Derby County make a ‘formal approach’ for John Eustace as a report details his apparent ‘fall out’ with the Blackburn board.
On Saturday, John Percy said: “Excl: #dcfc are targeting John Eustace as new manager after the sacking of Paul Warne. Blackburn are expecting an official approach for Eustace, a former Derby midfielder. Also in this: analysis on Warne sacking & why Derby were left with no option.”
@RobDorsettSky tweeted on Sunday morning: “#dcfc have made a formal approach to #brfc for manager John Eustace. Derby mindful of Rovers’ FA Cup game v #wwfc this lunchtime but negotiations expected to accelerate after full time. Seems bizarre, with Rovers 6th and Derby in relegation places, but Derby have ambitious plans. #dcfc have two other candidates under consideration alongside Eustace, I’m told.”
BBC Derby Sport’s Dominic Dietrich said: “Understand reports around an approach for Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace are correct. Would be a real coup if they can get a deal sorted whether that’s before Tuesday night or not will be the question. Will have to move quickly after their game today if so. #DCFC”
Several fans heard an update about John Eustace, with @johnrobinson07 saying: “TalkSPORT reporting JE has had a falling out with Rovers board regarding January transfer business and the direction of the club. They are saying Derby will pay the 750k as JE is their number 1 target and Sky Bet and others have closed the betting on him taking job.”
@JoshBoswell wrote: “TalkSport are saying Derby will pay the 750K compensation and Eustace will leave “because of a disconnect on progression with the club and owners”. Told you. Enjoy, VenkyLovers.”
John Eustace is taking training at Blackburn this morning before meeting with CEO Steve Waggot and a Venkys representative to discuss the approach from Derby County 🗣️

Quotes from John Eustace before the Wolves game: “My focus has been on preparing the team for this, I love working with hard-working group who have created a real togetherness, no-one has spoken to me about any approach, I’m under contract at this football club”
Lancashire Telegraph say that “Eustace has 18 months remaining on his contract at Blackburn and Derby would be required a compensation figure to bring him in. Their finances continue to be monitored after almost going to the wall and so that will be a key factor.
“It will also be interesting to see how Eustace responds to questions on his future. The head coach has batted away suggestions he could depart previously. The links, this time, are far stronger.
“Eustace’s family remain in the Midlands. There is also an emotional tie to Derby, having been a fans’ favourite during his playing days.
“It’s understood that the head coach was left frustrated throughout the summer and January transfer window. It took Rovers until deadline day to deliver the attacking reinforcements they so clearly needed, prior to injuries setting in. The jury is still out as to whether the board delivered what is required to keep the team in the top-six.
“Rovers’ board will be aware of how badly it would reflect if Eustace was to move. They will dig their heels in and ensure the club receives full compensation if they can’t prevent him from leaving.”

This is what fans are saying as Derby make an approach for John Eustace as a report details his ‘fall out’ with the Blackburn board…
@Davetds258: Why would John Eustace leave a team that are pushing for the play off to go manage a team in a relegation battle
@NerjaRams: He’d be crazy to come to us. Fight for playoffs or a relegation battle… He’s doing well there
@Davidpritch_gg: I’d be happy with that respected & fondly remembered ex Derby player & has proven himself at this level with both Birmingham & Blackburn, would be a popular appointment I feel. #dcfc #dcfcfans #derby #derbycounty #therams
@CampervanJohn: Big result for Derby to get him from a promotion play off chasing team. Let’s hope we can!
@CatherinePayn14: All eyes on the Blackburn game later to see whose in their dugout 👀 👀. I think our entire fan base would be happy to see JE in our dugout. Keep us informed, Dom 🐏🐑🤍🖤
@RohanQuinn: Have to blame each and every person who still believes Venkys are good owners. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, keeping the lights on is their bare minimum obligation as owners of a football club. #Rovers
@Reece_Cronshaw: Another reminder as to why the Venkys are the worst owners in the whole 92.
@_Aaron_Holt_01: Feel that’s gonna turn the fan base for the game massively; none of it will be directed at JE but towards those in power if this is true
@liss_russ: If he is the decent guy he has come across to be so far he will be up front and honest for the fans about this post match. If he wants to go, do it quickly for all involved. Shows where the problem is (ie owners) if he does leave after TM, JDT and now possibly JE
@BradleyStirton: This will damage the team, though. He came in and galvanised this squad. Now, he’s apparently ready to abandon them for Derby County. Hopefully, he’s going to tell them the truth because we know the fans won’t get it.
@DinsdaleGlen: The fact Derby have contacted Rovers means they have had encouragement from Eustaces representatives! Waggot and Venkys can literally do nothing right. #Rovers
@Joelbirmz12: John eustace serious coup for Derby
@fergsim: If Clowes pulls this off it will be a master stroke. Will reunite fans and the siege mentality of admin season would be back. Not to mention, he keeps us up and we can really kick on next year. Pride Park will be rocking on Tuesday if JE is in charge. #dcfc
@Tonytheram16: David Clowes has gone full terminator mode…Sacks Paul Warne as he’s getting on the team bus and now makes a formal approach for a manager on their FA Cup matchday 😳 #dcfc
@ChrisBRFC91: Surely not 😅 this could arguably be one of the most embarrassing things to happen under the Venky ownership if this happens
@scottmason256: If he does go, what standard of manager are we going to be able to attract, with the candidates knowing we are so lacking ambition that our last manager left us in the playoffs to join a relegation battle? #rovers
Bring him home #dcfc https://t.co/p5ehWRsoWJ pic.twitter.com/al57FGrj2Y
