Anthony Gordon ‘makes a dig’ at Gareth Southgate after being left disappointed during Euro 2024

Anthony Gordon ‘makes a dig’ at Gareth Southgate after being left disappointed at the lack of game time during Euro 2024.

Gabriel Clarke sat down with interim England manager Lee Carsley and Anthony Gordon, discussing a range of topics, but it’s what Gordon said that has caught everyone’s attention this week.

Anthony reveals he didn’t question Southgate why he weren’t getting selected because that’s not what he does.

But visibly felt disappointed at the lack of game time, considering he had a brilliant season, felt ‘unstoppable’ and when he did come off the bench, he’d be ready to impress. To help guide England to a trophy.

Gabriel: “How do you feel about your Euros? You were fit. You were backed, I think, by an awful lot of people to have been given more time. So when you reflect on one appearance across the tournament, how do you feel?”

Anthony: “I was disappointed Just because in myself, I believe In myself so much, I feel unstoppable, especially at that point with the season I just had, I felt like no one could defend me, no one could deal with me over 90 minutes. I felt like I was just ready to go and really impress people and help the country win the trophy. So to envision what I envisioned to what it was, It was disappointing.”

Gabriel: “What did the manager say to you in terms of why you weren’t selected?”

Anthony: “Nothing, really. I didn’t ever really ask. Like I’ve said plenty of times, I’m not really that that type of guy. I just like to get on with what I’ve got to do. Like I said, I believed in myself. So even from the bench, I was thinking, if he brings me on, I’m going to be ready, I’m going to change the game. But It didn’t happen.”

Gabriel’s interview with Lee Carsley: “How are you viewing this, a chance to help out or the opportunity of a lifetime?

Lee: “Well I think it’s a bit of both if I’m if I’m being honest I think it’s like I said it’s not something that I was heading towards, you know I’m really proud and privileged for the job that I’ve got the under 21s it’s a really good way for me to work with the best players to compete to hopefully play in major tournaments but it’s something that I’m obviously proud of I think it’s you know it’s something that I’m you know I’m relishing.”

Gabriel: “Do you want the job?”

Lee: “I once say I wanted it I think it’s a job that I’m enjoying doing so far we obviously haven’t played any games yet so but yeah I’m proud in the position that I’m in I think the the fact that I’m you know there’s no promises I’ve got three camps and I think we’re in a good position.”

Gabriel to Anthony Gordon: “When Lee Carley got the call what was your reaction?”

Anthony Gordon: “I was absolutely delighted, lovely, as a guy first and foremost, but I think as a coach he’s more than deserving of his place of course we won the Under 21 Euros so I think with the manager leaving I think he was just the best the best person for the job.”

Gabriel to Lee Carsley: “So if you do well next few weeks months it’s in your hands to get the job?”

Lee: “Not necessarily no I think it’s important that they get the best person for the job I think there’s this is a a fantastic job you know one of the best jobs in the world being in charge of English football with the talent that we’ve got available you know the best person the best coach head coach should get the job.”

Gabriel: “Can that best person be you?”

Lee: “Well I’m not sure, I’m not sure I think the the objectives are are plain and simple Gareth and Steve done so well got so close the next next coach comes in knows exactly what the what the landscape is we need to win a major tournament and keep progressing and build on what we’ve done in the past?

Gabriel to Anthony Gordon: “Has Lee Carsley got what it takes to be England manager?”

Anthony: “Without a doubt”

Gabriel: “Do you think he believes that?”

Anthony: “I think he believe that deep down I think if you asked him he’d probably say no just because he’s that type of guy he’s very humble he’s very laidback but his humility is a great thing and I think that’ll surprise a few people because he definitely is capable and he will sneak up on a lot of people.”

Twitter users reacted as Anthony Gordon ‘makes a dig’ at Gareth Southgate after being left disappointed during Euro 2024…

@Hickeyd29Hickey: That will always be one of the biggest mistakes for that tournament man. Not allowing this man to run defences ragged on that left hand side, after the season had was borderline criminal. Not only that but for him to only get on once is so mental man.

@ToonMouthTyne: 25+ goals and assists in 23/24. Unforgivable.

@madashington: Jesus christ, not even to be communicated with. That’s shocking.

@ToonMouthTyne: Absolutely unforgivable. It’s clearly had a massive impact on his confidence

@PaulJSpacey: Gordon and Palmer didnā€™t start a game. Two of our most dangerous attacking talents. That alone was enough to sack Southgate. To be honest, it should be jail time.

@RichardGibson05: Playing Foden on the left instead of him is exactly the reason he shouldnā€™t have been England manager

@HarveyRobson0: The one and only reason he hasnā€™t looked as amazing at the start of this seasonā€¦ confidence

@AfcInverted: Southgate was bullied into shoehorning Foden into the team at the expense of proper team balance.

@shanefagan: Weird behaviour really, like ok not playing him is a choice a manager can make but literally not speaking to him about is really cold to do to someone.

@OddAlerts: Donā€™t worry, Carsley knows all about Gordon. He wonā€™t be wasted anymore.

@Music_Hoppy: Regardless of if you agree if he should have played more or not. It is shocking that Southgate didn’t even have a conversation with him to explain his decision.

@MadGeordie3: Not even being biased but actually feel he would of made the difference. England spent the whole tournament with no presence on the left wing it was embarrassing. Felt against Spain he would of made something happen. Wasnā€™t to be having inept manager in Southgate

@DavidLi65476220: And yet people are fooled by his record and think Southgate is one of England’s all time great managers….. the guy was handbrake…. so safe. Guarantee with the players available Carsley will do better than Southgate

@JaydenTerror: What a big waste that was, we was crying out for a proper left winger and Gareth just left him sat there.

@Sandance1888: It was absolutely baffling why Southgate didnā€™t play him. We lacked pace and width on the left. Gordon offered both and was ignored. The team Southgate picked was so unbalanced. I think Southgate was too scared to drop the big names. Like when Sven played Scholes left wing.

@JustInArt903: It was an absolute waste of his talent. Gordon would have given England’s LW another dimension of intense pace, directness and would have pegged opponents back more. It beggars belief he did’t get more than 5 minutes when he was exactly what England needed on the left.

@paulhtfp: It was hubristic of GS not to play him when we were crying out for a genuine left-winger. GS just didn’t want to admit he’d been wrong to play Foden there. All England managers find pointless hills to die on eventually and GS was no exception.

@Geordie_85: Southgate was a clown. Gordon has blistering pace and gets past players, esp in 1v1 situations, look at Spain with Williams and Yamal. Southgate didnā€™t use him at all
