Leeds coach gets sent off, Szmodics scores late winner and John Eustace winds up Leeds fans

Leeds coach Christopher John gets sent off, Sammie Szmodics scores a late winner and Blackburn boss John Eustace winds up Leeds fans.

It was a dramatic end to the game Championship match with Szmodics getting his 30th goal of the season (24 in the league).

Leeds would have gone top of the table with a win or a draw after rivals Leicester also suffered a shock defeat at Plymouth on Friday night.

But once again, Daniel Farke’s side failed to score for the second time in a week despite dominating at Elland Road.

Blackburn fans also could be heard singing “Leeds are falling apart again!”…

Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears made a number of good saves to keep Leeds out, although the hosts had Illan Meslier to thank for keeping out Szmodics’ efforts in the first half before right-back Connor Roberts stopped a certain goal for Blackburn in the second period.

Meslier couldn’t however stop Szmodics from inflicting Leeds their first home defeat of the campaign with the Rovers goal machine coolly slotting the ball past and left the home crowd stunned.

The result left Blackburn five points clear of the bottom three while Leeds are one point behind Leicester and two behind leaders Ipswich.

Also towards the end of the game, a late red card was shown to Leeds coach Christopher John, who flew out of the dugout to remonstrate with fourth official Keith Stroud after Patrick Bamford went down in the penalty area.

Farke said, per Yorkshire Evening Post, he would have to look into the incident, though the ref’s explanation stated that John encroached in the Blackburn technical area – leading to a confrontation as you can see on the 98th minute in the ‘full match’ video below…

“I haven’t really seen the situation, just when the referee came to give the red card,” said Farke.

“My staff members were appealing for a red card, it’s also quite normal at the crunch time period.

“You also have to understand the emotions, especially after what happened the other night.

“I have to ask for the explanation.

“The fourth official Keith has just told me one of the staff members has crossed the line to their coaching zone, if this is the case we have to apologise because it shouldn’t happen.

“Although I’ve seen many opposition members cross the line into our area and not appealed for red card. If he has then the referee was probably spot on with his decision.

“I would wish the referees are a bit more spot on on the pitch when it comes to key rules, perhaps we’d be there with more points but that’s a different topic.”

Leeds’ Daniel Farke:

When you face a side like Blackburn with a player like Szmodics, he showed the quality which we didn’t show today and he needed just one chance to score.

“So many balls went through the box, but you also need to show the quality to put the ball in the net.

“If you don’t score you have so much more risk. There is also a danger there will be one moment for your opponent and they can score. It’s pretty disappointing and frustrating for us.

“We didn’t put the ball into the net. If you don’t score, you can’t win the game.”

Blackburn’s John Eustace:

“I was very proud of the effort the boys have given me since I came in, it has been outstanding.

“To come here and play like we did was great. We had a game plan without the ball. I am delighted with the effort and very proud of them.”

Blackburn bounced back from a 5-0 loss against Bristol City in midweek and that resilience was what pleased Eustace the most.

He added: “Wednesday was a bit of a blip. That certainly wasn’t a team that I have been a part of. We have been very difficult to beat.

“It’s very important that we keep working hard, sticking together. We have three games left and we still need points.”

Blackburn match winner Sammie Szmodics told Sky Sports:

“No surprises for us really. Everyone doubted us coming here. We knew we needed a reaction and we got a good one.

“It’s a really tough place to come, we showed character, a great reaction and we left with a well-deserved three points.

“It’s great play from Ty, I thought he left it too late but it was a great pass. It’s my job to stick the ball in the net and thankfully I’ve done it again today.”
