Derby fans slam their side’s ‘utterly shocking’ performance after Carabao Cup defeat to Barrow

Derby County fans slam their side’s ‘utterly shocking’ performance after a Carabao Cup Second Round defeat to Barrow.

The League Two side reach the third round of EFL Cup for first time since 1967-68, taking Derby all the way to penalties, and won 3-2 after a goalless draw in the 90 minutes of normal time played.

Goalkeeper Paul Farman was the hero, with James Collins and Kayden Jackson all missing their penalties for the Championship outfit, before Farman saved from Craig Forsyth to cause an upset at Holker Street.

While it was delight for Barrow following Saturday’s 4-0 league victory over Port Vale, it’s more frustration for Derby and the wait goes on for their first away win of the season.

Barrow 0-0 Derby: Collins – (Penalty missed)
Barrow 1-0 Derby: Jackson – (Penalty scored)
Barrow 1-1 Derby: Mendez-Laing – (Penalty scored)
Barrow 2-1 Derby: Gotts – (Penalty scored)
Barrow 2-2 Derby: Brown (Penalty scored)
Barrow 3-2 Derby: Worrall (Penalty scored)
Barrow 3-2 Derby: Jackson (Penalty missed)
Barrow 3-2 Derby: Spence (Penalty missed)
Barrow 3-2 Derby: Forsyth (Penalty missed)

Derby boss Paul Warne on defeat in the Carabao Cup: My thoughts are mixed. I didn’t think we had any threat in the first half. We had a gilt-edge chance with Tom Barkhuizen, I was waiting for the net to rip. But apart from that, we didn’t create enough and it was a typical cup game.

It’s easy for me to criticise our team, but you’ve got to respect what the opposition have done, too. They make it difficult for you. Barrow in good form on the back of a 4-0 win at the weekend against Port Vale. We knew it was going to be tough. We prepared well and we gave a few players on the periphery some minutes. It was nice to have Joe Ward back, but obviously we had to take him off. Kenzo Goudmijn took a hit early on, so he had to come off. Liam Thompson also had a bit of a calf issue, so we had to change the pack quite a lot.

But all that aside, I thought in the second half we were a lot better, and created some good chances. However, our final ball probably let us down.

We were just that far off here, that far off there. If you’re going to win a game, those crucial moments in the final third have to stick. We probably didn’t do enough to win it and we probably didn’t do enough to lose it. It was probably a fair result. Unfortunately, our main penalty taker in James Collins missed the first penalty and that might have summed us up. There was plenty of endeavour, but there wasn’t enough quality in our play.

On Tawanda Chiwera’s Derby County debut: We knew that we couldn’t play him for any more than 50 or 60 minutes tops, so that was always going to be a substitution I was going to make. He played as a narrow seven, which isn’t his role, but we just wanted to give him some time within the team and get some match minutes. We brought him in because I think he can handle the ball, and he can drift past people. There’s loads more to his game that we’ve got to help him with as well. He’s going to be a good addition to our midfield. For him to play 45 minutes tonight, and Wardy to play too, is probably the highlight for us.

On wanting a positive result against Bristol City on Saturday ahead of the international break: No-one wants to come out of cup competitions. We want to win every game we play and could have had a good draw in the next round. Winning is a habit, so you want to get into that winning habit. We will play against a very good Bristol City side on Saturday.

We’re going to have to pick the lads up again after this. I’m not saying you can forget about this if we win on Saturday because defeats suck. However, we won’t be the only team to have lost tonight in the cup. There’ll be loads of crazy results knocking about and that’s what the cup is and that’s why everyone gets excited by it. In fairness, they hit the crossbar and we hit the post. There was a lot going on in the game all night – we won’t beat ourselves up about it.

Barrow’s Stephen Clemence said: ā€œThe owners would probably say they would like one of the big boys away to help the football club.

ā€œOf course it would be nice to take on one of the big boys, maybe at Tottenham. I wouldn’t mind going back there.

ā€I said when I went into the huddle I was proud of their performance. And the result didn’t really matter to me then.

