was substituted over concerns on a knock. The pair were both smiling and had arms around each other minutes later, but it was footage of the Gordon’s unhappy moment to being subbed off that got a lot of people talking.

After the game Howe said: “From my side, there was 30 seconds left and he was down holding his ankle so I put an experienced player on the pitch. It is no reflection on his time on the pitch (to take him off).

But the Newcastle boss did say that Gordon must learn to control his emotions. Speaking in his post-game press conference, Howe pointed to the player’s passion.

Howe said: “I’ve got no problem. Anthony is passionate boy. He wants to do well, but there was seconds left on the clock and we wanted to get Matty on because Anthony was holding his ankle.

“He just needs to control his emotions in that moment, but there are no problems.

“His enthusiasm, aggression and motivation levels are really high. He’s fiercely determined to do well and achieve. It’s one of his strengths and we want to embrace that, we love that about him but in certain moments he needs a cool head as well.…”

Gordon and Callum Wilson were introduced at the half time break, which helped Newcastle come back from a goal behind to win 2-1. With the victory, Newcastle are back in third place and still firmly on track to secure a Champions League slot.

PRE-MATCH CONFERENCE

Interviewer: Anthony Gordon obviously unhappy, frustrated, shall we say, when he came off the pitch at the end last week at Brentford. He is feisty when he’s on the pitch, I think that’s fair to say.I think that’s probably what attracted you. I think you’ve said that before, to buy him here, have you had to address a situation, speak to him this week regarding what went on last Saturday?

EH: Yeah, we’ve had a conversation.I think you’re absolutely right. His enthusiasm, aggression, motivation levels are really, really high, and I think he’s fiercely determined to do well and achieve, and it is one of his hallmarks and it’s one of his strengths, and we want to embrace that and we love that about him, but I think in certain moments, he needs a cool head as well. So I think it’s about trying to explain the situation, talk through it. I’ve got no issue with him at all. He’s trained really well this week. He seems the complete opposite off the pitch. He seems a very sort of chilled character off the pitch.

Interviewer: Is he just different when he crosses that white line?

EH: Yeah, he is. And I think that’s what you want. You want good people off the pitch, you want good role models and good professionals that are living their life right, to try and be successful and on the pitch. You want people to absolutely want to win and do everything in their powers to try and achieve that and be really passionate about what they’re doing. So I’ve got no issue with that. And that’s, as I say, take that away from him and he’s not the same player. So he needs that. Yeah. Just needs a little bit of refining around the edges. But let’s focus on the positive, what he did when he came on the pitch last week, he changed the game for us. He was really good.

There was plenty of reaction as Eddie Howe speaks out on Anthony Gordon’s angry reaction to being subbed at Brentford…

@MagpieMadman: Absolutely love this! #nufc #nufcfans

@JasonWilliams75: I would love to see him start, but trust in Eddie’s plans.

@hebburnscotty: I can understand his frustration, he’s waited for chances and looks desperate to impress, as long as that’s the end of it, no problem but he needs to understand whatever Eddie does it’s for the good of the team

@MichaelNUFC_: “You want good people off the pitch, role models, good professionals that are living there life right to try and be successful, and on the pitch you want people who absolutely want to win.” Absolutely perfectly put by Howe. Gordon’s got the perfect man managing him right now

@EdwardDalby1: Well said boss. He’s a young lad .

@LightfootShane: He will start tomorrow. Time 4 him 2 prove us all wrong

@5MinsToMidnight: Sounds like he’s recognised that he was in the wrong. Hopefully the rest of the squads positivity will continue rubbing off on him and it won’t happen again.

@BurridgeLes12: Thank goodness 😅 let’s hope he get a chance tomorrow, as it’s going to be a hard game 👏

@Frank_uk2012: Absolute class from Howe

@TheToonReview: Brilliant once again from Eddie Howe. The whole thing was sorted and put to bed very quickly.

@JoelErrington: World Class communicator

@lee1892Johnson: My manager……. move on and use it as a positive @anthonygordon #nufc 💪🏻

@adelewalker1979: AKA “got a right bollocking” ⬇️

@GThirlaway: Start him tomorrow, he’ll have Ashley Youngs life over that side (if he’s played there) even that moreno or whatever he’s called on the other side, he’ll do him aswell.

@danw_1986: Everton did well to get rid of him.

@AndrewChambers2: Heat of the moment. It wouldn’t have been accepted and doubt he will do it again. EH manages these things behind closed doors. Can’t fault the lads energy a desire to play and prove himself. Hence getting frustrated.

@toffee5000: An ego out of control. Weird considering he has potential but has performed like an average footballer

@dam_1973: Down the middle on this for me. Don’t like to see the spay dummy routine but it shows he wants to play football. Didn’t want him when we signed him for his antics at Everton but he has shown flashes of what he is capable of. Still a bairn and has some maturing to do 🤞

@craig_latham: Needs to stop acting like he’s achieved something other than a fat wallet!!! Although that’s most likely the issue

@SarahJFoster1: He’s a great footballer … Eddie knew what he was taking on .. just demonstrating his frustration personally

@SpudAndo: It would easy with his behaviour at the end of his time at everton that this is nob head behaviour, but i usually see this as a player passionate to be on the pitch and perform. Id rather give him the benefit of the doubt

@olddogg87: Such an awful player, one of the most overrated players ever and won’t be there long

@paulcaff: Can’t believe we got 40 million quid for him

@LEiGH_331: Fine him wages and stick him in the reserves – can’t be publicly disrespecting your manager like that! 🤷🏻‍♂️
