Callum O’Hare causes a stir with comments on time at Coventry City and looking forward to playing for his new club Sheffield United.
He spoke with BBC Sheffield’s Football Heaven on the night of Sheffield United’s 4-1 pre-season friendly victory over Harrogate Town in midweek.
The 26 year old forward described life outside of the game, and settling in at Sheffield United, with new and old team mates.
But it seems a few things he said led to quite the reaction on Twitter, with his interview going viral very quickly…
🗣️ “I just can’t switch off. I’m always thinking about Football.”

Callum O’Hare: “…manager had the trust in me. I know there was a lot of teams that were interested in me, but for me it’s just about playing football and being able to show what I can do. So I feel like after the last couple of years that I’ve had, being able to do that and showing everyone what I can do is what I want to do this year. And that’s the main reason why I came here, to get a chance to play all the time and, yeah, that’s what I love doing the most. That’s what footballers do, want to play football.
Interviewer: “And what is it about the last couple of years, then? Because obviously injury unfortunately took you out for a while, but what is the motivation then? What extra in that last of years then serves as the motivation also?”
Callum O’Hare: “I got injured and then I came back and I was flying and then things happened and I took out the team. So it was just frustrating. One, and, yeah, I just want to be playing football. So for me, the motivation is just to get on the pitch and excite the fans and win football games, and that’s what I’m here to do.”
Interviewer: “When Chris Wilder was sort of selling you, not just perhaps the ambition and the dream, how much about how he wants the team to be deployed was actually a key for you in playing in that number ten role?”
Callum O’Hare: “Yeah, everything. Obviously, the way you explained it, it seemed familiar to me, so I felt like I could come in and just flourish here. Obviously, I know a few of the players already, which helped too. They know my game, as you can see, today, Sam played me, I scored. So, yeah, we’ve already got connections. So, yeah, everything just fitted nicely. So I thought, at this time, its the right thing to do.”
Interviewer: “Does that happen much, then? So if you know somebody from a previous club or a club you’re at, you give them a ring just to find out what the real lie of the land is.
Callum O’Hare: “They were ringing me, ringing me, saying, Cal come. And I was just asking them what it’s like and stuff and, yeah, they were just saying everything, what the manager was saying. So, yeah, obviously I’m here now, so I just can’t wait for the season to start and get going.”
As mentioned, Callum O’Hare causes a stir with comments on time at Coventry and looking forward to playing for fellow Championship club Sheffield United…
@BadBoyOfBowls: Disappointed here with these comments. You were injured and we stood by you, you came back and the attitude seems to be ‘all about me’ … @Coventry_City is bigger than any one player and ways will be #PUSB
@skybluetal: Taken out of the team because he wasn’t playing well enough to stay in it
@covjim: He was out the team cos he plays when he wants… no player has a divine right to play..
@adam_liddell: He got took out because he wasn’t playing well enough and he had a year out. Palmer was playing better, then wouldn’t sign a contract. When he came back fans were so happy until it was clear he wasn’t stopping and the effort stopped, then fans lost interest
@dharvey4: He left us for the money, not much in it from a squad point of view. Wouldn’t surprise me, if we meet in the playoffs next season.
@stevecarpo: Poor form Callum lad. Absolutely no need to have a dig at the club and gaffer who played a key role in your development as a player, and who went above and beyond to support you during rehab.
@StevefromCov87:
What happend was when he came.back from a year off sick, he wrote a number on a piece of paper and passed it to Robins.
The number was so high, Robins thought it was his agent’s phone number!
We said no, so he downed tools. As evidenced by his awful penalty at Wembley.
@barnsey__15: ‘Taken out of the team’ thats because if you weren’t going to commit your future to the club (after they rehabilitated you for over a year through multiple injuries) then obviously they’re going to try and play/plan for the future without you
@SkyBlueCrampy: Took out the team because maybe you were having a negative impact on others…. Or you simply weren’t performing for the team that supported you through your injury… Or you simply thought you were bigger than the club? Either way, it’s poor form slating a club that stood by you
@Twitworth1977: Was a very good player for Cov, but when you don’t commit to the club contractually, then how can you then be surprised at not being played every week??? He knows that full well, so with comments like that he is being disingenuous
@graham_ccfc: “Taken out the team” as he was running down his contract for the big move he embarrassingly never got🤣. Also forgetting the club looked after him during his 2 season ending injuries in the last 3 years (last of which occurred at Brammall Lane). Good riddance. #PUSB
@Andrueiei: Motivation is money not football cal
@StuartTaitt: “I was flying and took out the team”. Yeah why was that huh 🙄
@skybluerosie70:
Motivation is money 💰
He has trebled his money for a sideway move
Clear as day
@Mattccfc33: We have super Jack rudoni so it’s all good 👍
@skybluetom87: Its actually quite sad how sour this whole thing has ended. I include Cov in that, given we released a fairly salty statement referencing his injury record when he left. Geezer was unbelievable for us. People forget he never missed a game at all for years before that first injury
@toughy92: He got taken out of the team because for large spells he wasn’t good enough. The end of last season he was atrocious. Ego on this lad after scoring a flurry of goals after a year out is insane 😂 you can tell he honestly thought the PL was coming knocking 🤣 #PUSB
@davidpercival42: Callum you was took out the team cus you’d already made your mind up you was going and we had to find a play of playing post o’hare .Things happened my arse .you was worshipped at city dont ruin that .
@skybluelouis_: Probably because we play players that want to be part of the clubs future cal 👍🏻 #PUSB
@__sampatterson: Maybe you would’ve played more if you’d not just performed well when the TV cameras were around?
@ChrisDennis5: Just be honest and say you moved for the money, Callum 😂😂 Ridiculous.
@PuneetVatish: Wow! What a comment “got took out of the team”. No need for that. So basically he threw a tantrum and left 😂😂. That’s well funny. He came back for a few games and was outstanding, then threw a barney and went for the money. Funny when Hamer leaves 😂😃
@bcfcm22: Don’t even feel a particular way about cov but this guy is a scumbag, giving it the biggun throwing shade at the club who gave him a shot at pro ball (he’s not that great anyway) Plus that fake accent is shite
@Joeytaylor123: “Things happen I was taken out the team”, you ran your contract down pal after the club looking after injured you for 18 months. Let’s not play victim here.. 😂
@wozey: He offered nothing at the end of the season and I’m being kind by saying that was probably because he was looking after himself for his future move, some believe it’s because he’s not good enough. You can decide on that if he doesn’t end up in the gym rehabilitating on the sick
@cleedham_: I like O’hare, obviously. But you can’t be saying “I was taken out of the team” as if that was all the clubs fault. Made it clear he wasn’t signing a new deal hence he was benched for the last few games of the season, rather give the minutes to someone who wants to play. #PUSB
@ashleymonk1986: What ever cov fan welcomes this prick back without a boo when he touches the ball is a nonce, Basically just talked cov down saying we didn’t give him enough football fuck off prick!!!
If you fancy a fun 10 mins then read the QT’s from salty Cov fans!!
Welcome to the Blades Cal, you’ll fit in just fine!!👌🏻⚔️😂 https://t.co/UTtqTnZc0b pic.twitter.com/p3qB0y8l6S
