Dean Smith criticises decision not to send off Bruno Guimaraes over “dangerous lunge”

Dean Smith criticises the decision not to send off Bruno Guimaraes over his “dangerous lunge” in Newcastle’s draw over Leicester.

The game could have been very different if Bruno Guimaraes received a yellow card for what Dean Smith called a “dangerous leap”.

City’s defence was strong, and they kept their first Premier League Clean Sheet in over six months. However, the team could not get the three points needed to lift them out of relegation.

Some thought Newcastle should have been reduced to 10 men. Guimaraes lost the ball when he went in for a tackle with Soumare and planted his studs onto the Soumare’s knee.

Referee Andre Marriner penalised the tackle and showed Guimaraes a yellow card, with VAR officials not deeming it worthy of an upgrade to a red.

Smith said, as per Leicester Mercury: “It could have been a very different game. I do feel that Bruno could have been sent off.

“I don’t think anybody would have had any complaints if the colour of the card was red rather than yellow. I’m pretty certain it wouldn’t have been overturned as well.

“It was a dangerous lunge that endangered the opponent. I don’t think the referee felt there was enough force for a red card. It could have been a very different game.”

Asked if he had received an explanation for the lack of VAR intervention, Smith said: “Maybe we’ll get the comms from Howard Webb in the next few days on a show or something.”

John Cross of the Mirror says Bruno Guimarães was lucky to stay on.

He said to Sky Sports: I’m just amazed at that that challenge in the first half where he’s gone really studs up. I mean, he catches his opponent square on the thigh, doesn’t he? Really gets away with it. Just because I don’t think the foot is planted there. But I just can’t see how that’s not been overturned and he’s sent off. It defies belief at the moment.

“I just think Howard Webb has been really good. It’s early days for Howard Webb at the PGMOL, ahead of the referees, and I think he’s already making an impression, a positive one. But I think the first and foremost, which I think will only happen over the course of an entire season, will be to introduce some consistency and to kind of really get in the mindset of officials and indeed the VARs about what is expected of them, what constitutes a red card.

“And he shouldn’t have been on the pitch. It’s just no way about it. I think he’s been sent off early in the season, wouldn’t he? So I think it would have kind of been a four game ban as well. So it would have had serious implications for Newcastle, reduced them to ten men and given Leicester a greater chance. So you can’t say it wouldn’t have had a potentially huge impact at both ends of the table.”

This is what Twitter users said as Dean Smith criticises the decision not to send off Bruno Guimaraes over his “dangerous lunge”…

@lcfccyruss: 100% a red, but Bruno has done challenges like that all season, he’s been let off all season, so nothing was going to change against us

@jay95abbey: You can’t question the refs like that, ban him and fine him 100k immediately

@jlow88: 🧂 🧂 🧂 Heard VAR stopped Leicester having a shot or stringing a pass together for 93 minutes as well.

@charliebumps: VAR is causing more controversy than before. At least before you could put it down to a refs mistake. Now there are no excuses or reasonable explanations for week in week out awful VAR decisions or lack of intervention. Get rid.

@BirdsallAlex: Newcastle fan and hes lucky to be on the pitch there mind

@admdornan: If it was a red then Leicester may have had 25% of the possession.

@skmaw1: These sour lemons are talkin about Leicester as if a red for bruno saves them from relegation, but there’s every chance it would have helped Newcastle tbh because it would draw Leicester out and expose them.

@shamirmawji: If that’s a lcfc player it’s a red. Blatant red by the rules

@Andymb28: How ironic that Newcastle fan have banged on about “big 6 bias” and then get away with this 🤦‍♂️

@wonkeysmoker: 100% a red card, it was a ridiculous decision, more terrible refereeing and could have a direct impact on Leicester surviving, referring in England is at an all time low. 2 blatant red cards this weekend not given. player safety is clearly not a priority. @FA_PGMOL

@Paul_Coull87: Yellow suffice, pulled out of the challenge and barely any contact. Had he followed through it would have been. Glad to see the game not being reffed with still frames

@s13vyh: If that’s Casemiro there he’s off.

@jganderton27: heard this crying before ay lads

@soulie94: We literally could’ve been down to 9 men and Leicester weren’t gonna attack us tonight. Cry more

@AtTheBridgePod: Yes because we want Leicester to win and make the final day an exciting relegation battle 😂

@ryandavid97: As an #NUFC fan, yes. Very very poor challenge. Don’t know how he’s not off

@KianClarke19: I literally don’t understand the rules anymore

@goonerwager: It’s as clear as you will ever see. A rake is still a red. High and intent. VAR are corrupt

@Jeep_1970: VAR will have looked at the force used, there was minimal. He touches his thigh, nothing more. But that’s just my opinion, other fans who do not like where #NUFC have challenged the Greedy6 will no doubt suggest Bruno should be off, sent down for 5 years! Tell me ma me ma 🎶

@Todd_Swain: Poor challenge but it’s just never a red, there’s no force behind it, wouldn’t have took the skin off of rice pudding

@Nufc__Tom: Give over man 🤣 absolutely zero force in that.

@JamesNUFC92: Probably would have lost if he had got sent off, might have tried to score if they were playing against 10 men.
