Derby’s Wayne Rooney is reportedly in trouble with the FA after having a post-match rant about the referee Tim Robinson on Saturday.
The Rams manager is facing an FA sanction after his extraordinary outburst in which he called for a referee to be ‘banned’ over a controversial penalty decision.
He was speaking in the aftermath of his team’s 2-1 away defeat at Swansea City, with the club’s Championship survival into serious doubt.
Derby are second-bottom in the league and nine points from safety with just five matches remaining.
Rooney was fuming at what he thought was a blatant penalty denied to Derby in the final minutes of the fixture when his side were desperately looking to get an equaliser.
Derby sub Bartosz Cybulski was taken down in the box while looking to get on the rebound, with all his fellow teammates appealing for a spot kick. Robinson, however, was unmoved, despite Rooney protesting on the touchline.
The Derby boss did not hide his disgust when speaking in his post-match press conference.
‘I think everyone in the stadium agrees (it was a penalty), the Swansea manager, the Swansea staff, the Swansea fans, Derby players, staff, fans, everyone saw it was a clear penalty apart from the four officials,’ Rooney said.
‘I have said it time and time again. I understand it is difficult to give it when it is a tight one.
‘When it is a clear obvious foul and penalty it leaves a lot of questions I have to ask the officials. I hope the referee gets banned and fined because that is not good enough.’
Rooney’s rage wasn’t just aimed at the ref, but also ALL officials including the VAR team, who he believes should have overturned the penalty decision as a clear and obvious error.
He highlighted that his side have had enough difficulties to manage with the points deduction and financial uncertainty without being, in his eyes, hampered by poor officiating.
‘We have got a good, young, honest group of players who are working every day to try and help this club to try and get through the difficulties it is going through,’ Rooney said.
‘We have got a young player (Cybulski) playing his second game as a sub, he has got an opportunity to score and is wrestled to the ground and the officials don’t see it. It is crazy.
‘You can ask what do we do, do you get VAR in but the officials are looking at VAR on the screen and they are still getting decisions wrong. So I don’t know where we go.’
A month ago, following a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff, Wayne Rooney claimed that Derby are ‘unwanted in the Championship‘.
The former footballer turned manager insisted that the officiating was “unacceptable”.
It appeared as though defender Curtis Davies may have been fouled in the incident that led to the Bluebirds to score.
Festy Ebosle was also bundled over in the buildup to the goal, however Rooney didn’t specify which in particular he thought should have been blown as a foul.
When asked what went wrong, he said: “Ask the officials. I have been unhappy with the officials for the majority of the season. It’s very frustrating because we’ve got a group of very good, young, honest players giving everything. They’re being spoken down to and they’re not getting decisions.
“I said it after the last game, I asked the fourth official ‘Why do they not give us any decisions?’ Is it something to do with the situation we’re in? I’m just asking the question.”
Speaking specifically about the incident in the Cardiff game, he said: “I think it’s a clear foul. We have to defend better after that, but it’s unacceptable.
“What these young lads are doing is inspiring. It’s inspiring the city of Derby. So it’s frustrating that we’re not getting the luck or the decisions. I questioned it after the last game. Is it because I’ve questioned the officials? Nobody likes getting questioned.
“Is that why the fourth official didn’t speak to me with any respect or dignity?”

Derby’s Wayne Rooney is reportedly in trouble with the FA after his post-match rant about the referee, this is what social media users said…
@Jack_Pow: Refs practically untouchable now. Which is exactly why the standards have fallen to what they are now.
@DaleyDCFC: For speaking the truth 🤔 too much protection for refs who cost teams vital points 🤬
@gcw047: How are referees ever meant to improve their performances if they aren’t called out and have their attention brought to their mistakes? They choose ignorance over improvement as its the path of least resistance.
@bluejon74: Var in the championship 🤷♂️
@PigeonSpondon: Vendetta against Derby
@samsandars: Wasn’t just the pen. A min later, gave a free kick right on the edge of the box then blew whistle for full time and didn’t let us take the free kick. Most refs let the free kick take place then blow the whistle.
@chrisjustsaying: Its a joke refs can’t get called out. They could end up costing clubs a fortune by their mistakes but God forbid they get criticism of a player or manager
@wragg_nick: Been the same all season, shit decision after shit decision. Same for alot of other teams I know, but these refs need calling out, shocking performances week in week out.
@pablo_dwyer: Rooney spoke the truth. 🤷♂️ The refereeing in the championship is appalling. Why doesn’t the ref tell us why he made these appalling decisions 🤷♂️🐏
@TheoWatsonTDC: Banning a manager for speaking the truth. The penalty is one of the most blatant ive seen for a very long time
@METwedds: Referees. Completely unaccountable. Standard in the championship is appalling.
@xJammsterZx: The man speaks the truth not just for derby but the whole of the championship. They’re are multiple decisions each game that refs consistently get wrong in the championship
@Max_Elliott333: Well refs are only going to get shitter if they aren’t pulled up or punished for their mistakes
@Officialben__: He gets asked his opinion but when he gives it he gets in trouble? This needs to change
@NffcAlan: It’s not often I agree with anything that comes out of Wayne Rooney’s mouth, but his condemnation of referee Tim Robinson for missing a blatant penalty against Swansea was “spot” on. This was the same ref who 3 days earlier was awful in our win over Coventry. Coinicidence! 😔
@slaney_kieran: We’ve had Robinson 4 times this season & he has:
1) Missed a “red card” on Forsyth which was awarded retrospectively 2) Missed stonewall penalty for #dcfc vs Forest at PP 3) Misses red card for Grabban at CG, 4) harsh red card for Byrne at Millwall 5) Stonewall penalty vs Swansea
@mccalton: Simple fact is, the officiating in the Championship (and I assume the rest of the leagues) is poor at best. We’ve been on the end of some lucky decisions and some shit ones but there needs to be a massive review of the standards in the league(s).
@KSquires37: I expect Wazza will be getting a fine for speaking out of turn about the officials. But it has to be said as they are absolutely shocking!
@RyMozley: Maybe football is at the point now where the officials should have a post match interview and explain their decisions!
@Myers2409: Spot on 👏🏻 the standard is a disgrace
@Clarkey_No1: Don’t worry Wazza lad you’ll have a new set of referees next season… 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
