Fans react to ‘baffling comments’ from Luke Williams after Peterborough beat Barnsley on penalties

Fans react to what is described as ‘baffling comments’ from Luke Williams after his Peterborough side beat Barnsley on penalties.

A howler from Peterborough keeper Alex Bass gifted Barnsley’s opener, Cameron McGeehan pouncing on a mistake, his chance coming back off the bar, but netted the rebound after just two minutes, but the Posh fought back with goals from Harry Leonard (19′) and Danny Ormerod (27′).

Barnsley’s Reyes Cleary made it 2-2 just before half time, He then out Barnsley ahead on the 74th minute, before Ormerod made it 3-3 on 88 minutes and took the tie to penalties, to which Peterborough won 7-6.

EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS:

After the game, Luke Williams’s comment caused a stir, first, as heard in a clip where he spoke to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, he said:

“I don’t listen to noise, so I have no feeling different to any other time because just noise. I’m not interested in that.”

Interviewer: “Ok. The Cup draw tomorrow night, anybody you want in the fourth round?”

Luke: “No, don’t mind.”

Interviewer: And I know you spoke about it in the pre-match and you said you don’t worry about it, but it’s the first time the club have got to the fourth round since 2009, so that’s quite an achievement.

Luke: “I wasn’t here, so…”

Interviewer: “And then back to the league on Saturday.”

He also spoke with the club’s media…

Interviewer: “Well through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a penalty success. It was a long night in the end. How do you look back on it?”

Luke: “Yeah, it was a roller coaster ride, but I think that just the spirit and the determination from the group was just brilliant. Brilliant.”

Interviewer: “Talk us through the start because it was a horrendous start, wasn’t it? The last thing you needed is what happened in that circumstance. And I guess it can happen when you want to play out from the back, but not the ideal start.”

Luke: “Yeah, not ideal. I think the the opposition player is just inside the box before the ball is played and so we should have stopped and said no we’re not taking it until he’s outside. But yeah, difficult start but we bounced back from it and then things went wrong again, but we’ve somehow found the courage to keep going and take it to penalties.”

Interviewer: “It was a bit like a game of murder ball really, wasn’t it? In terms of end to end, was a basketball game. There was no real element of control in it. I guess you’ve spoken at length, haven’t you, sometimes if you play two strikers or strikers near each other, can leave gaps elsewhere. How did you view the control you side had of the game?”

Luke: “If that’s what everyone wants is two strikers, two strikers and then… Yeah, I said that the middle of the pitch will be empty and it’s impossible to control again, but that’s okay. I’m here to try and give everyone what they want.”

Interviewer: “In terms of Danny Ormerod, obviously he got the second and third goal in the game. The first one is a great header at the back post from Harley Mills free kick and then he repeats the trick with a one really late on in the game.”

Luke: “Yeah, brilliant performance. Just looks like another fantastic signing. Very, very excited. Congratulations to Danny, brilliant performance.

Interviewer: “Yeah, and two assists I think from Harley Mills as well, which is obviously very pleasing from someone who’s obviously got that in the locker.”

Luke: “Yeah, definitely, he’s got a great technique, hasn’t he? So, it’s a good combination, it? Harley Mills left foot and Danny Elmwood and Harry Leonard, so that’s a really exciting combination.”

Interviewer: “You had a challenge in terms of your team selection because there was no James Dornelly available to you tonight and obviously Carl Johnston neither available to. So you went with Lucca Mendonca in that particular position. He was always going to be up against it, against arguably one of the better wingers in the division in Reyes Cleary. A tough assignment for him but he stuck to his task throughout the 90 minutes.”

Luke: “I was really pleased. I thought he’d done brilliant. I think really it’s impossible for any team to keep him out for the whole game. So, yeah. He had some great moments, overall, Luca had done very well. I was very impressed with him.”

Interviewer: “What was the situation with guys? James Dornelly, obviously, he was someone who was playing at the weekend, was just Saturday, Tuesday with a knock. It’s hard to get him up for.”

Luke: “Yeah, he has some soreness in his calf and it was too much to play. then, like I said, we have Luke and we want Luca to get as many minutes as possible, so it was a brilliant opportunity and now he’s been involved in a really big game for us.”

Interviewer: “Yeah, a few people raised eyebrows when they saw Patryk Sykut playing for the 21s today earlier on, they finished 3-3 as well in an entertaining game. The situation with him, is he just bodies on the bench or is he managing his load?”

