One particularity Arsenal player deletes his personal Twitter account after receiving abuse from fans following defeat to Man City.
The young Gunners goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson was badly at fault for Manchester City’s second goal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, as he palmed Riyad Mahrez’s freekick into the net as part of Pep Guardiola’s side winning 4-1.
The result puts more pressure on Mikel Arteta with his side now without a win in eight domestic Premier League and cup matches.
Gabriel Jesus handed the visitors the lead on the second minute, heading in from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross. Arsenal then equalised after some great work from Gabriel Martinelli, who found Alexandre Lacazette sending in the ball from the left.
But City then re-took the lead in the second half after Runarsson allowed Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick to get past him, hitting his hands and into the net.
Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte added to the goals tally in a convincing victory for the current Carabao Cup holders, and book their place into the semi-finals as they look to win the competition for the fourth time in a row.
Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted he was disappointed with the manner in which his side allowed City to regain control of the match – in particular Runarsson’s “soft” goal conceded.
“Yeah, a really painful moment again. We started the game conceding really early, a really soft goal and after that in this moment to get through that obviously is difficult.
“But the players reacted to be fair and we started to grow as the game was moving forward. We scored a goal, a really good goal and after that I think we were the better team for the next 25 minutes.
“But when we have the best moment in the game, we conceded another soft goal and that makes the game even harder.
“But still we kept going. We had an open situation we where we can play Laca through. We missed the pass and on that counter, they scored a goal in an offside position and obviously after that moment the game was over.”
Arteta says the club will back the 25-year-old keeper: “It is [a terrible moment for Runarsson] but we win and lose together.
“Alex has played other games. We decided to play him tonight for lots of reasons and that’s it. The responsibility is for all of us.”
After the match, Arsenal supporters noticed that the goalkeeper decided to get rid of his official Twitter account, no doubt because of the criticism from fans.
Runarsson was previously left red-faced after supporters dug up old tweets posted on his account nine years ago as a 16-year-old.
The posts – which have since been deleted – strongly criticised former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, with expletives used.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on last night’s game: “Against this level of opponent, they penalise you and make it very difficult. We have a great counter-attack moment but they then score in an offside position and you end up losing the game again.
“It’s a hard one to take, considering how the game went. This level of opponent, when you give the goals away it makes the game impossible. A lot of strange things are happening in every game and that makes things really difficult.
“We have to turn it around round – there is no question with the fixtures we have it’s going to decide our season. On the basis of what we have shown tonight against difficult opponents, I have fighters in my team. Yes, I have fighters.”
“I’m pretty sure they are going to trust him,” said Guardiola when asked if Arsenal need to stick with Arteta.
“They will do a big mistake if they are thinking [of dismissing him].”
“I know his incredible quality as a human being and especially as a manager, how he is involved in everything,” added the City boss.
“It’s just a question of time and he will do well.
“Football changes in one week so quick. I can speak about my experience alongside him – one of the most incredible, successful teams in English history we had, and he was part of this success.
“It would not be possible without him. To create something like this you need time like I had in my first season.”
Arteta said he and his team were “going to keep fighting”.
Users reacted after seeing that the Arsenal player deletes his Twitter account after receiving abuse from fans…
@P0TTZ84: He needs to deactivate his contract aswell.
@7amkickoff: It’s pretty funny that Runarsson is like so many people on Twitter: happy to take a s*** on Arsenal’s greatest ever manager but if you put them in a game..
@FatolaFabs: Arsenal fans bullied Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson, last night’s GK in the Carabao Cup tie against City off Twitter. As gutted as I was for the defeat, I shook it off immediately and moved on. He was the scapegoat last night, going into his comments to abuse him is just extreme.
@Dan3Thompson: Runarsson deleting his twitter after last night was the best thing he could have done. His goalkeeping coach should be sacked too
@T6_official: So Arsenal fans actually bullied Alex Runarsson because of yesterday’s performance which made him delete his Twitter account. A lot of these fans are psychopaths
@Armor4Sleep: You have to wonder why did Runarsson go straight onto twitter after that performance lol was he expecting encouragement
Jason: A shame that an Arsenal player deletes his Twitter account after receiving abuse from fans but maybe it’s best, Twitter is often a hotbed for fans to attack the player straight away and try and messed then up mentally. If it even worth footballers having social media? Would prevent a lot of issues. Really they use it for sponsorship and advertising right?
we are a terrible fanbase sometimes

Well done everyone 👍 great way to show support to a guy who’s obviously not had the best day at the office.
It’s not his fault Arteta picked him pic.twitter.com/dOC0XSo0Ej— James Howson (@BigJimmy_V) December 23, 2020
It’s not sometimes. Unfortunately it’s always

Hope he deactivated his contract too

Yes he had a bad night at the office but #Rúnarsson deactivating his Twitter account because of treatment by the fans is pathetic…but not shocking. Most toxic fanbase (on the whole) in Europe. Have said so for years. Stop abusing players through anonymity. Pathetic. #AFC

Runarsson deleted his Twitter because of yesterday’s abuse??
That’s just sad.

So sad that Runarsson has felt the need to delete his Twitter. Our fans can be awful sometimes.
