Barrow v Colchester halted by incident as player hits back at fan

Friday night’s League Two match, Barrow v Colchester, was halted by an incident as a player hits back at a fan after receiving abuse.

The away side’s head coach Hayden Mullins says the alleged racist abuse aimed at goalkeeper Shamal George in their game at Barrow was ’embarrassing’ and ‘sickening’.

A complaint of racist abuse, directed towards Colchester shot-stopper George, was made by the U’s around the midway through the first half of the U’s 3-2 victory in the League Two encounter, at the Dunes Hotel Stadium.

After referee Simon Mather temporarily stopped the game after the abuse was reported it was formally announced by the Barrow PA system, with the message declaring that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that any racism should be reported.

Mullins said: “It’s embarrassing – I heard at half-time what it is and he has been racially abused.

“It’s not nice what’s been said, especially after you take the knee at the beginning.

“To hear that and it was a section of fans where you hear it from, it’s embarrassing to think that we’re in this day and age and that’s still going on.

“It’s sickening really – he said there was a cluster of people, he’s looked into the crowd and he’s getting racially abused.

“It’s 2021 for God’s sake – we should be moving on from that.

“He (Shamal) has reported it and rightly so.

“You come away from home and there’s not much in the game and you get racially abused – it’s embarrassing really.

“It’s not nice but the pleasing thing for me was that Sham got his head back into the game.

“He did the right thing and reported it and it feels even better, coming up here and getting the win and going back home with the three points.”

George wrote on Twitter afterwards: ‘This team What a big win that is +3 Hope the racists enjoyed that one.’

Barrow said in a statement: The Club has issued a statement following Friday evening’s game against Colchester United.

We are aware of an allegation of racist abuse being directed at a Colchester United player during Friday evening’s Sky Bet League Two fixture at The Dunes Hotel Stadium.

The Club would like to make it absolutely clear that we abhor discrimination in all its forms and will take the strongest action possible, including pursuing life bans, for anyone found guilty of racism.

MATCH REPORT:

Tom Eastman came off the bench to score a late winner as 10-man Colchester made the long trip north across the country to beat Barrow 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Holker Street.

It was the hosts who took a 25th-minute lead when Jordan Stevens netted, after Colchester skipper Tommy Smith’s attempted backpass fell short.

Then Colchester levelled the scoreline 10 minutes later when Alan Judge tapped in from close range from Freddie Sears’ low cross.

The U’s went ahead three minutes later with Sears lifting his shot into the net, after Barrow conceded possession near their own box.

Colchester went down to 10 men in the 68th minute when defender Luke Chambers picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Offrande Zanzala.

Barrow equalised in the 76th minute through Ollie Banks, who scored from the penalty spot after Luke Hannant had fouled Stevens in the box.

But Eastman put the ball in the back of the net thanks to his superb header past goalkeeper Paul Farman from Charlie Daniels’ corner with 10 minutes remaining to restore the visitors’ lead.

Barrow’s James Jones was dismissed for two bookings in quick succession in the closing stages, as the U’s extended their unbeaten run to move up to eighth in the League Two table, a point ahead of their opponents.

Fans reacted after Barrow v Colchester was halted by an incident as player Shamal George hits back at a fan abusing him…

@FazOnTour: Lifetime ban is the only option here if they’re found.

@StarWarsNerd73: Disappointing something like this has to be said, especially considering we have such a diverse group of fantastic players!! We dust ourselves off from tonight, ban the racists, and come back stronger next week!

@Julsey1886: Find them and ban them minimum

@shotb83: Been to Barrow loads of times and never experienced anything along those lines. Was also behind the goal tonight and didn’t hear anything as accused. Not saying it didn’t happen but can only speak highly of Barrow fans from my own experience.

@diesel_wilkes: I was at the barrow game today and i heard other the tannoy the racism was coming from behind the net, i didn’t hear any racism from where i was. However, if there was they should be punished.

@AdrianTraylen: Very well and quickly handled.

@xZanzalax: Disgusting tbf, a good performance which was tarnished by minimal poor fan behaviour

@JTurner_1908: A minority of fans doesn’t justify a club and it’s fan base. Good to see the club make a swift statement and hopefully they are caught

@Jackthelad442: Disappointing but credit to the club for putting out a statement so quickly and showing zero tolerance for racism.

@jeffbarrow81: Incredibly strong statement and one that shows the clubs in good hands.

@bono1712: The club shouldn’t be blamed for one moronic fans abhorrent behaviour but unfortunately it’s gonna be under the microscope now an how they respond will hopefully prevent anymore opposition players or officials havin to hear it or any of the Barrow players for that matter

@JamesHibbert11: 👏👏👏👏 Those scumbags DO NOT represent the 99% of hard working honest fans who go to watch our club racism will never be tolerated here

@gaskin_connor: If there’s something I can’t stand in football its discrimination give the keeper as much chat as you want but keep it within the respect barriers. Racists, Homophobics are not welcome at our club be gone with the lot of them really puts a bad name on all of us fans

@callum_newby: These individuals don’t sum us up as a club! I hope they are found and banned for life, anything less is embarrassing #SayNoToRacism

@Barside87: Legend Shamal! We’re all behind you fella 🔵⚪️

@glenister_andy: We are all behind you! Now they have to go back to their caves in tears! Epic performance once again! Our #1

@callumLtfc: Whole footballing world is with you Sham ❤ lifetime ban for whoever did that @BarrowAFC

@HaywoodAlan: From a Southend united fan. This is totally out of order and needs to stop. Absolutely shocking this is happening in this day and age

@Dickofworm: They’ll never win Shamal. Keep your head held high, you were immense! Up the U’s!

@Seanjames344: So so depressing that this is happening to people doing their jobs in UK in 2021. Solidarity with you young man @shamalgeorge from @officialbantams fan.

@ChrisAd71317281: Yes ignore the racists Shamal, to be fair the fans on the Barrow forum are horrified by what happened, it is just a tiny minority who need to be banned for life. Us Col U fans are right behnd you, we know what a good young keeper you are, keep it up!

@ABrown114: As a Barrow fan I apologise for the disgusting behaviour of what I’m believed to be one individual, I hope the individual is found and dealt with appropriately, please do not believe this is Barrow as a whole as we stand against racism as a fan base and a club

@JTurner_1908: 2021 and this is still happening 🤦‍♂️ how and why? Pathetic. Should just start jailing people and that might make people think twice

@andywebster5: Sad to here, small minority of scum, keep smiling pal 👍