Luke: “Yeah, he’s a brilliant, talented player. have a lot of players at the moment in a similar position, but we’re, I mean, Patrick is very young, he has a very, very good future, but we’re so excited about him and really, for him to play in a game and play 90 minutes football, you know, I went to watch the Luton game, he was fantastic, brilliant. So it’s really great to keep him playing and at some point he’s going to feature more for the first team and he’s going to have I imagine he’s going have an excellent career. So there’s nothing to worry about with Patrick.”

Interviewer: “In terms of the penalties, is that something you practice as a group? Is that something you can’t really replicate on the training ground? How did you view the spot kicks in terms of who took them and whether you were preparing for them?”

Luke: “Yeah, I think the best thing is the the pause after the whistle because that shows the player running the strategy to try and make sure they prepare themselves properly. that was really that was really pleasing to see that. And then a very high standard of penalties. We didn’t miss a penalty. So that’s really full credit to the staff and the players.”

Interviewer: “And a word for Alex Bass because some people will fold if they make a mistake early on in the game, but he ended up making some really, really key saves, including of course, one in the shoot up.”

Luke: “Yeah. And we’ve had to thank Alex Bass many times since I’ve been here for helping us to remain in the game or helping us to win a game. He’s been incredible. So yeah. And then of course he makes a massive save in the shootout, so let’s concentrate on the positive things that he does rather than something that didn’t go his way.”

Interviewer: “The draw, mean, you’re now into the fourth round, I mean, surely the gods can shine on us in terms of a potential big tie in the next round, because that would be rewarded for the efforts that you’ve gone through to get to this level.”

Luke: “Yeah, that would be fantastic. I’m sure we’ll all love to play one of the giants and beat them and then go through and play another one. That would be brilliant. I’d love for us to all be watching the draw tomorrow night.”

Fans react to ‘baffling comments’ from Luke Williams after Peterborough beat Barnsley on penalties…

@LodzGreen: Great comedic timing releasing the comments from the manager saying he had to play two up top because it’s what “people” wanted shortly after the chairman has tweeted how much he loved seeing two up top. I hope this becomes a bit #pufc

@JohnVerrall: Heard this last night. An utterly bizarre interview. I want someone who actively enjoys being manager of Peterborough United and has some degree of passion for it to be in charge. I do not believe Luke Williams ticks either of those boxes.

@nathan_young92: He’s so rude to bbc cambs, every time I listen I actually cringe 🤦🏻‍♂️ also says he doesn’t listen but then tells club media he only played 2 up top because it’s what other people wanted…

@louiseLunaPosh: Why did he respond so rudely when asked about us only being in the 4th round since 2009 🤦‍♀️

@JohnVerrall: ‘I wasn’t there’. Yeah, we know that as that was when Posh were fun to support! 🤣

@Werrington2: What a car crash of an interview. He doesn’t want to be here, does he?

@ZPosh12: Can’t get my head around it. Whether you’re Williams in or out we are all excited to be in the 4th round for the first time in a long time, with the potential for a big club draw tonight. And he’s acting like it’s nothing. sounds like he wants to sack himself.

@AndyCricket100: I don’t understand why he’s so prickly towards radio Cambridgeshire. His answers are given in the manner like he’s had an argument with someone but has to respond with something. Not a good thing to be doing. His times up.

@DownTheLineFC: Strange that? Only picked two up top because that’s what other people wanted…. Starting to sound more and more like he’s not picking the team

@Ryan19Stephens: Look closer just before the penalty shootout👍 it ran alarm bells for me… Barnsley all huddled around the manager talking, us lot was just standing there figuring it out for themselves

@LukeRivett95: Clear as day he’s asking to be sacked. He’s lost his head in that interview. Extremely odd

@HillingdonPosh: Blimey – hardly a Paxman Interview and he’s gone right the other way. It’s his job to get the most out of the players in a formation that benefits the team and the club – his way isnt working – if thats his attitude he should leave now

@DazzerG123: 100% – that is a man right there in that interview that hates his job and wants a new one, we should oblige because he will just go as soon as he gets the chance in any case

@PoshGunner: Never heard someone sound so disinterested 🤦🏻‍♂️

@RJMOfficial25: This is the first feeling I’ve had where it sounds like he’s checked out. Can’t even be buzzing for the club to do something we haven’t since 2009. This could be a long month 😕 #pufc

@JoshGreenMedia: Some truly bizarre comments from Williams yesterday. You’ve won a football game, in fairly dramatic circumstances, just an ounce of emotion would be nice… Sounds gone to me.

@romysdad: Turns out we have a manager who listens to supporters/players. No doubt that will be an issue for some though #pufc
