Bournemouth’s amusing tweets after beating Arsenal go viral with Mikel Arteta frustrated

Bournemouth’s amusing tweets after beating Arsenal 2-0 go viral with Mikel Arteta expressing just how frustrated he was.

Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert netted late goals for the impressive Cherries to leave Arsenal, without injured Bukayo Saka, beaten for the first time this season.

Saliba picked up a yellow card for a last-man foul on Evanilson near the centre circle, which came following a misplaced pass from Leandro Trossard. But, after VAR had a look, referee Robert Jones upgraded the card to red, resulting in the Gunners being reduced to ten players for the third time this season.

Bournemouth were already making it tough for Mikel Arteta’s team, and the breakthrough came in the 70th minute following a well-executed corner routine which saw substitute Ryan Christie deliver a powerful finish.

Arsenal missed a number of chances, including one where substitute Gabriel Martinelli had squandered a prime opportunity to put Arsenal ahead, instead shooting too close to Kepa Arrizabalaga after the Bournemouth keeper had carelessly given the ball away to Mikel Merino just outside his own penalty area.

Bournemouth were in control, putting more misery on the visitors, with Justin Kluivert, another Bournemouth substitute, calming nettling from the penalty spot after David Raya brought down Evanilson.

The defeat is Arsenal’s first in a Premier League away game since the turn of the year. It means they miss the chance to go top of the table, above leaders Liverpool, who they will face next Sunday.

Bournemouth, meanwhile go into the top half of the table.

Player of the Match: Ryan Christie

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in his press conference: “We are obviously very disappointed with the result and gutted because we have to play again in that context. This time was even more difficult than the previous two we faced this season.

“Playing for 65 or 68 minutes with 10 men at this level is just an impossible task. It’s an accident waiting to happen, not to get the points. I cannot fault the team for their effort, their commitment, how intelligent they are to play in the way that we have to do it.

“There is a big moment obviously with 0-0 when we have a big opening, one against one with the ‘keeper. We don’t manage to score and at the other end we do that. We have to fault ourselves.

“Football is a sport where errors are part of that. Tonight we made two big errors that have cost us the game unfortunately.”

On whether Arsenal have any plans to appeal Saliba’s red card: “That decision was changed and now the decision is not going to change twice. So, decision made.

“We have to accept it, move on and have that pain that we are feeling at the moment for Tuesday [against Shakhtar Donetsk].”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Match of the Day, said: “It’s very difficult to win in the Premier League with 10 men for 60-70 minutes, it’s just an accident waiting to happen. We have had to go through it in three games and that cost us the game.

“We had the big chance and the moment in the game to score and have a different result and then we conceded a goal. We try to stick to the rules. The three [red cards] have been different ones and three very different outcomes.

“The team tried, the effort with 10 men was fantastic but today it was not enough to win the game. It took us a while to understand what we had do in the first 15 minutes to start with, then we grabbed the game but after 30 minutes the game changed.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was quite a mature win because it is a tricky situation [playing against 10 men]. We started well for the first 30 minutes and then the red card changes the game. We had to control the game, attack but don’t lose our minds as even with 10 men, set plays, free-kicks they can be a threat. Luckily for us we took the benefit of having one man more.

“Before half-time we missed a couple of chances and at the beginning of the second half we managed not to finish, so we had to have patience to take the benefit of having one more player without losing our heads.

“We were playing very well the first 30 minutes. It was a very level game, which is very good when you face this opposition. It became easier with 11v10 but everything is not done, you have to finish the job and we did it.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Sport: “For us it was an important game after losing the last one against Leicester so we had to recover.

“Today we started very well. There was the red card and from then it was tricky as they are still a threat from set plays, free kicks. But we had the patience and ended the game well

“The advantage they have at set plays is they are taller than us so we had to find another way to make a difference. Today it worked and it was important.

“At the end they decided they are going to attack the same way, obviously conceded more space in behind and we had to take every chance. We benefit from a mistake and got the penalty, but even at 2-0 we had to finish the game”.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to Sky Sports, says: “We’ve kicked ourselves in the foot three times in eight games and we got away with it at home to Brighton and away at Manchester City. Bournemouth kept probing and made it 2-0.

“I’m proud of the players for fighting, even with 10 men, but the naivety, we need to stop making mistakes because you want 11 players for 90 minutes and that’s what wins you football matches.