ā€œAll I asked whoever was to step up was to pick their spot, stay calm and go for it. If they missed, so what? They had the courage to step up in the first place.ā€

As mentioned, Derby fans slam their side’s ‘utterly shocking’ performance after Carabao Cup defeat to Barrow…

@SamA_R_D: We just got promoted from league 1 we don’t need a few new faces to beat a league 2 team. This is on the manager and the players

@mrsamjones88: Never wanted rid of a manager ever as much as I do Warne

@cspaceram: Brutal viewing. Shame we didn’t see the new lad with someone to pass to. Feel for the #dcfcfans who made the trip. Massive few days now in window and then Bristol Saturday. 😬 #dcfc

@Gav1981: Warne saying we need new faces to freshener up the team… surely whatever team we put out should be capable of performing better than that against a league 2 side!!!! #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Derbydan84:
We need to start chanting again
ā€œPaul Warne your football is shitā€
Loud so the message is heard. We can’t be back in L1 next season.
#dcfc #dcfcfans

@Reecedcfc: Embarrassing performance warne out

@EdgeeJ0e: No desire, no quality in the final third, we looked like we weren’t trying to win the game. Couldn’t care less about the penalties that was a spineless performance, fans deserve a refund. #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Derbydan84: Embarrassing. Get PW out of this club.

@Rammie24: Paul Warne as got to be sacked before it’s to late he’s clueless !!

@Sdcfc12: Don’t want to hear it – an utterly shocking performance

@scrooks23: Very poor performance & I understand & agree with all the frustration from the fans However if the Clowes sacks Warne (which he won’t), who else will you get in to manage DCFC with a transfer budget of Ā£0 that will do any better? Gonna be a long & painful season all!

@HMA6213: Convinced I was watching a different game to him he’s acting like we played well 🤔

@PhilipNeale4: Was he watching the same game as the rest of us?

@RamInSweden: He said Barrow made it hard for us. No they didn’t, they didn’t do anything special whatsoever, they just played standard balanced football. We made it hard for ourselves, the players were dreadful.

@harrisondcfc: This is a low even for Derby

@samueldcfc: how shit are we

@_neil95: What the fuck is he talking about seriously

@_joewest2005_: Same old shit, get gone you muppet

@Krs0774: We were playing a league 2 side and we offered nothing. This is not about the issues with lack of investment and incoming players. We should have enough in what we have to beat Barrow.

@garrymoore2: 2 attempts on target in 80 mins against a league 2 team. Struggling to find a defence of this sort of performance. Tough watch!! šŸ #dcfcfans

@EmmaW1977: This is just dreadful……… I’ve had more fun at the dentist! Absolute top praise to all the fans who’ve travelled for this! #dcfcfans

@joerussell90: Paul Warne football is just the fucking worst #dcfc #dcfcfans

@JosephAMilez: Warne ball is probably the most boring football I have ever seen at Derby County. #dcfc #dcfcfans

@QuadrupleDaddio: Derby missing 3 penalties is nothing but a disgrace #dcfc #dcfcfans

@dan_dcfc: Jesus Christ I feel sorry for the group going all that way tonight. What a fucking embarrassment that is 🤣 #dcfc #dcfcfans

@jodgeysimmo07: Get Warne out. Drains the fucking life out of me and the fact we played like we were the league 2 side gives you all you need to know. It’s the Players fault for the penalties but the fact that we have ā€œhung onā€ to play penalties. Nice one #dcfc #dcfcfans

@dan_WilkinsonF1: No interest at all in the Warne waffle after this, its piss poor negative crap and needs changing, only 1 player could play a foward pass tonight and that was Ozoh! #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Cookie_5298: GET WARNE GONE. #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Derby_Dazzler: Genuinely embarrassing all night long. Feel for the #dcfcfans making that journey. Some good banter to come from PW?

@RamsHead123: Look for a replacement before it starts to get toxic, it’s not far away. Can’t remember the last time I came away from a game happy with the performance. Mind numbing is a understatement #dcfc #dcfcfans
