Burnley issue statement on relegation after defeat to Man City, who leapfrog Arsenal to go top

Burnley issue statement on relegation after a 1-0 defeat to Man City, who leapfrog Arsenal to go top of the Premier League.

Erling Haaland got the only goal of the game to see City above Arsenal on goals scored, the result also sending Burnley down.

Scott Parker’s side did manage to frustrated the title-chasers however, preventing them from bettering their goal difference, as that now becomes a factor in this title race with 5 games to go.

Man City netted only once from 28 shots throughout the game and also struck the woodwork twice, one via the post and another hitting the bar.

Burnley issued a statement after the game: “Confirmation of relegation from the Premier League has been the consequence of a difficult season for everyone connected with Burnley Football Club.

“We began the campaign fully aware that the most demanding league in the world would present significant challenges. This outcome is not what anyone connected with the club wanted.

“This season has presented challenges that have tested every part of the club. There have been periods of progress and performances that demonstrate the standards we expect, but ultimately, we have fallen short of the quality and consistency required to compete at Premier League level.

“We would like to thank our supporters that have been with us through every high and low, home and away. That continued support is fundamental to everything we do.

“Burnley Football Club has 144 years of history. It has never been defined by a single season, but by its ability to respond and move forward.”

Man City’s Pep Guardiola said to Sky Sports:

“The chances were there, we created a lot. Made a fantastic game. We did everything after a demanding game three days ago. So it was demanding. It wasn’t easy. We missed some goals here. No frustration. Why should I be frustrated? We are right now top of the table. Frustration doesn’t exist.

“Of course, we can do better and score goals. The guys did absolutely everything, we just didn’t score [more]. Nothing was taken for granted, we did really well.”

On if the performance wasn’t as strong because of being drained from Sunday? “I completely disagree. We had better performances in terms of chances, chances, chances than on Sunday. Of course, the opponent of Arsenal is extraordinary. We know that. The performance itself was really, really good.

“Five games. It’s the Premier League for five games. This is the reality. Now we have a really tough semi-final on Saturday.

“It’s a big opportunity to play four finals in a row. We will see how tired we are. Maybe we have to make some changes because otherwise, it’s been a lot of minutes for players. At the end, we were a little bit tired. But we are ready.”

Man City’s Erling Haaland, speaking to Sky Sports: “We had a lot of chances but I am just happy we won. That is the most important thing. Nothing else, we just try and win.

“Now we focus on Saturday. We keep going, try to win and then it’s Everton next [in the Premier League].

“One-nil is amazing, I am super happy. I don’t know why you keep asking me about that [the scoreline]. We win, we get three points, we are top of the league.”

Burnley boss Scott Parker said to BBC Match of the Day regarding his side’s relegation: “Overall I think the performance tonight speaks volumes of us as a group. The inevitable was there, but I am proud of the players, we just fell a bit short. Playing against Manchester City, you’re going to have few opportunities – in fact we probably had quite a few. Overall a brilliant performance and for that I am immensely proud.

“I thought the stadium was brilliant tonight. It has been mixed at certain moments and I get the frustration, but we left everything on the pitch tonight. I said that to the group tonight; the paying spectators want to see that and we did that to a tee.”

On the future: “The club has had to [bounce back] over the last few years. There is a lot of learning to do and that is exactly what we’ll do, we’ll reflect on where we’ve fallen short. We need to work out where we’ve gone wrong and come back stronger next year.”

If the club want to keep you, will you stay? “It’s been a relentless season for everyone, me included. We [he and the board] will sit down and reflect, work out where we move forward and go from there.”

Burnley’s Kyle Walker, to Sky Sports: “It was a disappointing evening. I am a player for Burnley and I will do my best for the shirt to make sure we get a result. Unfortunately now we are relegated but we need to play the remaining games with that level of performance.

“What this club means to this town is incredible. I drive through it every day. It means a lot to them. From us to them, thank you for every bit of support this season and hopefully we can do you proud next season.

“I came here with a dream to keep this club up. I achieved a lot personally but this would have been right up there. It would have been very special to keep this club up.

“This is people’s dreams that have now come to an end in the Premier League. They need to use this fire to make sure we are back here next season.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Burnley issue a statement on relegation after a 1-0 defeat to Man City, who leapfrog Arsenal to go top…

@LR21110: Accepted relegation in November when you failed to sack that fraud cos he’s a ‘nice guy’ 👍🏻👍🏻

@ClaretJD: Well if you wanted to stay in the league maybe you should have made some managerial decisions back in December?

@jackbell94: Somebody needs to tell Parker how to move forward because all we’ve done all season is sideways and backwards. How you expect to win games by not actually trying to get the ball out of your own half is mind blowing. Press the re-set button Burnley 🚨 #twitterclarets

@claretcrumpet: Tonight, this Burnley side has been extremely hard-working and VERY well organised. The players actually look as though they know each other and train together most days. Too little, too late, but still, a very good effort (so far) #twitterclarets

@joepattison97: Every relegation hurts. This one no different, however the writing was on the wall since November. Far too many passengers in that dressing room, a manager that is far too negative and an ownership group that hasn’t got a clue. The premier league won’t be missed. #twitterclarets

@claret_jack: I said 12 months ago I was worried about getting promoted & trying to bridge the ever increasing gap and it has proved to be the case. Many things have been the cause and not one person is to blame. I personally wouldn’t mind a few seasons in the championship now #twitterclarets

@_ConorBFC: Honestly, couldn’t give two about that performance. Everyone at the club, bar a select few players, from top to bottom, have been nothing short of a disgrace. 3 relegations, 3 times @AlanPaceBFC has “got it wrong.” Can’t get away with it for much longer. #twitterclarets

@Smallpaul11: All we want is to be proud of our team, whether we go all out defence or all out attack. An identity… busting a gut, body’s on the line. We got it tonight…8 months too late #twitterclarets

@ma32550: Amazing what a team can do when the manager says play as individuals for your future. Absolutely none of the ones that get out as quick as they can will be remembered in the future. This one’s on you @AlanPaceBFC #twitterclarets
