Angry Roy Hodgson rants after Liverpool defeat saying he won’t miss football when he retires

An angry Roy Hodgson rants after Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, saying he won’t miss football when he retires.

Harvey Elliott’s fine strike secured a controversial three points for Liverpool after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty saw Crystal Palace take lead and Mo Salah equalised shortly after Jordan Ayew was sent off.

This was a decision that had Hodgson fuming, while Crystal Palace also had a first-half penalty ruled out by VAR.

Speaking after the game, Roy Hodgson said of Ayew’s sending off: “[Virgil] Van Dijk took the opportunity to get him the first yellow card, which was very disappointing. The second one I thought was a good challenge, even if it was deemed a foul, it wasn’t a yellow.

“I’ve been in football a long time, games like today make me realise when I come to leave it behind, I won’t be missing it. I’ve never had any doubts about the players, we are going through a bad spell but I’ve had no worries about the rest of the season. I’ve got no doubts in my mind, they will keep this side in the Premier League. [Getting top ten] That’ll be difficult.”

He continued: “We have to reinforce in the centre of midfield. We don’t have an awful lot of options there. I should be standing here happy with a 1-1, but I’ve got to accept that the performance has been turned into a 1-2.

“Refereeing and the ref’s incentives. I’m sick of the handball’s interpretations, I’m sick of time-wasting and player behaviour. [On VAR] I’m not a great lover of it, it’s less bothering than handball decisions. What I really don’t understand is we’ve got a referee, who made his presence felt, he gives a clear penalty then decides to change and then no penalty for the second and decides to change it. Who is refereeing the game? I’m in a bad mood.”

Ferdinand and Crouch agreed post-match.

“Sometimes you’ve got to factor in that this person is on a yellow card [before booking them again],” Ferdinand said.

“There’s no animosity within the tackle. I know it was a tactical foul. But I don’t believe that was a yellow card at all.”

Crouch added: “If Joe Gomez was in, then potentially. But there was cover around and he wasn’t going through on goal. I think it was a little bit harsh.

“You could tell in the stadium, no player or fans reacted. It felt like the referee made the decision on his own.”

Player ratings (as per Sky Sports)

Crystal Palace: Johnstone (6), Ward (7), Guehi (7), Andersen (7), Clyne (7), Richards (7), Lerma (7), Hughes (7), Schlupp (6), Ayew (7), Edouard (6).

Subs: Mateta (7), Olise (6), Ahamada (6), Matthews (n/a), Ozoh (n/a).

Liverpool: Alisson (7), Alexander-Arnold (6), Quansah (6), Van Dijk (7), Tsimikas (6), Szoboszlai (6), Endo (6), Gravenberch (6), Salah (7), Nunez (5), Diaz (5).

Subs: Gomez (7), Konate (6), Gakpo (6), Elliott (7), Jones (7).

Player of the Match: Harvey Elliott.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to TNT Sports: “Seventy-six minutes really bad game from us. We came here and I think you could see in the beginning Crystal Palace were insecure, really low confidence levels, and I think we could have done so many things and didn’t.

“We know that happens from time to time and intense weeks, first half is sometimes a bit tricky. Obviously we wanted to do better in the second half, I felt we were a bit more in control because they only had counter attacks. That’s fine of course for them but we lost the ball for a moment and had to defend with a lot of effort.

“They get the red card and we score immediately, the equaliser. From that moment on we played really well. You can have much more problems against ten men and we saw today, subs can make a massive difference.

“Harvey played a wonderful game and scored a wonderful goal. Curtis came on and Gomez, oh my god, Cody and I forgot who else we brought on so we changed the system.

“I told the boys that’s the first game I’ve seen somebody play as bad as we did for 76 minutes and still winning.

“In this period of the year, I said it after Sheffield United, we have to get through this, we need results. Nobody is in for the Oscar award, best football game ever, it’s about three points we got them and we are more than happy.”

This is how fans reacted after an angry Roy Hodgson rants following defeat to Liverpool, saying he won’t miss football when he retires…

@BarryOsully: It was a second yellow. He stopped a counter attacker so it’s a booking and it’s always been a booking no idea why they’re all crying about it

@TheEaglesBeak: No matter what Roy has said in recent weeks, his comments today really strike a cord with a lot of people. Complete frustration at what our game has become, and for someone who’s been in the game for a long time to say he won’t miss it is very sad indeed. #CPFC | #PremierLeague

@RobEastley: Well said Roy, says what a lot of football people are thinking 👌👏

@lesroberts77: Love how he calls Van Dijk a cunt without actually calling him a cunt.

@Juppopovic: Been hating Roy all week and then he comes out and speaks brilliantly. The game of top level football has turned to absolute shit in the last few years. (I still want him gone before the end of the season.)

@PED7: Fair play to Roy here, saying exactly what a lot of football fans are feeling atm

@jdmcpfc1990: Disagreed with a few things Roy has done in interviews this season but this one is spot on #cpfc

@osteoben85: In fairness to Roy, I think he’s made some “gaffs” in interviews recently but this one he’s absolutely nailed. Well said Roy 👏🏻

@grantybaz: No mention of flying, reckless tackle on Curtis Jones (pen and red potentially) when Salah scored. They would’ve been down to 10 anyway and 1-1. A bit of fair reflection please?!

@JonoBrady: It certainly is sad to watch games like that – non-stop tactical fouls from his team to stop every single attack & utilise fact he could substitute 5 players on a yellow – until the ref actually copped on to it 👏

@rednbluephil: Roy saying exactly how I feel. It won’t be long before people walk away from this corrupt game.

@UpperGwladysBlu: I absolutely love Hodgson’s honesty here. He doesn’t give a flying one, he’s saying it like he sees it, he’s cheesed off & he unloads, even when they’re trying to get him to say ‘positive’ things. Good for him, one of the most honest post-match interviews you will ever see.

@JosephVenables: Someone needs to let him know that the league has been rigged since the super 7 tried to leave. Keep the big clubs happy means the prem get to keep milking the £bn’s cash cow

@Troomp: Roy on top form. Telling everyone how it was. Brutally honest with a sprinkle of sarcasm

@bally03: You won’t be the only one Roy. The game is too frustrating to watch week after week. Fans have and more will follow to walk away from the game if things done change.

@ZG3II: Don’t think he said a wrong word here. Applaud the whole thing.

@SELDjw: I have been and am critical of Roy but he is absolutely on the nose here about officials and VAR

@EFCLyndon: Hodgson is visibly angry here but retains his dignity when I’m sure he’d have loved to have dropped a few “F” bombs. The state of the English game and the deference to the big clubs is incredibly dispiriting. But “we’ll” shrug our shoulders, move on and nothing will change