“With 10 men we showed a lot of character and personality to stay in the game. The big chance was Martinelli’s and the keeper read it and made a great save and one minute later, normally a routine we are so strong at, has done us.

“We can’t make silly mistakes. You need all your best players on the pitch at all times. The belief is so high and we will stick together. This is football, whatever happens the most important thing is that you stick together and stay in the right direction.”

Bournemouth goalscorer Ryan Christie speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Big win. One thing we are trying to change from last season is to take some points off the top teams. Arsenal are a great side and the red card probably changed the game quiet a lot but nice to beat a title contender.

“We need to take a lot of confidence from this. We were frustrated with the Leicester result before the break, knowing we had a tough run of games coming up but tonight shows we can go and take the game to these teams. We need to to into the Villa game next with the same mindset.”

On the Saliba red card: “To be honest I’ve not seen it back. All I know is that Eva [Evanilson] is going through on goal and I hardly think that the defender has played the ball so for me I’ll stick with the red card.”

On his goal: “It was a move off the training ground. I’m not normally the one on the end of it to be fair, but credit to Shaun Cooper who us coming up with loads of different set pieces, he has new ones for us to try each game.

“To do it with all the subs that were coming on as well is brilliant. A great touch around the corner from Justin [Kluivert] and it was great to see it go into the back of the net.”

Aims for the season: “We didn’t set an exact target but we are hoping to improve as a club season in and season out. We were happy with last season but we know we can push further and one of the things that will take us there is to get points off the top six like we have done today.”

Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook to Sky Sports: “Massive. They are a top top team, the football they have played in the last few years. But the lads dug deep, controlled the game in big spells and got the win.

“We did a lot of work in the week. They have a lot of attacking players that can change the game. The red card helped so we could take control of the game.

“Sometimes when a team go a man down they can start playing well, like they did at [Manchester] City. But we created the chances needed to win the game. We know we want to be clinical as each goal in this league is massive.

“Arsenal are so compact. You think of them as an attacking team but they can adapt. We matched them today and got the win.”

Bournemouth’s amusing tweets after beating Arsenal go viral with Mikel Arteta frustrated, here’s how fans reacted…

@asinge69: Just recovered. Great performance. Were doing well 11 v 11. They had no chance 11 v 10. Never in doubt. Nearly keeled-over when Christie scored 💥 UTCIAD 🍒🍒 #afcb

@Cherryboy53: I love my team and have done for decades. We have had some brilliant moments great teams an great managers. Tonight I left the ground thinking I just witnessed something special developing and I felt so proud #afcb

@HQSoton: Utterly mental how far our football club is off of this lot. We’re run by absolute clowns with no knowledge on how to become a successful football club. Get them fucking gone along with Martin as well. #saintsfc

@chezdezigns: What. A. Win. Fantastic second half. Subs made a huge impact. Arsenal never had a reply following the sending off. #afcb #afcbournemouth

@Paytress: Was almost going to post a stupidly optimistic scoreline this morning but thought better of it. Turns out reality wasn’t far off, after all. That should put the confidence back in the tank.

@84arussell: Aren’t we just. They’ll saw Arsenal threw it away because giving the lads the credit they deserve is too hard but 3 massive points off the back of playing Iraola ball. Lewis Cook for England! #UTCIAD

@LFC_Drew: I was thinking this today that Bournemouth away is the easiest game in the calendar for title hopefuls. I can’t think of a fixture in the last 7/8 years until today where title hopefuls hadn’t gone to their place and slapped these by atleast 3 goals.

@KirkTovey: I would have probably taken a point from Arsenal, Villa and City games. The fact we have 3 already I say we go and scare Emery’s Villa after their Champions League week and of course we now know that we beat City at home for the 1st time ever in the #PL. Beautiful 😜 #afcb

@InsideAFCB: A lot of people will claim that the red card changed the match with the amount of possession Arsenal had prior. However that may be partly true, you have to give credit to us today as we took hold of the game and grabbed the win! 🍒 A stupendous set piece routine from us saw us go ahead with a terrific finish by Christie. Then, a penalty was won by Evanilson and converted by Kluivert to see us win against the title contenders. ⚽⚽ Up to 10th, you reds! 🍒

@lucaskehoe: completely dismantled the ‘best defence in the league’ up the tinpot chez #afcb

@jbafcb77: Remember everyone we was wrong to sack O’Neil who is currently bottom of the premier league and replace him with Iraola who has given us some of the best football this club has ever seen 🍒 #afcb
