Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell was left in tears at being sent off for a horror challenge on Fulham’s Tete in the Boxing Day clash.
Bobby de Cordova-Reid, Tim Ream and Aleksandar Mitrovic all found the net to give the Cottagers a comfortable win at Selhurst Park.
Fulham dominant throughout the Premier League game, and their job was made easier when Palace had two sending offs, putting an end to their hopes of a fourth straight home win.
Mitchell was handed a red for a foul on Kenny Tete which came three minutes after his side went 1-0 down, and James Tomkins followed him down the tunnel before the 60th minute.
The result is a big boost for the visitors as they make an unlikely push towards the European places, currently sitting in eighth, just two points off the top six.
30 minutes into the game, Palace almost took the lead after good play by Michael Olise set Jordan Ayew inside the area, only to smashed the ball against the bar.
The away side made them just after when De Cordova-Reid put his side in front as Mitrovic jumped on dismal play from Joachim Andersen only to then find his team-mate with a pinpoint cross.
Palace were made to feel more miserable after Mitchell was sent off after Tete reached a loose ball first and was caught by the Crystal Palace player.
Palace’s hopes were crushed even more 12 minutes into the second half when Tomkins, on a booking, was adjudged to have elbowed Mitrovic off the ball.
Ream was there to make it 2-0 from a corner with around 30 minutes left on the clock before added a third was scored on the 80th minute.
Referee Andy Madley was looking on the VAR monitor to see if there was any handball against the Serb, he however stayed with his original decision, before Mitro made it three 10 minutes from time.
Things go from bad to worse for Palace 😬

Palace captain Joachim Andersen: “It was a disappointing performance, losing 3-0 at home is never nice. We have a game soon so we have to get our heads up and win against Bournemouth. We need to forget this match, it’s finished.
“Even though we didn’t play well, I thought we were still in the game for a long time, but going 2-0 down made it difficult.
“We didn’t do some of the basics right, we didn’t compete in our duels. It’s nothing to do with the break. We need to see what went wrong, make an evaluation and see what we can do better.”
Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic: “We are back and this is the best possible way to start the season again. We played against a good side but we showed that we are the better team today.
“Of course, they had two red cards, but even before the first we dominated and scored the goal. The red card made it easy but we played really well all over the pitch.
“The way we finished the first half we tried to put more pressure on them. We had to manage their intensity, then the second goal made it even more easy. I’ll take one goal and two assists all day, but the most important thing was the three points.
“I really enjoyed it, even though I’m still having some trouble with my ankle. I’m still not fully fit but I’m getting there, and hopefully we can continue like this.”
Fulham defender Tim Ream speaking to Match of the Day: “The second goal was crucial, we needed to put the game away, and thankfully I was Johnny-on-the-spot.”
On his goal: “There was a bit of joking around [in the dressing room afterwards]. I’m not a striker but it was just instinct. I’m happy it went in and happy VAR didn’t rule it out.”
On team’s good form: “We’re not satisfied, we want to keep winning games and to move up the table. We have a good group that understands what it’s going to take, where we’ve fallen short in the past, and we’ll give it a real good go.”
Palace manager Patrick Vieira speaking to Match of the Day: “It was one of the worst days since I’ve been at the club, not just because we lost the game. It was the way we did it, without competing.
“They prepared their game really well and we weren’t brave enough to play forward.
“I believe we had the best chance before they scored their goal, but we didn’t do enough to deserve something from the game.
“We have to give them credit, analyse ourselves and try to bounce back as soon as possible.”
Here’s what fans said on Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell in tears at being sent off for a horror challenge on Fulham’s Tete…
@embleton_carly: You literally see that in every game and it seems like it’s only the bottom half teams who see red for it
@JBFC18: That is not a red
@Danny_CPFC: It was a red, end of!
@CPFCTuckey: THIS IS NOT A RED CARD… the reaction and nature of the challenge has influenced the decision, the officiating in this league is so bad and corrupt…
@reggie75nufc: Not a red, Leicester player on joelinton for pen is far worse he didn’t even get a card, both yellow card tackles
@JoshuaCPFC: Not sure how that’s a red? They both go for it in an identical way, just Mitchell was a bit late. A foul and maybe booking definitely but how is it a red?
@rossbart97: Mitchell has been shocking since his call up
@CPFC_Bobby: cGot the Mitchell red spot on, still undecided on JT’s second yellow. 2nd goal a matter of opinion.
@liamb0117: Really poor from Ty but how’s that a red? The Fulham lad’s shin is directly under where his foot SHOULD go down
@Matchday365CPFC: I don’t care how poor Tomkins and Mitchell were. Those were two of the softest sending offs I’ve seen. If the Fulham players didn’t fake injuries they’d both still be on the pitch. Embarrassing refereeing.
@CiaranCPFC: Cheers Mitchell hope we replace you in Jan 👍🏼
@CPFC703: Mitchell with a straight Red. We can’t pass the ball. We’re down a goal. Seems like the perfect time to turn it off and not ruin my holiday any further.
