Bristol City’s Liam Manning wants VAR in the Championship after controversial Swansea goal

Bristol City’s Liam Manning wants VAR in the Championship after a controversial Swansea goal was allowed to stand on Sunday.

Ben Cabango tapped in from a Eom Ji-sung corner at the far post in the 15th minute, but Manning felt aggrieved, claiming Swansea forward Ronald had appeared to block keeper Max O’Leary, wrapping both of his arms around O’Leary.

This was missed by referee Josh Smith, with Manning having something to say on it. Take a look at his post-match reaction below…

Manning said per Sky Sports: “It’s quite clear for me, when you see it back [Swansea’s goal]. I’ve seen it from numerous angles, Max is trying to get free but it’s hard when somebody has hold of you.

“I want contact but when it’s that obvious. Block within the laws of the game, but that’s a clear foul.

“It’s getting to the stage where VAR will probably help it. There’s cons to it, but also a huge amount of pros. When you look at key decisions dictating outcomes of games, it’s a huge part of it.

“We had a pre-season meeting with the referees and the EFL and they said they were going to clamp down on blocking and grabbing people.

“You’re told it’s going to happen and then it’s not, so it’s frustrating. I haven’t spoken to the referee [Andrew Kitchen]. No point. It’s not going to change or do anything.

“We’ll send in our report and I can guess what the response will be. If you do it, do it, but don’t say in pre-season meetings you’re going to go after it and then don’t. That’s my point.”

Manning per BBC Sport: “First half we probably conceded too much territory, we were a little bit too passive. But we put in a really strong performance second half.”

On Swansea’s goal: “It’s quite clear for me [a foul], when you see it back. I’ve seen it from numerous angles, Max [O’Leary] is trying to get free but it’s hard when somebody has hold of you.

“We had a pre-season meeting with the referees and the EFL and they said they were going to clamp down on blocking and grabbing people. Then, when you see the side-on angle on Max, you can see the shirt grabbed and the block. But you get them or you don’t get them and it’s how you respond to that.”

Swansea’s Luke Williams per Sky Sports: “If you go down that road then there will be very few goals scored from set-pieces because people are impeded at every one.

“I haven’t seen the video, but if the complaint is about someone being impeded – please.

“I’ve got a very clear idea about what shifted the momentum, and it’s moments.

“It’s key moments where we made the wrong choice and, in this way, we’re not such a good team.

“We suffered and, in the end, we’re only just about value for a point.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Bristol City’s Liam Manning says he wants VAR in the Championship after the controversial Swansea goal…

@TheExiledRobin: I’ve watched this about 15 times now & sorry, Max, but that’s just not good enough. Being held a bit, but he stands there like a lemon. Doesn’t push him away, doesn’t shove his arms to free himself up. Doesn’t do anything. Plus, he barely complains to the Ref – he knows it’s weak. I watched his reaction after the goal. He kind of half jogged towards the Ref, half heartedly. Wasn’t animated, the rest of the team weren’t arguing. Just weak from him, McNally, and the two being held by one player – plus then poor at the back that 2 of theirs are first to it. Plus, if we can spot that you can be certain Sheff Weds and Barry Bannan will be. Expect inswingers under the bar and a man on Max’s toes

@DanAbbott_BC: It also baffles me why we don’t have a man there to get between them?

@BLbcfc: People can say he has to be stronger but you have to question how cabango has even got that free to have a simple tap in it reminds me so much of Gabriel vs Man City last week it’s crazy

@crobbyg: shite defending regardless would’ve been soft anyway

@John_evans21: Yes it’s probably a foul and yes we should send someone to get in the way, but Max just has to do more, there is almost nothing that Max can do that will cause a foul to get given against him, so he just needs to move the bloke.

@15mel03: Agree if you don’t complain u have no chance of the ref giving it mind we complained about naughton and he wasn’t sent off 😂😂 ref was poor, O’learys kicking is poor as well

@McStreety: Shit show. Max should be asking for defenders help to get him away (defenders should see that anyway). That then will alert the ref, ref will then focus on the Max, if that happens? Probs a freekick before the ball gets into the box. Poor game management.

@Millz_10: It’s a foul and the arms are up blocking in. My biggest concern is why no one has gone to take him away from Max. Why have we allowed him to try and pin Max in the first place. That’s poor defensively

@TheExiledRobin: The striker holding two players too. Both fouls, but weak from GK & Defenders to not escape clutches somehow

@cianblunt3: So weak just push him off you

@blueygood: Yes. Max has to command his box and be stronger.

@BCFC_Supporters: Max needs to be stronger

@cumulojimbus72: Yes. Definitely. But they never are normally.

@RealBristolBoy: Of course not

@Sam_whitehead89: No. How is that not impeding Max?

@liammaggs0: can’t believe we didn’t even consider going for a keeper in the window

@BristolcityF: So soft. Unbelievably bad defending

@Leetheo1: Max has to be stronger there that was soft

@Pappa__Chang: Max has to do better, we need some decent competition for that position as he’s not good enough

@r0bpars0ns: 3 years later and O’Leary is still not good enough

@pure_robin719: How are the Sky commentators saying Max wasn’t fouled there when they’ve literally got their arm around him ffs
