Coventry boss Mark Robins slams Sheffield Wednesday fans for booing Kasey Palmer at Friday night’s FA Cup Fourth Round fixture.
Sheffield Wednesday fans that booed Kasey Palmer were labelled as a ‘disgrace’ as he was targeted for the second time in a week by a section of the spectators at Hillsborough.
Coventry players took a knee prior to kick off in last night’s tie in a display of unity with the midfielder.
It comes in a week that a man was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Palmer when the sides met in the Championship just last Saturday.
There were some booing as the players took a knee with Palmer also being booed by a minority of fans, jeered after blasting a first-half chance over the crossbar, again after being booked for his challenge on Momo Diaby in the second half, and again when subbed off in the 63rd minute.
“It was disgraceful”

Very disappointing to hear some – and its important to say that it’s just *some* – fans booing the taking of the knee at Hillsborough tonight… Not a good look at at point, but especially not with the context here. #SWFC

Robins hit out of the actions of those fans, calling for tougher sanctions, he said: “It was disgraceful what happened and for somebody to go through mean they shouldn’t have know they shouldn’t have to.
“I think the booing tonight was uncalled for. Again shows there’s a long, long way to go. People need to clamp down on it. People need to grow up.
“First and foremost, this is a human being. We’re all human beings. We all come in the world the same way, we all leave it the same way. It’s what happens in between that matters. And people should be ashamed of themselves, that’s for sure.
“Kasey’s shown bravery and equality and a determination to play. But what happened last week, what happened tonight just uncalled for.
“Society’s got a problem, needs to sort itself out. It’s just totally, totally wrong.”
Interviewer: “Your players all took the need tonight. How important was it that you all as a team showed that togetherness?”
Robins: “Well, that was the players, they wanted to do that. I am fully and me and the staff, the club fully behind them. But like I say, it’s sad indictment on society and it needs to change.”
Robins was also quoted as saying, per The Star: “He’s playing football. We’re in a game where we work really hard, and they come out to entertain people and it shouldn’t happen.
“It’s a disgrace, the reaction was a disgrace, people need to take a look at themselves, what are they doing, ridiculous, it was an absolute joke.
“Kasey’s a football player with family and wants to play and enjoy his football like everyone else. Then you’ve got these idiots, absolute clowns.”
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl said: “From everybody around the stadium, take responsibility for such situations and then we can stop this together. I think we want to see football and we want to speak not about such topics.
“Everybody has to enjoy football and there’s no space for such a situations and I think this is a clear message from our side, from my side.
“We are open minded, everybody and I think in a modern world we should not speak about such a topics.
“I think more important is that everybody is enjoying this life and also football and this is why we are here.”

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl adds: “We deserved the draw – we invested a lot in this game as well.
“I think we did well in the second half, always on the front foot, and the first half was OK.
“All in all we can improve in the final third in some situations, we have to find the smart pass to create more chances.
“The replay is not easy as you have one more game but this is football, we have to do it and take the good things from this game.”
Coventry City boss Mark Robins: “If you can’t win, don’t lose. We bring them back to our place and we will have a right go.
“I thought the game was scrappy. The pitch was difficult, and they make it difficult with the way they set-up.
“We took the lead through an unbelievable strike, brilliant goal. We could have capitalised on other chances and Ellis (Simms) has had one in the second half that stands out and if we take that we go on and win, but we didn’t manage to do that.
“They come back into it and their player has a shot from the edge of the box that takes a deflection and beats Ben, but then we go down the other end and we could’ve snatched it, but their keeper makes a good save to deny Jamie Allen.
“I thought there was some bits of quality from us and that was the tale of the game really.”
This is how Twitter users reacted as Coventry boss Mark Robins slams Sheffield Wednesday fans for booing Kasey Palmer and players taking the knee…
@GrantR_1867: I’ve seen plenty of people say the boo-ing was nothing to do with racism. Whether it was or wasn’t, in the context of what happened last week, optically it looks horrendous. Grow up and use some common sense. #swfc
@Christoph0512: The booing of Coventry players taking the knee and booing Kasey Palmer after last week was utterly shameful, sickening, and embarrassing. Those fans bring shame on our club. #swfc
@SpeakeasyClub1: If this was you booing last night. Back yourself an explain why you did it? It’s a disgrace to yourself, those close to you, the club you “support”, the genuine fans of that club and most importantly, those you aim the booing at. Uneducated and scared behaviour. You’re not #swfc
@_Bluntyyy: It feels impossible to be proud of our club at the minute. I know that’s negativity but somethings got to change. #swfc
@Katiesouth67: Some of these replies! Just completely miss the point of ONE act in support of a friend and colleague. An opportunity to show that as a group Wednesday fans condemn last weeks racist behaviour has been passed up and there are some that will say you have shown your true selves
@FMLekaj: This is why we have a bigger problem in society than people want to admit. Disappointing.
@gsherrington80: Robins spot on, as usual. Sheffield Wednesday really need to make strong statement at very least. And a lot of people need slapping round the head.
@kieranblood3: Why on earth would you boo him? Mark 100% here fucking disgraceful how he’s kept his cool in this interview I’ll never know
@ManicOwl1984: Wednesday had a chance to firmly take a stand against racism last night either by team taking the knee, or the fans applauding Kasey Palmer. We did neither. Section of north stand booed him in fact. Disappointing again from our fan base
@easey04: We had the chance tonight to stand side by side with you and show there’s no need for racism in football and society and yet some of our fans yet again let us down 😒 Disheartening, saddening and heartbreaking words to describe how I feel about my club atm! KICK IT OUT!!!
@Azuliblancos: Get the fuck out of our club. Seriously. If you can’t stop yourself from being a horrible racist cunt for 1 minute, you’re not welcome. Fuck off. #swfc
