Dean Smith gives response to angry chants and boos from Norwich fans after Blackburn defeat

Dean Smith gives his response to angry chants and boos from Norwich City fans after suffering a dismal defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

The under-fire Canaries boss said that sections of the Carrow Road crowd were “waiting” for their side to struggle following their loss at home by Jon Dahl Tomasson’ side, who are potentially Championship promotion contenders.

After a Tyrhys Dolan goal and Ben Gibson’s own goal, Norwich suffered their fourth loss at home in seven games, leaving them 5th in the table with 35 points from 23 games, whilst Rovers are in 3rd with 39 points from 23 played.

Dean Smith said, via Sky Sports: “I understand frustration and disappointment, but leave it until the end of the game, because otherwise it will just play havoc on players’ minds as well.

“There’s a lot of players out there that have won the title twice for this club and they probably don’t deserve some of the stick they got at times today. I’ve always said, after the game, you channel your frustrations and we have to accept that.”

There was a lot of home supporters heard singing “we want Deano out” and “Dean Smith, your football is s***”.

He said on those calling for him to leave or get sacked, as per Birmingham Live: “I think a lot of them have been waiting for this period to happen, or wanting it to – I don’t know.

“A narrative’s been set about it not being good football, despite us having the second or third highest shots in the league.

“Football’s about opinions and sometimes you can’t change that. Fortunately our next game’s away from home because you feel like we have to score two very quick goals at home to get people on our side at the moment.

“I’ve been in football long enough to know you can turn things around and we’ll be working hard to do that.

He added: “This is the madness of it; we win today and we go third. But it doesn’t matter at the moment because people’s mindset is there and they’re entitled to their opinions.”

“Disappointing. Frustrating,” Smith added after the game.

“We give two really poor goals away and didn’t create the bigger chances that we should have.”

“They’re (the players) very disappointed. Nobody wants to hear the chants that were out there but it’s something that you have to deal with in football. Football has always been about opinions, and always will be.

“Everybody’s opinion is different but the biggest thing today is the players worked their socks off. I can’t question their attitude and how they approached the game. Young Liam Gibbs came on early in the second half and I thought he was outstanding. The players haven’t given up by any means and we just need to have that killer instinct to go and win football games.”

“We have to regroup. I’ve just said that to the players in the dressing room,” Smith added.

“They know how to win games, they know how to get out of this league. I do as well. Unfortunately, at the moment, things have gone against us, certainly at Carrow Road. On the road, we seem to be a lot more solid. I think we played some good football at times today but didn’t make the most of our chances when they came around.”

Blackburn Rovers boss Jan Dahl Tomasson told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“A fantastic day, a great result and a brilliant performance. We asked for a reaction from the players after last week, when we underperformed, and we got one.

“We were on the front foot immediately, pressing our opponents. We were intense and used a lot of energy. We got their fans against them.

“We made six changes. The players that came in were ready. It’s a young, inexperienced squad, but they did a great job.

“The last pass was not always perfect but keeping a clean sheet was great. We defended well against a Premier League side.”

Here’s how social media users reacted as Dean Smith gives a response to angry chants and boos from Norwich fans after the Blackburn defeat…

@sjlcanary: Has he been sacked yet ? #SmithOut #ncfc

@adam_harv19:
🔰 #NCFC’s Championship home record in recent seasons 👇🏻
18/19 – 4️⃣ defeats in 2️⃣3️⃣ games
20/21 – 3️⃣ defeats in 2️⃣3️⃣ games
22/23 – 4️⃣ defeats in 1️⃣2️⃣ games
An alarming statistic when Dean Smith has gone on record about making Carrow Road a fortress.

@tommykerrison: Not surprised he’s still there didn’t expect anything to happen last night or this morning (I don’t in general) but they would have to wait include the American investors to be in the meeting & with time differences makes that hard I guess. (Clutching at anything) #ncfc

@_paulharrison: Sadly mr smith shots on goal is not the same as shots going in the goal!! You can give us all the stats in the world to make it look good but it’s far from good it’s shocking ! we the fans pay a lot of money and to watch that is a disgrace !

@Nodge_City: Paddy “The Baddy” Davitt asking the questions like a pro. Well played, the phrasing was perfect 👍

@jonnymiller88: Possession! How many touches did Hanley, Gibson and Gunn have in the first half! That’s why the possession is so high. Hiding behind stats I’m afraid, there’s a reason why CR isn’t full and singing

@howiec76: My god even his interviews bore me 😣

@leoringer: Dean Smith has lost the plot at Norwich. When your primary explanation for yet another poor performance is that the fans were booing, you’ve demonstrated you’re out of ideas and unable to take responsibility. Hard to think a new manager could get much less out of this squad.

@howardwing63: Somebody tell me where this league for shots on goal is. Perhaps we can win that if it exists and get promotion

@Writer_Bear: Wow! I didn’t realise we were in the top two for shots on goal! When’s the open top bus parade? He doesn’t help himself does he! #deansmithout

@JHoneybone44: You’ve had 6 weeks away from matches because of the World Cup and you’ve not improved or changed anything, for me he has to go, continues to play Sargent on the wing. When will he learn Sarge is better up top.

@Owen_Page9: Dear Dean, when we started the season, people sat back against us early, allowing us the ball, and mostly desperate shots were taken. Now, people have realised we’re shite, score early, sit back and allow us possession, and mostly desperate shots were taken. #ncfc

@ExSemt50: The players aren’t getting stick because we know they can play. The chants were for you, you made them play this nonsensical style if you can call it style . Wow Mr Smith, dig the hole bigger for yourself, responsibility is yours. Own it !

@sharonmbowles: “Narrative” = “Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me” 😂

@LukeOfNorfolk:
“I can’t change that”
You literally can.
Ta ra

@NeilHall: You set the narrative, not us.

@pauloh2002: Blackburn had 12 less shots, nearly as many on target, 20% less possession and walked away 2-0 winners, how do we walk away happy because we’ve won on ‘stats’

@nath_english: The narrative is set by the team’s performances. We must change manager now, to have any chance of promotion this season.
