Bolton’s match with Brentford called off – first ever EFL game to not go ahead due to strike

Bolton Wanderers’ match with Brentford tomorrow afternoon has been called off it has been revealed tonight.

The reason is yet to be confirmed however the players threatened to boycott their remaining matches unless they receive their unpaid wages.

They have not been given their March salaries and April’s wages is due for Tuesday the 30th of April.

The squad said in a statement that the ongoing events at the club is “creating mental, emotional and financial burdens for people through no fault of their own”. It was “placing great strain on ourselves and our families” and said to supporters “may be seen as drastic action” but decision “not been taken lightly” and “with deep regret”.

It is believed that this is the first game in Football League history to have been called off for a strike.

BOLTON WANDERERS CLUB STATEMENT:

“Bolton Wanderers Football Club regrettably confirms that Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Brentford has been called off.

“The club would like to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

“A further update will be released in due course.”

 

Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday afternoon, Bassini insisted: “I’m going to get the game back on.

“I’m going to be speaking with the players after I leave here. It’s not the players’ fault. They’ve been messed about so much.

“I don’t have control to pay them. I’m not allowed. The accounts are frozen. Ken Anderson doesn’t pay anyone. (But) I’m going to pay them. That’s why I’ve transferred £1m so they get paid. I wanted to pay them this afternoon.

“Anderson was supposed to send across the shares certificate but he’s coming up with lots of excuses. He cannot put any ultimatums. He does not have any authority to do that.”
