Crystal Palace fans were in high spirits as they took to cheekily taunt Aston Villa with chants in the 3-0 thrashing on Sunday.
Oliver Glasner’s side secured their first Premier League win of the season, Jean-Philippe Mateta opening the scoring on the 21st-minute with a penalty after Daichi Kamada was fouled.
Captain Marc Guehi, who is linked with potentially joining Liverpool, doubled the lead with a stunning curled shot from the edge of the box.
Ismaila Sarr then sealed all three points with a 78th-minute header, meaning Palace climb to 8th in the Premier League table with five points, while Villa remain winless and sit second-bottom with one point and no goals scored.
As mentioned, there were a number of chants coming from the away end, taunting Villa and their fans…

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner speaking to Sky Sports: “Huge credit to the players. How they play today, the performance, there was some moments where we were under pressure and we had to suffer.
“One big chance in the first half and this is the quality of Villa. Honestly, we scored the goals in the right moments, so I am really pleased with this game today. It was our fifth game in two weeks and most of the players played every single game. Muscular injuries with Adam Wharton and Ismaïla Sarr.
“The performance and the win is great.”
On Marc Guehi: “Of course, I have mentioned it so often [about wanting to keep Marc Guehi]. We have to. Again, it is if we want a successful season. We have had a fantastic start.
“We had a great start, so it is just the start. The first step is made and for a successful season we need Marc. It is not possible to find a replacement in one day.
“This is our captain. We have to keep him. I told this to the chairman [Steve Parish].
“I like Marc, he is such a professional player and such a nice guy. It is for the future of Crystal Palace. We have to keep him.
“We don’t have the right replacement, so for me, it is clear that we keep him.”
Glasner speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Congratulations and big credit to the players. Busy start and also short of numbers, many players played every single game.
“We had to pay the bill today with two muscle injuries, but the players did so excellently.”
On Adam Wharton and Ismaïla Sarr’s injuries: “Muscle injuries, so the players are not used to playing this rhythm. Maybe I need to rotate a bit more. The games are so competitive, and they played most of the minutes. I think these things can happen. We will have the scan tomorrow and get the results. We always want to avoid muscle injuries.
“Changing the surface where you played makes it a little difficult.
“But, again, it is what it is. A great performance from every single one. I was delighted how we coped with the circumstances. We controlled the game and played forward.
“We had six games and four clean sheets. Everybody knows what to do. We always play with more or less the same players and this helps.
“They were able to create chances to score.”
On Marc Guehi: “I told this to chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.
“We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building. We wanted a replacement by the 1st July. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players – he is our captain.
“Again, if we want to play a successful season we have to keep him.”
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: “Frustrated yes, but we played the first half well and followed the game plan we were expecting and we were dominating the match. We were not creating good chances, we had one very good one with [Ollie] Watkins. But we were dominating.
“We did not concede corners or set pieces. We had good ball possession and did not concede many transitions. Then we conceded the penalty and it was 1-0, so of course after it was more difficult.
“The second half we started well the first 20-25 minutes until the second goal and then maybe after it was more difficult. Of course we are frustrated and sad for our supporters but you have to accept it.
“In the first three games we have started badly but tomorrow is 1st September, the transfer window finishes and I am confident for the next matches after this week.”
On the transfer window: “Yes we need some players but now we have what we have and we need to try to get more balance again, more than in the transfer window.
“You get balance with the players tomorrow after the transfer window and after the break we have a lot of players with the national team – this is one of the developments we have had in the three years here, a lot of players with national team and we are playing in Europe – sometimes to keep this level is not easy.
“Of course we are frustrated when we are not able to have the level of performance but I am confident that we can find the balance and the structure in everything, and our mentality as well.”
On Emi Martinez: “We have to fix it with him. Tomorrow the transfer window finishes and we are expecting something hopefully to improve the squad. But we keep calm. One of the situations we are speaking about is Emi Martinez but we will see tomorrow. Then we try to get the balance and try to work after the break and try again at Everton to recover our mentality.”
🚨🗣 – Unai Emery when asked about Emi Martinez not being in the Aston Villa squad tonight:
“Bizot. Marco Bizot”
Where is Martinez?
“Marco Bizot”Will he be your future keeper?
“Marco Bizot” 🤣🤣🤣— UF (@UtdFaithfuls) August 31, 2025
Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Good evening.
“Sad for our supporters. Frustrated with the result.
“We were dominating – we were not conceding transitions, not conceding a lot of attacks off them. We were more or less dominating.
