A Bank Holiday Monday to forget as Scunthorpe fans leave on the 68th minute after their side concede four goals away at Carlisle.

The Cumbrians picked up their second win of the season, taking them to 9th with 8 points in the National League table, but for Scunthorpe, they are 19th with 4 points.

The hosts took the lead after just 7 minutes, before Jordan Richards levelled on 28 minutes. But from there on, Scunthorpe began letting it what Andy Butler called ‘cheap goals’.

Regan Linney (33′) and Josh Williams (38′) had Carlisle going into the break 3-1 up, and mid-way through the second half Junior Luamba (68) added him to the scoresheet. Just before the end, Ross Barrows got Scunthorpe’s second, proving to be a consolation.

Scunny’s Andy Butler said: “Yeah, frustrating. Early on we had a lot of control of the ball, their first attack, they going to have a score from not a great worked goal, more of a cut back to the edge of box, lost the contact, didn’t squeeze the ball, didn’t block shots, so we had a defensive point of view, just a point in there.

“Probably gained a fall back in the game after nearly five minutes after the goal, got ourselves back into the game.

“But then we shoot ourselves in the foot. Two cheap goals. Allowing players inside to shoot, open the goal up, then the third goal was really about defending from us, two players challenging for the same ball, no one covering round, allowed linging in the box, and yeah, so, without playing with their ability, time and space to shoot, we’ll just go golf.

“To this point, even start of the second half, this point in terms of how we concede the goal, many few changes, at the end of it, it have been 4-0, 5-0, 7-6, whatever you want to call it.”

Carlisle’s Rob Elliot said to CUTV: “There were some excellent performances all round and I thought that the subs that came on gave us the energy we needed.

“Scunthorpe are very good, but we stood up to the challenge and played some good football.

“It’s been a long six or seven days, and I think that we’ve managed it really well today and that was really pleasing.

“To back it up with four points is excellent, some good goals and some really good energy,”

On Azeez scoring in back-to-back home games: “He’s got huge quality and I thought he was excellent in the game today yet again.

“We’re asking a lot of Miggy (Azeez) out of possession because that’s where he can develop even more.

“He was superb against Wealdstone and was top today.”

On Josh Williams: “I’ve been really pleased with him; he obviously got injured in the off-season and he’s had to wait for his opportunity.

“It was a fantastic finish from him, and that’s what I’m going to demand from him because he’s got every attribute that you could ask for.

“He’s a serious player, but he’s got to continue getting the basics right.”

@smashedagain: The owners are losing the fans. Ian and George need to invest not loan the club to buy us out of the league or Michelle has to look at new investment that won’t be loaning the club money or we will slowly lose the fans interest. Give Butler the money to spend now for next season.

@Ironarmyhd: It’s the results and play that’s knocking numbers off the attendance for me. It’s recruitment and players looking a shadow of what they can do. Confidence and playing style are big things. Can throw money after money but the players have to be on board with it all

@ironbru_net: They are in a tricky spot as fans will turn quickly, but as a board would you give him any extra to spend? On the evidence I’ve seen so far, he’s failed to address a number of issues and wasted a bigger budget on crocks and players that are not up to the level.

@AidanWilko_1717: Butler is beyond bad, that starting 11 set us up to fail. 5 at the back is so useless. Beestin, Starbuck and Brennan all excellent when coming on. He doesn’t start his best team. I can guarantee this team will get us relegated if it doesn’t change. Less than 4k on Saturday easy
