Gillingham fans slam chairman’s decision to sack manager

Gillingham have this afternoon confirmed that they have sacked manager Steve Lovell after 18 months in charge.

The League One side have axed him with two games of the season remaining, he had a year remaining on his contract and leaves them 12th in the table.

Lovell came in over November 2017, after initially being an interim boss for the departed Peter Taylor in a month earlier.

Including his time as caretaker, his record was:

W – 32
D – 26
L – 34
Win % – 35%

The club statement read: “After a discussion between the Chairman and Manager this afternoon, the Club can confirm that Steve Lovell has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

“Mark Patterson will take responsibility for the game against Charlton tomorrow, and Blackpool next week.

“The Club would like to thank Steve for his efforts with the team over the past 18 months and wish him well for the future.

“There will be no further comment at this stage.”
