Coventry’s Kasey Palmer speaks out over racism incident as he calls for more to be done

Coventry’s Kasey Palmer speaks out over the racism incident that took place last weekend as he calls for more to be done about it.

The  strong and very powerful message by the midfielder comes after reported abuse after Coventry’s Championship fixture with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough last Saturday. A man has since been arrested.

South Yorkshire Police continue to investigate the alleged racially aggravated abuse directed at Palmer, while another alleged incident in European leagues last weekend saw Fifa president Gianni Infantino calling for the implementation of an automatic forfeit of games for teams whose fans commit racist abuse.

Now is the time for stronger action, for players to take the stance of walking off the pitch, to have those who experienced racism to be heard.

Kasey Palmer said in a series of videos: “Racism is not normal and we should never accept it. We need to match all the campaigns we do as players and clubs with the help of firm actions implemented by higher authorities who have the power to do so if they really want to.

“Plenty of kids grow up wanting to be footballers, so as role models of a forever growing sport, we need to do more to find better solutions for this to be a better environment for them. Enough is enough or the same problems will continue to happen.

“If firm and strong changes are not put in place to prevent them, there will be no change. With constant words, action is needed. We can’t keep covering over the cracks which lead to the same cycle. How long are we going to sweep? Race them under the carpet?

“Statements were released. People were protecting their own images, but ultimately there was no real care for the situation.

“No matter your background, you should always be able to embrace who you are, and no one should be ashamed to do so. Racism is taught. In my opinion, you are not born racist.

“The saddest part for me about the weekend was explaining what happened to my six year old son when I got home, who had no idea why a monkey was an insult towards his dad.

“Most people will never have to experience that, which is a privilege that can’t be taken for granted.

“Kids are innocent and as a society we play a key role in shaping their habits, how they grow up and how they see the world.

“It’s bigger than just racism at a football match and it should be treated that way. We might not be able to change everyone’s mindset as some people remain stuck in their arrogant ways, but more can be done to influence the next generation which for me is key to making positive changes.

“As a father of three young kids, the correct steps must be put in place when needed to act promptly to racist abuse if we are going to stamp it out of our game.

“We all constantly say the game is for everyone so there must be stronger consequences for the actions of those that make us feel unwelcome.

“I could carry on with my thoughts but until the right steps are put in place by people in positions of power instead of just words, it’s a conversation that will never end. Change is needed.”
