Anthony Gordon impresses fans with an open and honest interview after England beat Ireland 2-0 in the Nations League at the weekend.
Anthony Gordon has captured the attention and admiration of many, not just for his performance on the pitch but also for what he said post-match.
He was pivotal in England’s win, showcasing his pace and threat, and caused significant problems for the Irish defence, his contribution crucial in setting up the fast break that led to Declan Rice’s opening goal.
The sentiment around Gordon’s recent interactions with the media suggests he’s been candid about his ambitions and disappointments.
From a lack of game time at the Euros under Gareth Southgate, the openness about wanting to represent England at major tournaments, and now the style of play, the tactics and freedom with Lee Carsley now in charge.
‘I think that position suits him, it’s where he played at Villa, I thought he was excellent today.’ 🤝

Interviewer Gabriel Clarke: Anthony, well done. You talked about the importance in the week of coming in and wanting to make an impression, having got that chance. How do you think you did?
Gordon: I think I did well. I think I showed my strengths. I thought that was dangerous, especially in the first half. Like I said, when he comes in, I know I can be dangerous and behind and cause teams problems because they’ve sort of got to pick the position in what way they want to defend. We created a lot of chances from it. So I’m still getting me fitness from the summer, so I was after them runs. I was knackered, but, yeah, I thought I done well.
Gabriel: What worked in particular in that first half? Because there was a variety to England’s play.
Gordon: I think freedom, I think not, you know, structured players here and there and everywhere. It’s just like you had Jack going all over the pitch and they couldn’t really pick up, pick up where we were putting ourselves. And me and Bukayo tried to hold the width and the depth and make runs in behind so the lads could get in the ball more.
Gabriel: How important was today, do you think, for Jack Grealish, having missed out on the summer? It was tough for him.
Gordon: I think it’s really important for his confidence. Just in an England shirt again. He’s a top player, I think everyone knows that, but I think that position really suits him where he’s that free spirit. Its where he played at Villa and I thought he was excellent today.
Gabriel: What did you make of the two Irishmen? And they got a little bit of stick, obviously, getting their goals.
Gordon: I think it was destined, weren’t it? I thought they made the game better, though. It was all fun and games. The atmosphere was top and every time they got it, it was getting booed. It was a good atmosphere today.
Gabriel: I think Jack Grealish quite likes that role of pantomime villain, almost.
Gordon: Yeah, he does. He definitely does. We lived up to it and whatever makes him play better, I think he’d take. So, yeah, fair play to him.
Gabriel: You talked about Lee’s style, knowing from the under 21s, dynamic play, the need to be fluid. Did we see elements of that today that maybe we didn’t see in the summer?
Gordon: Definitely. I thought today was a really good. Sorts of positionless football in a sense where people can pick the ball up wherever, intricate passing, but always with the main focus on we’re trying to score goals. So we don’t want everyone come to the ball. That’s sort of my role and and Bakary’s role to stretch them and and cause that danger in behind.
Gabriel: And where’d you place today? For you in an England shirt? Because there was promise going Into the euros frustration there. So is this the highlight so far in an England shirt?
Gordon: Yeah, I would say so. I tried to live in the present, so I don’t talk. I don’t try not to live in the past. Sorry. But now we got another game. I should have scored today, so I’ve still got a lot to work on. I owe Trent one for that pass. I’ll make up for that.

As mentioned, Anthony Gordon impresses fans with his open and honest interview after England beat Ireland…
@SheldonMiller: Gordon speaks so well. Always honest, forthright & thoughtful. Was absolutely baffled as to why he didn’t start at the Euros or at the very least get 30-45 minutes a game. Offers a totally different dynamic: pure pace & direct. Draws defenders like moths to a flame, creating panic for the opposition and space for other England players.
@Firephilo: Never thought this would be the individual he is when first saw him in an Everton shirt. An absolute class act on and off the field and could listen to him being interviewed for hours. Sky’s the limit for Anthony
@IAmLW_88: Played better with him today. We looked so one dimensional at times in the euros (Saka,Saka Saka) and that’s from a Sunderland fan. Well played Gordon lad 😂
@JustInArt903: He’s speaks very maturely and logically, you can tell Eddie Howe has had a big part in that. Hopefully more from him in an England shirt and a first cap for Livramento soon to come 💪🏻🖤🤍🖤
@Jlough85: he’s got such a level head on him now. So happy he’s Gona develop into an exceptional talent here at Newcastle. We’ve got an absolute gem on our hands well done @anthonygordon massive season for him this year #NUFC
@millsytrfc: Good honest interview, not the usual sound bite.
@nitramdragon: AG comes across very well in the interviews I’ve watched.
@FoxyN77: Really like hearing from Gordon, top player and a good lad too, speaks from the heart.
@andre_denn: Gordon not missing ANOTHER Chance to say basically Southgate hadn’t a clue as a manager getting the best out of Fellas..
@J90Pyl: Gordon always interviews really well, none of these robotic media trained answers you get from most players. Can’t believe I used to dislike him so much when he was at Everton 🤣
@WatsonPAW: He’d be a class pundit when he’s finished playing. Speaks well. Also love how many times he has dropped sly digs at Southgate since Carsley took over 🤣
@IanAkki07: TBF he always comes across as a bright lad, always talks sense,,and here he’s just thrown Southgate under a bus, saying exactly what we all said about how England played in the Euros.
@JakeNUFC__: so well spoken, another massive year for him. running down the wing 😍
