Chelmsford City sign ex-Norwich, Coventry, Walsall and Gillingham striker

Chelmsford City have managed to sign up an ex-Norwich, Coventry, Walsall and Gillingham striker, with the season currently in doubt.

The National League South outfit have said they they are delighted to welcome former Premier League and experienced EFL player Simeon Jackson.

He joins the squad with the likes of other players at Chelmsford to have played in the higher tiers of English football such as Adam Morgan, Robbie Simpson, Cole Kpekawa, Elliot Omozusi, Michael Spillane and Elliott Ward.

CHELMSFORD CLUB STATEMENT

Jackson, 33, has a wealth of experience in the game, having started his career in England at Rushden & Diamonds where he became a prolific goalscorer, which earnt him a move to Football League side Gillingham. In the 2008-09 season, Jackson scored 20 league goals in League Two, and then scored all 3 goals in the Gills’ successful playoff run, including scoring the only goal in the 2009 League Two Playoff Final at Wembley.

Jackson’s prolific goalscoring earnt him a move to Norwich, where he played alongside fellow Claret Elliott Ward. Jackson played a key part in Norwich going up to the Premier League, scoring 13 league goals, including the winner against Portsmouth which sealed promotion. Jackson then played 2 seasons in the Premier League before joining Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig in 2013 for a season.

On his return to England, Jackson played for numerous clubs at the Championship and League One level, including Blackburn Rovers where he once again appeared alongside Elliott Ward. Jackson then played in the Scottish Premiership where he appeared for St Mirren and Kilmarnock, before returning to England once more to play for Stevenage.

Jackson has also had a successful international career. While born in Jamaica, he moved to Canada at a young age, and picked up 49 caps for Les Rouges. After playing in Canada’s run to the Gold Cup quarter-finals in 2009, Jackson won the Canadian Player of the Year award and in 2011, Jackson became only the second Canadian to score a hat-trick in World Cup Qualifying when he netted 3 against Saint Lucia.

Chelmsford City manager Robbie Simpson said of the acquisition: ”We’re delighted to sign Simeon. Jake Cass has made a great start to his Chelmsford career but I still felt we were missing an experienced head up front after Charlie Sheringham’s departure. Simeon has played a lot of games in the Football League and he will be a great influence not only on the pitch but off it as well. He also gives us something different to our other forward players which adds to our nice blend of attacking talent. We’re really excited to have him and I’m looking forward to him donning the Claret shirt.”

Simeon said: “I’m grateful to be back playing football and I’m looking forward to being on the pitch fighting for 3 points on a Saturday.

“There’s thousands of players out there right now without a club so I’m just happy to be back involved doing what I love.”
