Newcastle fans raise dangerous ‘crush’ issues when experience trying to enter Birmingham’s St Andrew’s before the FA Cup tie.
Newcastle United Supporters Trust (@nufctrust): “Club are well aware of the issues accessing the away end tonight.
“Credit to Matt Willis outside updating supporters and assisting disabled supporters through the chaos.”
They added: “NUST are aware & have spoken to NUFC club staff at St Andrews about the dangerous issues affecting our supporters trying to enter the ground today.
“We ask that any members affected email board@nufctrust.co.uk with their experience. We will continue to raise with the club after today’s match.”
“If you were caught up in the huge queues and chaos last night, we would encourage you to email supporter.services@nufc.co.uk with your witness account. Please include any photos/videos too.
“Our SLO will be preparing a report to give feedback on last night.”
@gallowgateSJP: West Midlands Police are a disgrace really dangerous getting into St Andrews stadium this evening, missed the first 8 minutes of the match!
@m3gamarvatron: Had a mint time for the first 15 minutes of the game. No real answers from the police or stewards why we’re held back. Then when they let people through the coppers grabbed a lad and flattened an old bloke. Shambles.

@soph_atkk: we got in before this but our other mates were stuck in this and it was a pisstake. see also: both sets of fans being funnelled into the same area by police at full time, famously a fantastic idea that always ends well
@steve_binks: Good, it was really shocking tonight. Surprised someone wasn’t hurt
@kierrannn_: Absolute mess , not be back there in a hurry
@samanthatoonfan: Accident waiting to happen, no lights either outside
@stulewis03: Absolutely awful from @BCFC, my kids were crushed and I was told queue or don’t get in complete disgrace of a club absolute tin pot that could have been a disaster and police and stewards didn’t care at all #NUFC
@83Colly: Nothing much more to say other than 4 people doing pat down searches for 5000+ is ridiculous. Got there 40 minutes before kickoff and spent 25 minutes in the “pen”.
@fez_1892: It was a fkn joke
@NatashaNUFC: 20 minutes held up outside the ground on the bus by police and 20 minutes to get a half-time pint by the looks of it. I fucking hate Birmingham
@_samnic_: Should never have had 6000 fans going through one entrance, no idea why they couldn’t open up the entrance up the other end
@DavidHeron17: Carnage. Tbf there was no control, 2 police officers were over powered and then it just went a bit mental
@jarvitheman: This was an absolute joke. 3 turnstiles on and ended up being close to crushed by people arriving behind you. What a welcome to St Andrews. To top it off they sold shit loads of beers that never were delivered. Mugged away fans off well and truly
@jak19178: Always the same when we visit these lower league clubs. Sheff Wed was bad as well. Not used to big away crowds and haven’t got a clue how to handle them. Sunderland being the exception. They really rolled out the red carpet and gave us a first class welcome.

Joe Willock scored twice – including a controversial first goal – with a 21st-minute strike adjudged to be over the line by which assistant referee Nigel Lugg, cancelling out Ethan Laird’s 40-second opener for the hosts.
Willock then grabbed an 82nd-minute winner to end the League One leaders’ hopes of any shock upset.
Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock speaking on BBC One: “I was just trying to give my best. It has not been an easy season for me, I’ve been waiting for my chance to push on and hopefully this is the start of the rest of my season.
“It’s very exciting times. It’s not an easy place to come to, we want to thank the fans. Hopefully we can go one better this time in the Carabao Cup [final] and far in this competition.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC One: “It was a tough game for us. Mentally, physically – you could see a few players were on the edge today. We’re delighted to get through.
“I thought it was going to be a difficult night before the game. [The early goal] made it doubly difficult because the atmosphere in the stadium totally changed. We managed to get a foothold and did really well. At half-time it was about staying calm. I thought we did that a lot better in the second half.”
On injuries: “In the last couple of weeks we seem to have picked up a couple. It would be the last thing [we need] to derail us. We have such a small squad. Last season we had big numbers of players out and it disrupted us in the middle of the season.
“We were forced to take Dan Burn off. It was something with his groin. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, speaking to BBC One: “We didn’t give ourselves the best start. It was an easy goal to concede and we gave ourselves an uphill battle. It woke us up a little bit. We had to get going and show our qualities.”
On his fitness: “I’ve worked hard to get myself in a position to start games again. I didn’t want to come back too soon. I’m just going to try and get as many games between now and the end of the season. It’s been frustrating to say the least, but hopefully I’m on the other side of it now.”
On Joe Willock: “I’m delighted for Joe. He’s a big character in the dressing room. We all support him and are standing by him. He’s taken his opportunity today.”
