Bolton and Wigan fans clash post-match despite warning from police

Groups of Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic fans took to clash post-match despite a warning from Greater Manchester Police this weekend.

There had been increased police presence ahead of the match for the lunchtime kick off at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, but after the Trotters were thrashed, it got heated outside of the ground.

This came after GMP has issued a statement ahead of the League One game, with the force stating that ‘any potential disorder will be dealt with swiftly’.

But it seems some fans didn’t take any notice of that and still lashed out at one another…

Superintendent of Operations in Bolton, Danny O’Neill, said, as per MEN: “Today, we will be offering a warm welcome to our neighbours, Wigan, as fans come to Bolton for the game. High visibility patrols will be in and around the ground before, during and after the game, to ensure all fans, both home and away, are kept safe and any potential disorder is dealt with swiftly.

“Our aim of this policing operation is to make sure all attendees are able to enjoy the game within a safe environment and I would ask anybody who has concerns on the day, to approach any police officers or steward on duty to raise those issues.

“We are working closely with both clubs and have met with supporters groups from both teams, as well as Bolton Council, to ensure the game passes with as little disruption as possible on daily business in the local area. Most importantly, we want the fans to enjoy the game but ask that this is done is a safe and responsible way.”

Neil Hart, Chief Executive Officer at Bolton Wanderers said: “The safety and wellbeing of all those attending tomorrow’s match is our priority and, working closely with relevant stakeholders, we look forward to welcoming a bumper crowd to the Toughsheet Community Stadium. We hope everyone joining us has a great day and enjoys the game.”

The game itself saw Wigan outclass Bolton with a 4-0 victory as Charlie Wyke and Stephen Humphrys both netted twice to help move the Latics out of the League One relegation zone.

Wigan, who started the campaign with an eight-point deduction, have gone on to get three wins and drawn one of their opening four fixtures to clear that deficit.

“It was outstanding,” Wigan boss Shaun Maloney said.

“To a man, and the substitutes, I thought the team was brilliant. The players were brave, and Bolton are a good side.

“We made a decision to go really aggressive and the players deserve every bit of credit for that. From the first whistle to the last, I thought they were excellent.

“I hope the fans enjoy every single bit of this.

“I have to be humble because Bolton are a good team and started very well. We were very good.

“To come here with the amount of Academy players we have, new players, and the age of group, it’s a completely different Club. To come here again and have a result like this is special.”

Bolton boss Ian Evatt said: “It’s not good enough. Very poor. I don’t think we gave ourselves the opportunity at any point to win the game.

“We conceded a really poor set play to start with which really rocked us and we didn’t recover. So far this season we’ve had it all our own way and today we were asked questions for which we didn’t come up with the right answers.

“It’s not acceptable and not to the level we’ve been at. It was well below our standards. We’re all going to hurt this weekend but hopefully we can recover from this and use it as an inspiration and a springboard to mount another run.

“It was a game where we lost out on every moment. Every time we looked like we could get back into it, we lost out on another moment or concede another goal. I believe you make your own luck in football and today we didn’t do enough to earn the luck or a result.

“The main thing we didn’t do was the basics. We’re an exciting team and aesthetically pleasing as well at times but we didn’t win enough duels, second balls or transitions. I think that was the difference in the game.

“All along we’ve been asked questions here and rightly so and today that isn’t acceptable in any way, shape or form. That’s not our standard but we can do is react and react in a positive way and get our fans back on side with us.

“We need to lift ourselves off the canvas and go again. I’m sure we will.”
