Derby County boss Paul Warne say he was left ’embarrassed’ after watching his side lose 4-0 to Chesterfield in a pre-season friendly.
The Rams were thrashed in their first friendly back in England after spending the last week doing some warm-weather training camp out in Spain.
However Derby fans watching on in the away end were disappointed to see first half goals from Ollie Banks and Will Grigg, followed by a double from James Berry late on see Chesterfield come out of it with a surprise big win.
We also saw one clip on Twitter do the rounds, showing one of the goals scored by the Spireites, take a look for yourself below…

Paul Warne said when he spoke to the club’s media post-match: Collectively we weren’t good enough, and this will be a good shock for the players. I think if they thought we could just turn up in the Championship because we deserve to be there and it will all be a merry party with ticker tape and kisses out to everyone – we’ve proven tonight that there’s a lot to do. We knew that anyway and I know it’s a pre-season game so I’m not going to get too emotional about it but fundamentally we were out-run and out-fought and we got punished.
We had moments in the game where we were quite good, but we’ve managed to defend our own shots. We could have had three goals in the first 20 minutes.
There was some disappointment in it, but there was some very good play. The starting eleven aren’t playing together, so there’s bits and bobs all over the place and I understand that. However, we need to see an improvement on Saturday at Shrewsbury because that isn’t the standard that anyone wants associated with our club.
On getting a reality check ahead of the season…
You don’t want them, especially not in front of people, because it is an embarrassing scoreline; you don’t want to lose 4-0 in a pre-season game. However, I don’t want to get too bogged down in the scoreline. I didn’t think we did enough in the second half, every time we got the ball into the final third we didn’t pick the right pass.
There was a real threat to our play at times but there wasn’t enough pace in our play. I worried before the game if we had turned up with the right mindset; I know it’s a pre-season game I understand that. It was fully deserved for Chesterfield, they took their chances really well, and I’m not knocking their part in the game.
I just think that we didn’t play anywhere near the level we should expect. Fundamentally when people turn up, when you’re trying to win for your place in the team, you have to be on tilt. We just didn’t have enough players playing on tilt.
On encouraging signs
There was a bit of pace and power to our first half display, I thought Kayden Jackson looked a threat in behind all the time. I thought, at times, we created good opportunities with both wing-backs having a real energy, although they are probably only 75% fit. They put some decent balls into the box, although I don’t think we flooded the box enough for my liking.
David Ozoh came on in the second half and looked a lot more composed. How we played in the midfield in the first half isn’t how we are going to play, but it’s about getting minutes into their legs.

Chesterfield’s Danny Webb said, per the club’s website:
“Just like when we lost the other two games, we won’t be getting carried away with tonight’s win either, although we are obviously very happy with the result.
“First and foremost, I thought the performance was impressive and we played some lovely stuff at times.
“We battled hard and played good stuff too, it was a great watch for most of the game.
“I was really impressed with the lads.”
On Will Grigg:
“It was great for him to get a goal.
“No striker wants to go pre-season without scoring, you always want to try and get one so that was great.
“I thought he was excellent tonight.
“Someone of his calibre always wants to get a goal and he got that tonight.
“That’s just one of the positives, there’s lots of them.”
This is what Twitter users are saying with Derby boss Paul Warne left ’embarrassed’ after watching his side lose 4-0 to Chesterfield…
@KenzoMerchant: Is it just me that agrees with this man all the time
@KylanGutteridge: at least he knows it was shit
@2021Wazza: He does not look happy. We all know we need at least 4 or 5 players more. Chesterfield wanted that more than us tonight. That was the biggest worry
@JakeBarker1212: Unlucky lads, could’ve gone either way
@_alfie_matthews: Thanks for coming x
@ForestNotSoMag: That’s the derby county I love 😍
@mztty: I’m feeling confident for the Shrewsbury game. I’m saying 4-1 Shrewsbury
@RichardOli27024:
Yep, agree with Warne on last nights performance.
Looked 2nd best and leggy , strange after the training camp in Spain.
Too many “easy balls” played sideways & backwards.
Nothing up top to threaten their keeper.
Hopefully, move 3 or 4 players on and bring in better replacements.
@cspaceram: That ended up being embarrassing but it was basically a training game. Kenzo is class, Kayden is sharp but not a CF, CBT looked ok, Ozoh is massive, generally #dcfc were super sloppy, trial goalie is toast. More attacking options needed. Forget and move on. #dcfcfans
@Derby_Dazzler: Don’t think we will be seeing this goalkeeper again #dcfcfans 🫣
@Ada30186: Great honest interview as always. It’s not just putting on a shirt, players, it’s a Derby County shirt @dcfcofficial
@ytfcaj00: Let’s be real here Luthra is not a championship goalkeeper. He is League 2 at best
@AndyMargett: The amount of free kicks we have given away in this friendly is crazy. We look way off it – couple of weeks to go… still need a few more bodies in. #dcfc #dcfcfans
@SloperBlues: Where everyone saying luthra was good and wasn’t given a fair chance now? Yikes 😂😂
@Danielprice92: Rohan luthra. Looks like a good move to let him go at Cardiff. Can’t see him playing in the football league anytime soon. Nice guy not a great showing as a football player.
@dcfcdyl13: What tf was he doing 😭
@dan_WilkinsonF1: Can’t defend, can’t score and being torn apart by Chesterfield, not great is it
@NathanJordan85: The fuck 😂
Ebou reminding us all why we love him so much 🤣🐏 #dcfc pic.twitter.com/VzrQvlMIHP