“We made one mistake and they scored [Palace’s opening goal]. Of course, in the dressing room we were talking about how we needed to follow the gameplan.
“Of course, this defeat is something we have to be frustrated at.”
On the transfer window: “We have some circumstances that’s not helping us. Tomorrow is finishing the transfer window. Hopefully, we can keep balance after it with the squad.
“This is really important to see how we can again recover our power like we did last year.”
On Emiliano Martinez: “We will see tomorrow [f he stays a Aston Villa player]. Of course, one of the circumstances that is not helping us.
“We need others, of course. I am happy with the players we have, but we have to get something more in the squad.”
Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, speaking to Sky Sports: “We are tired. We give everything. A lot of games and we deserve to finish with this win.
“We work very hard. We have a fantastic manager and fantastic staff. We watched the video, and we did everything on the pitch and that’s why it is working.
“I think Marc is the best goal. We sacrifice a lot. We know we have to play all the game. We sacrifice for the team.
“We have a great group. Hopefully we keep winning.”
On Marc Guehi: “Every game he brings something new, and he is a fantastic player. I hope he stays with us.”
Crystal Palace’s Ismaïla Sarr, speaking to Sky Sports: “I am happy with JP [Jean-Philippe Mateta]. The best striker in the world, in my opinion.”
Marc Guehi, speaking to Sky Sports: “I don’t know. The manager usually gets his tactics spot on against Villa and we always know that when we play them it is going to be a tough game, they’re a team that controls the ball and looks to get in behind and create chances. When you play a team as organised as us, it is always going to be difficult to make chances. Credit to the team for the performance.
“It’s been a tough month. We’ve played six games, so a few more than other teams, but credit to the team. Thank God that most of us are healthy and we get to play football every day with this manager and this staff. We’re all looking forward to what’s next.
“It’s a bit of a blur to be honest. I can’t remember much. All I know is when you score goals like that it is always down to team performance. People will try to single out the goal but that was a clear team performance tonight.”
Speaking to Sky Sports on his goal celebration in front of the travelling fans: “I was tired. So much running. Credit to the team and the way everyone applied themselves today. Everyone was fantastic. It’s important to stay humble, work hard and see what the future holds.
On what the club and the fans mean to him: “They mean a lot. I’m a South London boy. Captain of the football club from a young age. They have been fantastic for me and my family. So it’s definitely a pleasure to play for this football club.
“I don’t like the limelight too much. There’s a lot of cameras in my face all the time and constantly talking about me, but I’m lucky that I have a good club and teammates around me. When you focus on what’s important, the football, it makes it a lot easier. I’m glad I’ve had my family around me, the football club, the staff. It’s good.”

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We had a really good first half and probably deserved a few more goals. Second half we started off a bit slow and they put us under pressure. Coming here to Villa Park there is always going to be a period where you are going to come under pressure, but we stayed resilient and also scoring two more goals on top of that was amazing.
“[Villa’s] style is very effective against a lot of other teams but it just so happens that we’re their kryptonite. Every time we come to play Villa we expect a high scoring game, at least on our end and that’s what happened today. They are a really good team and have been very successful in the last few seasons and we saw that today. In the end we got the penalty and the game opened up and we got a great result.
“You see how close-knit this team is and you can see that on the field. we love each other and we all get along. There was a stigma in the past that we are content to stay in the middle of the table but we want to win trophies and win a lot of games. Hopefully by the end of the season we can win a lot more games.”
On Marc Guehi’s goal and role for the team: “I’m not sure if it was a cross or a goal but it was amazing. We look to Marc for a lot of guidance and a finish like that, a striker’s finish, from a centre half puts the cherry on top. This is my fourth season playing here and I have enjoyed playing alongside him. We are the same age but he feels like the older man. he is our captain for a reason. It’s been a joy to play with him and hopefully we can continue that.”
Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was not good. The goals we conceded are really poor.
“I have seen some tough times at this club and this isn’t necessarily one of them. Now is the time to stick together.
“For it to go the way it did tonight is really disappointed as defenders we have take massive pride in keeping the ball out of the back of the net. I would love to tell you why our start of the season is so poor.
“Again, it is for us to stay calm and for us to act as professionally as possible. The players that want to be here now is the time to stay calm.
“We are playing in the toughest league in the world, and you have to be right at it off the ball.
“The window will shut and we will see what players we have here.”
“To be honest, it was a bit of a blur” 😅
