Barrow’s George Ray gets sent off for horror high boot on Gillingham’s Josh Walker

Barrow’s George Ray gets sent off for a horror high boot challenge on Gillingham’s Josh Walker with the game stopped for 10 minutes.

Gillingham boosted their chances of reaching the League Two playoffs with a comfortable 3-0 victory over 10-man Barrow at Priestfield Stadium.

Despite the loss, Barrow stay in sixth place but has now suffered three consecutive defeats.

The match itself came to life in the 21st minute when George Lapslie was forced off due to injury, with his replacement, Josh Walker, then immediately left injured by George Ray, who got sent off for a high boot.

Gillingham then the lead during the nine minutes of added time at the end of the first half with striker Josh Andrews getting on a through-ball from Remeao Hutton, evaded the offside trap and went around Paul Farman to find the back of the net.

Conor Masterson saw cross from the right deflected into his own net by Barrow’s Rory Feely, resulting in Gillingham’s second goal.

Conor Mahoney added further shine to Gillingham’s performance by once again getting the better of Farman and securing a 3-0 victory.

This result earns Gillingham three crucial points and brings them within just two points of the playoff positions.

Gillingham: Turner, Hutton, Ehmer, Masterson, Clark (Malone 70’), Coleman, Dieng (McKenzie 78’), Mahoney, Lapslie (Walker 21’ (Hawkins 31’)), J. Williams, Andrews (Jefferies 70’)

Unused Substitutes: Morris, Ogie

Barrow: Farman, Feely, Ray, Canavan, Chester, Foley, Campbell (Stephenson 72’), Gotts (Spence 58’), Newby, Acquah (Proctor 58’), Whitfield

Unused Substitutes: Lillis, Telford, Stockton

Referee: Dean Whitestone

Attendance: 5796 (174 away fans)

Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence said, per KentOnline: “You have to adjust and adapt and try and make the right substitutions and find the answers to help the lads, I felt we did that.

“The boys were great, there’s been a lot of criticism thrown about, probably since the Harrogate game and rightly so, we have to accept that.

“What you have to do as an individual and a collective is knuckle down, roll your sleeves up and when you put your boots on you have to go out and give it a right good go, that’s the only way you can shut one or two people up. I asked that of the boys today, I thought they went out there and did that.”

Clemence added: “I am delighted with the three points, that’s the main thing.

“We were going to have to be patient, they had the third best defence in the league, although they went to 10 men their shape didn’t change, 5-3-1. It made it easier for our defenders to get the ball but we still had the same problems getting past them further up the pitch.

“I felt 11 versus 11 we had a good chance with Johnny (Williams) and the keeper made a good save and once the man got sent off we had to find some solutions.

“It’s been hard for us to get goals and teams have come and tried to stop us at Priestfield, I changed us into a diamond to get Johnny around the two strikers and obviously I felt that helped us.

“I am delighted to get the three goals and I would have liked more, being greedy, but win was the most important thing.”
